Chapter 174: Chapter 174: Desert Monsters Wave

"My lady!"

I blink for a second as the door to our home opens up, and I can see Nathalia run toward Hilda.

"Nathalia? What are you doing here?"

Hilda looks at the captain of the Grand Explorer with a curious gaze.

"I heard about the situation in this city, and I decided to take some of my soldiers to help you guys."

Hilda releases a sigh, but her smile is still on her face. She looks at Nathalia and says.

"I see. However, can you ensure that you do not tell people my real status?"

"Of course, my lady! Lord Sarhakan already told me about the situation. I will only use your title when we are alone."

"Good. Come inside the kitchen. Also, tell the others to come as well. We will start cooking some food; eating together is more fun than eating alone. The more the merrier."

"Ummm... Are you sure, my lady? Doesn’t it get some unwanted attention?"

"Don’t worry, Gwyn will take care of it."

Hilda gives me a sweet smile, and I can only smile at her and then nod.

"Sure. I can make a barrier around the house."

"Thank you, dear!"

"It is not a problem. Anyway, invite the others. I will be the one cooking."

Nathalia thanks me and quickly leaves the house to invite the other soldiers.

"My lord! The Void Crack! The Void Crack has already reached its maximum size! The magician and the researcher say that the monsters will appear in a few hours! Four hours at maximum!"

The scout team kneels in front of us with sweat running down his forehead. Duke Itor frowns at that news and says.

"Good work! Quickly take the magicians away from the frontline. Rest for an hour before joining the others."

"Yes, my lord!"

The scout team quickly gets up and rides their horse to return to the magicians and researchers watching the Void Crack. Duke Itor then looks at the soldiers and the adventurer on the wall before saying.

"The monster wave will soon arrive in Belltown City! O Defender of Belltown! Lent me your strength! Let’s banish those monsters back to the hell they are coming from! Let us kill them all so we can get back to our family! So we can enjoy our life!"

I smile a little as I hear the people cheer. Duke Itor nods and says.

"Prepare the trap! We will put them together now! We will greet those monsters with explosions and dead traps! Let’s win this fight!"

After saying that, the people start to move. A group of people get down the wall and prepare to spread the trap around the city. There is already a moat around the city, but now it will be filled with spikes and other things to kill the monsters that get inside the moat.

The people also plant the spike inside the sand to pierce the monster that is stupid enough to run to it. Not only that, there are also a lot of magical landmines spread across the battlefield. We make sure to have a red light above it so we know the location of the landmine.

There is also a long wire that is sharp enough to cut boulders. Four sharp wires are put around the city, and seven are put around the Void Cracks to kill as many monsters as they leave the Void Crack.

Should I put the device to force any monsters that can swim inside the sand to get out around the city? Hmm... Let’s do that. I look at Duke Itor and say.

"Excuse me, Duke Itor."

"Hmmm? What is it, Gwyn?"

"Can I put around a device that will let any monsters that can swim inside the sand come out around the city?"

"You have that kind of magical tool?!"

"I do. So, can we?"

"Of course! That will be great! That kind of device will help us a lot."

I nod and take out thirty of them before giving them to Jonathan and Jullian.

"Can you two plant those devices around the city? Make sure to have a hundred-meter gap between the devices."

"Of course, my lord. Leave it to me."

"Leave it to me, young master! I will plant it around!"

I nod and say.

"Thank you, you two."

After saying that, Jonathan and Jullian quickly get down the wall and put the devices around the city.

"Gwyn, sir! What should we do?!"

I look to the side and see Ander, Quentyn, Jul-Tan, and Reni waiting for my order. They will be under my command alongside another twenty adventurers and one hundred soldiers. We will be dealing with the eastern side of the wall.

"Check the arrows and potions! We need to prepare. Make sure there are enough arrows for this fight. Duke Itor is kind enough to give us two thousand arrows to use. Make sure to place them into the position for easy access."

"Of course, sir!"

I can see him and Reni quickly walk away and ask the other to move the quiver full of arrows to the position. I look at Quentyn and say.

"He is an easily excitable person, huh?"

Quentyn releases a sigh and smiles a little.

"He is. However, he is a reliable person in battle. You can depend on him."

"I know. I have seen him fight. He has a great eye that can see monsters from a distance. Not only that, but he also has a great mind that he uses in battle to create plans on the fly. A few years from now on, he will be a powerful fighter."

"That he is. Anyway, what should we do now? What is our job in this fight?"

I think for a few seconds before saying.

"Quentyn, I need you to be in the Free Fall unit. When the monsters fall to the moat, I need you and the others to jump down the wall with the special rope around your body to kill the monsters that fall to the moat."

"That is easy enough."

"What about me, sir?"

I look at Jul-Tan and say.

"There are two options for you, Jul-Tan. You can stay on the wall and wait for monsters to arrive, or you can join Quentyn. After all, we need someone always to be ready with a shield."

Jul-Tan looks at me for a second and looks at Quentyn for another second before saying.

"I think I will join Quentyn. Someone needs to make sure he is alive."

"Oi! What does that mean?! I’m great at staying alive."

Jul-Tan rolls his eyes and says.

"Right."

I chuckle a little and look at the battlefield. I can feel the foul energy from the distance start to get stronger, and I know that the monster wave will arrive soon.

"Sir! I already moved all the arrows to the position!"

I look to the side and see Ander already back. I nod and say.

"Good job. We will wait for Jonathan and Jullian to get back before I give further orders."

We waited for half an hour before Jonathan and Jullian returned from their duty. I nod and take a deep breath.

"Alright, people!"

I gather the attention of the people around me.

"Archer! You will stay in the tower alongside the magicians! Wait for my command of when to shoot your arrows. The same with the magicians! Listen carefully to my words! Don’t think about anything but attacking the enemy! Leave the healing and protection to me."

I can see hesitation inside their eyes, but they decide to trust me and nod their heads. At least my title as an S-rank party leader is enough to get me enough trust from the others. The people in this place know the importance of healers. That means they know that to be an S-rank party, I, as a healer, need to be powerful enough to carry the other through the dungeon or any other hunts.

"Thank you for trusting me. I will not let you down, and I will make sure all of you survive this fight. I swear it in the name of my name!"

I take a deep breath and look at the rest of the group.

"As for the rest of you! Duke Itor already gave you the jumping devices for you guys to use. If you want to be the one jumping down, please go to the left, and if you want to stay on the wall and protect the other using your shield, go to the right!"

I see the people start to move. It is almost half and half, with the jumping squad having a little bit more members. I nod and say.

"Good! Just like the archers and magicians, you can jump when I tell you to jump! We need teamwork in this battle! I don’t want someone to jump faster than the other because they will get injured more than the other. I don’t want you guys to die for doing a reckless thing. Do you guys understand?!"

"Yes, sir!"

"Good! Go and prepare! We are about to start!"

I look at the distance and take a deep breath. Another war against monsters, huh? I hope there will be not a lot of casualties.
