Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 144: What Is She Hinting At?
"Shut up!" Serena Hughes, her face flushed with anger, quickly cut May Rhodes off. "If you don’t know how to talk, then keep your mouth shut!"
’What an idiot. She can’t even say something so simple.’
’Wasn’t she just implying that I’m worse than a dog?’
The receptionist was about to laugh, but seeing Serena berate May Rhodes, her expression soured.
"Who do you think you are, talking to our future boss’s wife like that? If you don’t leave now, believe me, I’ll have security drag you out."
"Drag me out..." May Rhodes peeked at Serena Hughes. Seeing Serena was on the verge of exploding, she quickly grabbed her arm and turned to the receptionist. "I told you, she’s a good friend of mine. I’m taking her upstairs for something important. I’ll take full responsibility. If there’s really a problem, have Assistant Justin Bell contact me."
Hearing this, the receptionist’s expression softened. "All right, you can go on in."
Just then, the receptionist’s gaze shifted to the entrance. She spotted Cecilia Nathan and immediately put on a fawning expression. "Miss Nathan, you’re here!"
’Miss Nathan...’
Serena Hughes looked toward the entrance, and when she saw Cecilia Nathan, her face darkened to the color of soot.
’What’s the meaning of this? Why are they so nice to Cecilia Nathan but treat me like a stray dog? Is her status really higher than mine?’
Serena Hughes was about to make a sarcastic remark but suddenly remembered what her grandmother, Fiona Sinclair, had said.
Her grandmother had said that Cecilia Nathan might be connected to the Nathan Family.
She swallowed the words that were on the tip of her tongue.
"Cecilia Nathan, what are you doing here?"
Serena Hughes plastered a friendly smile on her face.
Cecilia, however, immediately spotted May Rhodes standing beside her.
Today, May Rhodes was dressed in a black leather outfit that, even in winter, couldn’t conceal her stunning figure. The material clung to her perfectly, accentuating the shape of her bust and the curve of her hips, making it impossible to look away.
’I didn’t expect May Rhodes and Serena Hughes to know each other.’
Recalling that Serena Hughes had performed that piece before, Cecilia’s gaze grew cold.
If it were just about the music, Cecilia might have dismissed it as a coincidence. But with May Rhodes now in the picture, too many coincidences were starting to look like anything but.
’Serena Hughes must know about "Luna the caregiver."’
As Cecilia’s heavy gaze scrutinized her, Serena Hughes felt a chill of fear.
"Cecilia Nathan, why are you looking at me like that?"
Cecilia raised an eyebrow and coldly averted her gaze, not dignifying the question with a response.
’Serena Hughes has been on my blacklist for a long time because of the things she’s done.’
"Take me to President Hawthorne," Cecilia said to the receptionist with a small smile.
The receptionist nodded eagerly and quickly swiped a card to open the security gate. "You’ve come at the perfect time. President Hawthorne has the annual general meeting in half an hour. If you go now, you’ll be able to catch him."
Seeing Cecilia ignore her, Serena could no longer contain the rage bubbling up inside her.
’She hadn’t wanted to lower herself to the receptionist’s level, but who the hell did Cecilia Nathan think she was?’
’So what if she might be one of the Nathans of Aethelgard? That’s just a maybe, isn’t it?’
’What right does she have to act so high and mighty in front of me?!’
If May Rhodes was her foil, then Cecilia Nathan was the one obstacle she could never overcome.
’If Cecilia Nathan hadn’t used that child as a threat back then, my proposal might have actually succeeded.’
’Anyone who could simp for Damian Hawthorne for that long couldn’t possibly be some innocent little flower.’
"Cecilia Nathan! I said hello to you. What’s with the cold shoulder? Do you have no manners at all?"
Serena Hughes’s voice was loud. The first-floor lobby was spacious to begin with, and her shout drew the attention of everyone around.
