Mark entered the private room and saw the three others already inside.

"Sit," he said curtly, taking the seat closest to the door.

The rest of them gathered around the round table. The large man took the last swig of his drink, then set the empty bottle down on the floor.

"What do you mean we've got a job from the king himself?" asked the hooded woman with golden eyes. Her tone was laced with excitement—after all, a job from the king meant a hefty reward—but there was also a note of suspicion. A request from the king himself was never simple.

"Just like I said," Mark began, looking at them with a serious gaze. "We've been assigned a task by the king. I met with King Aethor personally, in his throne room."

He paused before continuing. "But I have to be honest with you. This job is odd. I don't know how difficult it will be."

The two women and the man exchanged glances. It was rare to hear Mark express uncertainty. He was always the one who made sure to gather every detail, who took on the complicated groundwork before calling the team together. His thoroughness was part of why their success rate was so high.

But now, with Mark himself unsure, the rest of the group couldn't help but feel uneasy.

The woman who looked like a witch spoke up. "Just tell us what you know."

Mark looked at her for a few seconds, visibly uncertain, then nodded.

"Alright. Basically, an envoy from the Elf Kingdom arrived here. He brought news about an ancient Forest God that's about to awaken."

"I haven't heard anything about that," said the hooded woman—Kaela.

"That's because the Archmage Adrius met with him personally. Took him straight into his tower chamber through a private portal," Mark explained.

Again, the three exchanged glances. If that was true, then the envoy must be someone important. They understood that immediately without needing to say it out loud.

Mark then described everything he knew about the man—powerful, yet oddly relaxed. There was something strange about him, though Mark couldn't quite put his finger on it.

He also mentioned the recent case of the missing criminals. According to Eccar, it might be connected, though even he wasn't certain yet.

Finally, Mark revealed the task: they were to escort Eccar to the Qomore Kingdom. Eccar's true destination was a forest near that kingdom.

"Qomore? I thought we'd be handling it here," said the man, Thorne, frowning.

"No. Eccar came here from the Elf Palace. He knows the Archmage, which is why he requested a teleportation directly to this city. This kingdom is much closer to Qomore than the Elf Palace is," Mark said.

Thorne nodded, understanding.

"Alright. We leave tomorrow. I can't give you any more details because there aren't any. Get yourselves ready."

Mark rose from his seat. He had no time to waste—he needed to prepare his gear as well.

"What about the pay?" Kaela asked with a grin full of meaning.

Mark smiled. "It'll be generous. This is a quest from the king himself after all."

The others chuckled as Mark stepped out of the room and walked out of the tavern.

"Of course," he muttered to himself, "that probably means the danger will be just as high."

He sighed and made his way back home.

Eccar now sat with Adrius and his apprentice Lysander in the Archmage's chamber, the air heavy with thoughts that lingered beyond the walls.

They still talking about the Forest Gods whose existence remained unknown.

Eccar voiced his suspicion that a cult might be trying to awaken them, though there was still too little evidence to confirm the connection.

Adrius shook his head slowly, his brow furrowed in frustration.

"We searched the archives, even the oldest ones. There's nothing. Not a single trace that matches what we've been hearing. If this god exists, it may be older than the records themselves," Adrius said.

"Older than the records..." Eccar echoed, nodding thoughtfully.

"No information means the adventurers joining me will get anxious. That could be a problem."

Lysander glanced at Eccar, hesitant.

"W-What about you?" he asked, the words a little stiff. He was speaking to a Dragonborn, after all—something most only dreamed of. He still felt he should use a title, but Eccar had already told him to just use his name. So he did, though it didn't come easily.

"Me?" Eccar gave a short chuckle. "I'm fine."

There was nothing in this world or the next that truly scared Eccar now—not since the war against the Great Calamity and the Six Pillars of Dominon. But he didn't say that. Boasting about such things only made you look arrogant.

Lysander smiled faintly, sensing the calm confidence behind Eccar's words. It wasn't loud or boastful—it was earned, and reassuring.

"Well then," Eccar said, standing up and stretching slightly. "If there's really no more information, I'll get some sleep."

Adrius gave a single nod. "Of course. I'll let you know if we uncover anything else."

Eccar nodded back and stepped out of the room, the quiet click of the door following him into the dim hallway beyond.

Eccar entered his room, closing the door behind him with a soft click. The room was quiet, dimly lit by the glow of a small crystal lamp on the wall.

He let out a breath and dropped onto the bed, the mattress creaking slightly under his weight.

Laying back, he closed his eyes for a moment, then reached out with his mind, calling to Erend through the thread of telepathy that connected them.

Erend responded almost instantly."Eccar? Is something wrong?"

Eccar chuckled lightly, sensing the tension in his friend's voice.

"No, everything's fine. Nothing to worry about. I just wanted to update you."

He paused for a beat. "Adrius and his apprentice couldn't find anything about the Forest God in the records. Not even a hint."

Erend went quiet for a second before answering

"If even Adrius doesn't know anything—and he's the Archmage—then maybe we need to go straight to the source. Head to the site and find the truth ourselves."

Eccar nodded, even though Erend couldn't see it. "Yeah. That's what I'm planning to do if we come up empty everywhere else."

He could feel Erend's quiet sigh of relief through the link.

"Alright. Keep me updated. And... I'm sorry for making you handle all this while I'm here, spending time with my family."

Eccar laughed, a deep, good-natured sound.

"It's alright. I don't feel troubled at all. In fact, I'm glad. I get to explore more of this world's civilizations—not just the Elves. It's exciting."

"Haha. Alright, then. Stay safe."

With that, the connection faded, the telepathic thread falling silent.

Eccar shifted on the bed, letting the calm settle over him. Within moments, his eyes closed and sleep took him.
