Chapter 27: Broken Arm?

The round explosive shattered upon impact with the ground—shattering and letting out its destructive powers.

BOOM!

From the large crater, a cloud of smoke was emitted, as well as the dust and dirt sent up into the air by it.

The Second Prince looked down curiously at the dark veil that hid away Lillian—his head tilted to the side, perplexed.

"In a regular situation, that may have been a good idea. But against a volley, I can't say I agree with this decision..."

With a swipe of his hand, a storm of bright swords—shimmering in the dark, eerie forest—rained down upon Lillian's rough location.

Like a hailstorm of arrows, they sharply cut through the air, sinking through the smoke.

The Second Prince then yanked back his sword from the tree and nimbly climbed back down using the numerous large branches as platforms.

Approaching Millis's side, he waited for the smoke and dust to clear finally.

"Did you hear anything?"

"Hm? Nah... how much ya betting that she escaped?"

"... Hm... nothing... I highly doubt she didn't escape using that grenade as a smokescreen."

"Oh~? And yet we're not making any efforts to chase after her?"

"Not like it'll matter... we're second in ranking—having already passed."

"Ya don't wanna to get first place?"

The Second Prince held his chin with a thoughtful expression—briefly thinking about it before shaking his head.

"The Lady of Roses's reputation is clouded in a cloud of dark rumours. Although I had yet to meet her myself personally, I'd still rather not unless need to."

"... So you're a wuss then...?"

"... No."

"Oh, come on! Ya definitely are!" Millis teased the tired Prince, who rolled his eyes at her.

"Is there a reason to chase her down? I find it very time-consuming."

"Exactly! What better way to wait out time than by doing something productive?"

Millis's reasoning was somehow capable of making the Second Prince's eyes glimmer with realisation. He gave a few small nods.

"I see... you do make a good point. I believe we should begin tracking her down then."

He shifted their focus back to the dark veil. Seeing that it had cleared—displaying a graveyard of swords born from light with no White-haired girl in sight—they took off.

"Huff... huff... huff... Curse this tiresome body!"

Lillian leaned her arm against the side of the tree, breathing heavily as her chest rose and fell. After exiting out from the cloud of smoke and dust, she made a break for it behind the trees. Luckily, she had managed to get away scot-free. (18)

"They're definitely tracking me down..."

She wasn't sure, but most people who are impulsive would normally think of doing this, and she didn't doubt that Millis would be able to convince the Second Prince of it.

She had, after all, convinced him to join her as a duo.

While she was running, she discovered multiple scratch marks of varying sizes along the trees. All in similar sizes. Especially the one she was currently leaning on.

Three long, jagged scars that were about 2 metres or so wide and 20 or so metres long. It was like so apex predators were marking his territory.

She wasn't able to linger on it for long, however, for Millis's boisterous voice boomed in the far distance.

"Lillian~! Where are ya, darling~!"

Following that was the Second Prince's—scolding her.

"Must you inform everything around us of our location?"

"Huuuh? Is that going to be a problem?" Her eyes narrowed on the Prince. His eyes furrowed—narrowing back at her. They were like two kids stuck in an intense staring contest.

Before long, Lillian had already run away once more. The direction she was running? Well...

The blinking blue triangle off into the distance seemed like the light of a lighthouse in her time of need—like it was calling out to her. She knew she wasn't going to win in a head-to-head battle with someone like the Prince.

So that's why...

She was going to make it so the two strongest people she knew in this exam would engage in a battle to the death. How was she going to do it? All she had to hope was that Marionette was still looking for ways to be entertained.

After that, she would then try to bring Millis away and take her out. However, that's going to be easier said than done.

For a while, she was a 1st Tier mage; Millis was not. She should be around the 2nd at this point in the story.

At each tier, an individual may either gain one of the two randomly. A new element or a trait.

While an element may prove more useful in battle, the potential of a trait is, without a doubt, a game-changer.

Have one that boosts your attack by a percentage, for example. Having something like that as a passive is definitely something she would like to have.

"But right now... I should just focus on reaching her. She's so clos—"

"What exactly is close?"

Lillian snapped her head towards the sudden voice before feeling something slam into her back like a truck —rocketing her forward at break-neck speed.

Her body ragdolled through the air until...

CRASH!

"ARGH...! Kuh-huah...!"

She crashed into a tree. Luckily, it had only just been her arm that took the most damage.

She clutched it tightly, her face writhing in pain as she felt her small rivers of tears leaving the corners of her eyes. (18)

Her arm was broken. Her spine might also be cracked as well...

She let out a shaky, pain-filled sigh. (2)

A shadow soon loomed over her eerily.

Looking up, she saw the Second Prince wielding a large hammer made of light.

That must've been what he used to attack her with.

The hammer soon had webs of cracks spread throughout it like glass before shattering and revealing the polished steel blade of a sword.

"So... I guess this did use up some time..." He said while raising his sword.

"I'm not trying to sound rude, but... I expected quite a bit from you, weirdly..." He then sighed, "Shouldn't have expected it from such a silly family."

And without a second thought, he slashed his sword down upon Lillian.

She widened her eyes—her life briefly flashing before her eyes. Was she going to die already? This was her first day back from the dead! (2)

She gritted her teeth and tightly clutched her sword—her eyes filled with dread. (2)

Just when she had thought it was all over...

SWISH! PSHT!

Something shot through the air at a blurring speed in Lillian's widened eyes. The Second Prince hurriedly dodged to the side, distancing himself from the injured Lillian.

The two then watched as this unidentified swift object pinned itself into the tree—shaking it slightly.

Lillian gazed at it. It seemed to be some kind of long shadowy javelin with a simplistic design.

Shrouded in the darkness that seemed to encroach on those in proximity to it—giving it an almost ominous and sinister feel to it.

They both then turned towards a woman standing at 5ft11, steadily approaching them.

Her body was stained with blood belonging to what may be an insect... or a human's...

Her long black hair stretched down all the way to the lower back like black curtains made with the finest silk.

Her dark red glistening eyes stared at them, unconcerned.

It was Marionette.