Everyone at Hawthorne Enterprises knew who Cecilia Nathan was.
She was Damian Hawthorne’s biggest simp.
And Damian Hawthorne was the unattainable man she loved, her "one that got away."
Seeing Serena Hughes and May Rhodes cornering Cecilia Nathan, people quickly sensed that drama was brewing.
"Isn’t that May Rhodes? President Hawthorne’s fiancée."
"And... the one beside her is... Serena Hughes... Oh my god, this is a total showdown between the exes and the current fiancée!"
"I never dreamed I’d get to see a spectacle like this. This is so juicy, so juicy."
...
Seeing Serena’s uncontrollable rage, Cecilia merely frowned faintly and started walking through the gate.
At that moment, Serena Hughes gave May Rhodes a pointed look. May quickly grabbed Cecilia’s arm. "Miss Cecilia Nathan, this is Serena Hughes, the heiress of the Sinclair Family. Considering your own background... this attitude won’t do you any favors. I’d advise you to apologize to her."
’Apologize...’
Cecilia remembered that the Sinclair Family was behind what happened to her friend’s company, and her expression grew several shades colder.
"Miss Cecilia Nathan, surely you don’t want to find yourself unable to make a living in Korsyth, do you?" May Rhodes knew that if Cecilia failed to get the money today, Serena Hughes would put all the blame on her.
The words seemed innocuous, but they were a clear reminder to Cecilia that if she didn’t apologize, she’d be blacklisted not just by the Sinclair Family, but by the Hawthorne Family as well.
"I hear Miss Cecilia Nathan has an instrument shop in the city. Miss Nathan, we may not know each other well, but if you want to make a life in this city, it’s best not to make powerful enemies."
May Rhodes puffed out her chest, her tone sanctimonious.
Seeing May Rhodes take her side, Serena’s expression finally softened.
’Even though she’d lost face with the Hawthorne Family, at least May Rhodes still had some.’
’This May Rhodes wasn’t a complete idiot, after all. At least she knew which side to be on.’
Cecilia let out a soft laugh, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
Although she didn’t know why Damian Hawthorne was keeping an imposter like May Rhodes around, Cecilia suspected he was just waiting for the right moment to spring his trap.
’Serena Hughes had deceived him, but he probably wouldn’t act rashly out of consideration for the Sinclair Family. May Rhodes, on the other hand, was a different story.’
"Thank you for the reminder, Ms. Rhodes. However, I have a piece of advice for you, too. It doesn’t matter if you have backing or not. But pretending to have backing when you don’t is just shooting yourself in the foot."
Cecilia’s voice was soft, like a gentle breeze, but it sent a chill down May Rhodes’s spine.
Meeting Cecilia’s crystal-clear gaze, May Rhodes’s heart skipped a beat in panic. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
"Cecilia Nathan, have you lost your mind?" Serena screeched. "May Rhodes is the future First Lady of the Hawthorne Group! Even with Hugo Grant backing you, if you get yourself into serious trouble, no one will dare bail you out!"
The surrounding crowd nodded in agreement with Serena’s words.
They all agreed with her.
Cecilia Nathan and Damian Hawthorne may have had a history, but May Rhodes was the Hawthorne Family’s officially acknowledged Mrs. Hawthorne.
Saying something like that would do Cecilia no good; it would only make her more enemies.
"Thank you for your concern, Miss Hughes. But perhaps you should worry about yourself first. After all, from what I know of Damian Hawthorne, you deceived him. Even if you are the heiress of the Sinclair Family, I doubt he’ll just let you off the hook."
With that, Cecilia turned and walked through the gate.
Serena was about to charge after her but was stopped by May.
"Miss Hughes, wait," May said, holding her back. "Don’t you think... what Cecilia just said... it feels like she was hinting at something."
Having struggled to get by in a small city for years, May Rhodes had developed sharp instincts. She immediately sensed the hidden meaning behind Cecilia’s words.
