Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 104: Sharon Quincy’s Purpose
Cecilia knew Linden wanted to ask Sharon about the "kidnapping" face-to-face.
Cecilia’s lips curled into a smile. "Of course I’m going. After all, she’s my savior. It’s only right that I thank her properly."
Linden nodded and walked into the room first.
Cecilia glanced down at her phone. Just a moment ago, Finn Hawthorne’s sister had replied: Cecilia, you don’t need to come over. My brother’s all better now.
’All better?’
’He got better that quickly?’
Cecilia gave a cold smile and typed back, "Don’t be so formal. I’m coming to see your brother right now."
Without waiting for a reply, Cecilia slipped her phone into her pocket and walked toward Sharon’s room.
Sharon lay on the bed, wrapped in bandages. It was unclear if she knew the extent of her injuries, but tears streamed endlessly down her face.
"Godfather, am I going to be disabled from now on?"
"Don’t worry. Medical technology is very advanced these days. I’ll make sure the hospital gives you the very best of everything. You’ll be fine." Linden didn’t directly answer Sharon’s question.
The doctor had said her hand would be affected in the future, but hadn’t specified how.
"I know you care about me, Godfather. You always give me the best of everything. It doesn’t matter what happens to me. As long as Miss Nathan is okay, I don’t mind sacrificing my own life. She is the young miss, after all. You’ve done so much for me; I’d risk everything to protect you and her." Sharon’s vision blurred with tears that dripped down her cheeks, her voice choked with anguish. "Godfather, there might still be some misunderstandings between Miss Nathan and me... Sharon hopes you can put in a good word for me, so she’ll stop misunderstanding me..."
"What misunderstandings? Let’s just lay it all out on the table."
Cecilia walked into the room, cutting Sharon off.
Sharon’s face grew even paler. She bit her lower lip, putting on a brave face as if preparing for the worst.
Cecilia slowly walked to stand before Sharon, looking down at her. "I only want to ask you one thing, Miss Quincy. I hope you can clear it up for me."
"Alright... COUGH, COUGH... Go ahead and ask." Sharon tugged at the corners of her mouth, forcing a pained smile.
"Miss Quincy, did you know who I was from the very beginning?" Cecilia asked.
"No. I wasn’t sure at first. I only confirmed it later on." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
"So, you kidnapped me just to find out my identity, Miss Quincy?" Cecilia raised an eyebrow, a knowing glint in her smile.
Sharon’s chin twitched. "Yes. I kidnapped you, but not to harm you. We live in a society with laws. How could I possibly use Godfather’s men to kidnap someone? He’s my benefactor; he funded my education all the way through college. I wouldn’t throw my future away. I arranged the kidnapping only to confirm your identity."
As Sharon finished speaking, the tension on Linden’s face visibly eased, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his heart.
"That makes sense. Cecilia’s identity has always been kept confidential. Even if you went to the banquet as Selina Nathan, Cecilia might not have believed you."
"Yes." Sharon was overcome with emotion. "You understand me best, Godfather. You know I would never commit a crime."
Cecilia’s lips curled into a sneer. "Then what about ordering Finn Hawthorne to ruin me?"
Sharon’s expression froze.
"Was that part of your ’investigation’ too? Even if you suspected I was Cecilia, you should never have resorted to such a disgusting tactic. I was using Selina’s identity, and I was almost harmed. What if I hadn’t been? What if I were just some ordinary girl? Wouldn’t her innocence have been ruined?"
Luckily, Finn Hawthorne knew her. And luckily, she was Selina Nathan.
’If not, who would the innocent victim have been then?’
She didn’t believe a single word of Sharon’s explanation.
Because none of it held water.
’When it came down to it, Sharon was just too malicious.’
’Someone so malicious absolutely cannot be allowed to remain in the Nathan family.’
"About Finn... I’m sorry." Sharon avoided Cecilia’s scrutinizing gaze. "I admit my methods were a bit extreme, but I really did it because I was so desperate to find out who you were."
"Then what about you and Damian Hawthorne?" ’Posing as Selina Nathan to discuss marriage with the Hawthorne family... that part makes no sense no matter how you look at it.’
"Miss Nathan, the truth is, I don’t like Damian Hawthorne. We’ve never even met, how could I possibly marry him? This was all just a way to test where your heart lies." Sharon’s eyes were red and swollen as she looked pitifully toward Linden. "President Nathan has missed you terribly. I’d do anything to help him see you again. It was all worth it."
Hearing this, Linden was visibly moved.
"Cecilia, I know Sharon. She’s not that kind of person. All these years you’ve been away, Sharon always said she was fulfilling your filial duties in your place..." Linden paused. "Her methods might have been a little extreme, but she’s not wrong. Because of what she did, I was finally able to see you."
"Cecilia, if Sharon hadn’t created this opportunity, who knows when I would have gotten to see you again."
At this, Linden let out a soft sigh.
Ever since that man, Hugo, passed away, Cecilia had refused to see him.
He admitted he had something to do with the man’s death, but it hadn’t been intentional.
"Cecilia, you’ve refused to see me for years, all because of an outsider. It hasn’t been easy for me, either." As he spoke, Linden’s eyes grew dim. "If it weren’t for Sharon, who knows when I would have seen you. In a way, both of us should be thanking her. If it weren’t for her, you wouldn’t have come to see me so soon, would you?"
Hearing this, Cecilia stopped arguing.
’He wasn’t wrong.’
’If it hadn’t been for Sharon, she wouldn’t have even thought about seeing Linden.’
’In her heart of hearts, she had stopped blaming Linden long ago.’
’Although Linden had been involved in Hugo’s death, he wasn’t the root cause.’
’If she were to assign blame, she was also responsible for Hugo’s death.’
’She just hadn’t been able to face it all these years. She had blamed Linden, but she had also blamed herself.’
"Even so, that doesn’t make her a good person." Cecilia would not forget everything Sharon had done these past few days.
"Dad, do you know what else she’s done?" Cecilia shot a cold glance at Sharon. "She sent someone to steal my phone so I couldn’t contact you."
"Nothing she’s done suggests she knew I was Selina Nathan. In fact, it’s more like she was hoping I wasn’t." As she spoke, she stared intently at Sharon. "I even suspect she staged this entire car crash herself."
"Miss Nathan!" Sharon cut her off, crying out her accusation. "I never thought you would say such heartless things! Look at the state I’m in! How can you say that with a clear conscience? If I hadn’t been protecting you, you’d be the one lying in this hospital bed, not me!"
"You heard what the doctor said! I’m going to be disabled! I won’t be able to lift a thing. My whole life is ruined! I’m a living, breathing person—why would I possibly need to take such a risk and do that to myself?"
Every word from Sharon was an accusation, and with tears streaming down her face, she looked indescribably pitiful.
Just as Cecilia was about to retort, Linden calmly cut in. "That’s enough. This is a hospital room. If you have something to discuss, take it outside."
Cecilia’s brow furrowed. She looked at her father, recalled what the bodyguard had said, and took a deep breath.
’Sometimes, the people involved can’t see the full picture. Cecilia felt her father, being caught in the middle of this drama, was already blinded to the truth.’
She said to Linden, "Father, please step outside for a moment. I have something I want to say to her alone."
Linden rubbed the bridge of his nose, looking weary. "Cecilia, maybe tomorrow..."
At that, Sharon wiped away her tears, closed her eyes, and said, "I’m tired. I want to rest now."
She looked completely resigned.
Seeing her act this way, another flash of pity crossed Linden’s eyes.
