Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 130: May Rhodes
Night fell.
The lights of Korsyth gradually flickered on. The lights from countless homes and winding streetlamps formed a brilliant cityscape.
Cecilia Nathan had just found a caregiver for Finn Hawthorne’s sister when she remembered that Damian Hawthorne hadn’t eaten dinner yet.
As she reached the door, Cecilia heard the sound of cheerful chatter and laughter coming from inside the hospital room.
Cecilia’s hand froze on the doorknob.
Just then, the door was suddenly pulled open, revealing a woman with a gentle face.
The woman’s skin was fair, like winter snow, and her beautiful eyes were so bright and dazzling they seemed to speak.
"Who is it?"
Damian Hawthorne’s nonchalant voice drifted out.
Cecilia’s eye twitched.
’It’s only been half a day,’ Cecilia thought. ’How does Damian already have another woman here?’
"Hello, you must be Cecilia Nathan, right?" The woman extended a hand toward Cecilia, her tone gentle and polite. "It’s nice to meet you. My name is May Rhodes. You can call me Luna."
"Come in and talk. What are you doing standing in the doorway?" Damian’s gaze was light and airy, betraying no emotion.
When she saw the empty meal container inside the room, the hand Cecilia was using to carry her own container froze.
"Oh, you brought food," Damian said, glancing sideways at what she was holding. A corner of his mouth lifted. "Luna just fed me."
After speaking, he stared intently at May Rhodes. "Stay with me tonight. My eyes still haven’t recovered."
Though his tone was consultative, it carried a hint of intimacy and petulance.
May Rhodes smiled and nodded. "Okay."
After that, May turned to Cecilia and said softly, "I heard you were going to be taking care of Damian. I used to be his caregiver, so I know how to look after him. You won’t need to trouble yourself anymore, Miss Cecilia Nathan."
Cecilia suddenly recalled the caregiver Damian had mentioned before.
In terms of appearance, this May Rhodes’s eyes and aura were indeed a bit similar to her own. Even their fashion sense was quite alike.
But Cecilia hadn’t expected Damian to find a new woman in just half a day.
"Damian Hawthorne, I said I would take care of you. Are you sure you want her to do it instead of me?"
Cecilia couldn’t quite name the feeling, but her voice was hoarse, as if something was caught in her throat.
First, it was Serena Hughes, and now a May Rhodes had appeared so quickly.
Damian’s luck with women was even better than she had imagined.
"I don’t need you to take care of me. Don’t you have Miles Sinclair to look after? With Luna here, I don’t need anyone else." Damian’s eyes never left May Rhodes, as if he were gazing at a long-lost treasure he had just recovered.
Cecilia looked at May Rhodes, a knot of frustration tightening in her chest.
"Ms. Rhodes, where are you from? I don’t believe I’ve seen you before."
"I was studying advanced nursing abroad and just graduated with my master’s. It’s perfectly normal that you haven’t seen me before." May Rhodes sat by Damian’s bed, her eyes bright and her voice soft. "Damian and I have known each other for a very long time. I’ve been overseas, and if Assistant Justin Bell hadn’t found me, I wouldn’t have even known Damian’s eyes had healed. From now on, I’m going to stay by Damian’s side and never leave him again."
She spoke with such gravity that a flush of anger rushed to Cecilia’s head.
’A master’s in nursing from abroad, huh?’
Looking at May Rhodes, Cecilia took a deep breath and said to Damian, "You said before that you made a mistake with Serena Hughes. Have you ever considered that you might have made a mistake with this one, too?"
"I haven’t," Damian interrupted, narrowing his eyes. "You don’t have to feel like you need to get revenge just because I said that thing about Miles Sinclair was fake. I went through so much to find Luna again. I’m not letting her go this time." 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
Hearing this, Cecilia’s breath caught in her throat.
"Fine, fine, fine. You won’t let go... All right. Then you two hold hands and be happy. I wish you all the best."
Cecilia turned to leave, but May Rhodes grabbed her. "Miss Nathan..."
"Let go," Cecilia said, glaring daggers at the woman before her.
May squeezed tighter, the corners of her lips lifting slightly. "Miss Cecilia Nathan, what is there to be angry about? You’ve found your love, and I’ve found mine. We should be wishing each other well."
Wishing each other well...
Cecilia gave a cold smirk. "Sorry, but I can’t accept your well-wishes."
"Cecilia!" Damian’s voice was low and raspy. "Luna hasn’t done anything to wrong you. What you’re saying is just too harsh."
"Harsh, is it?" Cecilia leaned closer to May Rhodes, her eyes narrowing. "If my words are harsh, it must be because certain people have ulterior motives."
May Rhodes took a few small steps back and said softly, "Miss Cecilia Nathan, I have no grievance with you. There’s no need for you to be so hostile toward me. I know you like Damian and that you chased him for years without success, but you’ve found your own love now. We should learn to respect each other."
Every word out of May’s mouth painted Cecilia as being unreasonable and throwing a tantrum.
Cecilia gritted her teeth and said to Damian, "I wish you two the best."
With that, she walked away without a backward glance.
Just as she reached the doorway, her phone rang. It was the hospital where Finn Hawthorne’s sister was staying.
"Miss Nathan, you need to come quickly. There’s a problem here at the hospital."
The hospital where Finn’s sister was staying was the same one, just in the emergency building on the other side of the campus.
When Cecilia arrived, she saw a middle-aged man causing a scene at the door of the hospital room.
"My daughter, oh, my daughter! Who did this to you? Tell me, and I’ll make them pay with their life!"
The man was wearing a simple black cotton-padded jacket, and his hair and face were a bit grimy.
When the man saw Cecilia, his eyes lit up. "You’re..."
"This is the young lady who brought your daughter to the hospital," the caregiver said, looking at Cecilia as if she were a savior.
Who would have thought that upon hearing this, the middle-aged man’s expression would change completely? "It was you! Our home ending up like that, my daughter getting sick and ending up in the hospital—it’s all ’thanks’ to you!"
Hearing this, Cecilia understood what he was getting at.
He was trying to scam her.
Finn Hawthorne’s sister was awake now. Cecilia walked straight to her side and asked, "Little sister, was I the one who made your home end up like that?"
Finn’s sister lowered her head and mumbled softly, "I... I don’t know..."
Hearing this, Cecilia’s heart filled with disappointment.
In Aethelgard, the Nathan Family had extensive medical connections. In fact, since Finn Hawthorne’s sister had leukemia, Cecilia had originally planned to use her own resources to get her treated.
But she never expected that the girl and her father would turn around and blame her instead.
"Don’t think I’ll thank you just because you brought my daughter to the hospital! If you didn’t do it, why would you bring her here? It’s because you have a guilty conscience!" the man shouted, pointing at Cecilia from the doorway.
People coming and going in the hallway all turned to cast strange looks at Cecilia.
"So what do you want?" Cecilia asked, staring directly at the middle-aged man.
"My daughter is sick and in the hospital all because of you. I won’t ask for much. Give me a hundred thousand, and we’ll call it even."
A hundred thousand.
Cecilia scoffed.
Treating Finn’s sister’s illness would cost at least eight hundred thousand. He was only asking for a hundred thousand. She wasn’t sure if she was getting a deal or getting ripped off.
