I Received System to Become Dragonborn-Chapter 795: Saying Goodbye
Erend stood before King Gulben, who could now sit upright. But that was all he could manage. He was no longer confined to his bed, weak and in pain from his injuries—now, he sat in a specially crafted chair embedded with runes at the back that constantly supplied him with healing magic. His arms rested motionlessly on the armrests, likely still unusable.
Looking at the king's face, Erend could tell the battle had left more than just physical wounds. His face was pale, the wrinkles more pronounced, and his eyes sunken. Perhaps it was due to the injuries, but it seemed more likely that the pain in his heart was the real cause.
Aerchon had not regained consciousness yet. From the injuries Erend had seen, he figured it made sense that Aerchon hadn't woken up—but that didn't stop the king from worrying. It was clearly weighing heavily on him.
Aurdis, Saeldir, King Fairon, the other advisors, and even the guards were outside the throne room. They were focused on cleanup, repairs, and the funerals. Some were already starting the dissection of Laston's body. So for now, it was just Erend and the king alone in the hall.
"What is it you want to say?" King Gulben asked. His voice still sounded hoarse and weak—the power and authority that usually laced his tone were gone, at least for now.
Erend decided not to waste time and got straight to the point. Even though he was concerned about the king's condition, he knew King Gulben wouldn't want to hear sympathy from him.
"I've received another mission from the Power," Erend said. "I need to go to the human kingdom."
Hearing that, King Gulben looked at him with those tired blue eyes. His expression didn't change.
"Is there another threat rising?" the king asked.
"It seems so, Your Majesty."
A long, heavy sigh escaped from the king, as if just speaking and thinking about it was exhausting.
"I feel like… you've been working too hard, Erend. Are you alright?" King Gulben asked.
Erend blinked, surprised that the king would worry about him. "I—I'm fine, Your Majesty. This is what I have to do."
"Just because it's something you have to do doesn't mean you should keep doing such heavy tasks without rest, right?" the king said, a sad smile forming on his lips. "I'm grateful to you and Eccar for helping our kingdom once again. Do you know why I was so reluctant to accept your help in the beginning?"
Erend didn't answer—he knew it was a rhetorical question. He waited for the king to continue.
"I didn't want to place too much burden on the two of you. I know you're already carrying heavy loads because of your power. One strong, dangerous enemy after another keeps appearing in front of you, and you've had no time to rest. I know how hard that must be."
He had never thought of it that way. He had just been doing what the System commanded him to from the beginning. But yes, he had always felt like he bore a heavy weight because of this power. Too many enemies. Too many wounds. Too much pain.
He didn't feel it physically, thanks to the scales that wrapped around his body—but hearing King Gulben's words, which acknowledged his struggles, made him realize just how much he had been carrying, and how little time he'd had to rest.
But Eccar had it worse. At least Erend still had a family to return to in his own world. Eccar had no one.
"I'm alright, Your Majesty. Thank you for your concern." Erend smiled at the king. "Besides, I'll be returning to my world first—to see my family—before heading to that human kingdom. I came here just to tell you that."
King Gulben smiled too and gave him a nod. "Alright."
"If anything else threatens this kingdom, contact me through telepathy immediately."
With that, Erend turned and left the throne room.
After leaving the throne room, Erend walked down the corridor in silence. The sounds of distant voices and clinking tools echoed faintly through the marble halls—reminders of a palace still recovering.
He let out a long, quiet sigh, one hand brushing through his hair as he muttered to himself.
"I'll let Eccar handle it first… but I can't make him wait too long. Better to finish this task quickly, then go home. I'll let him have more time with my family."
He passed by scattered groups of Elves still working on clearing debris and repairing damaged walls.
Then Erend made his way down a side passage that led deep underground—through a spiral staircase of carved stone and glowing blue lanterns. He knew where they would be. The old vaults beneath the palace had been repurposed into a secluded research chamber, safe from prying eyes and sudden disturbances.
When he reached the chamber, a thick iron door stood slightly ajar. The low hum of Magical energy seeped out from within.
He stepped inside.
The room was dim, lit only by orbs of greenish-blue light floating gently above their heads. At the center of the chamber lay Laston's body, suspended mid-air by a web of glowing runes. His limbs frozen in place, his face eerily calm. The molten black armor had been removed, revealing a twisted fusion of flesh and arcane circuitry beneath.
Aurdis stood close, her eyes glowing faintly as her hands moved in delicate patterns, threads of Magic drifting from her fingers into Laston's body.
King Fairon was beside her, arms crossed and watching in silence. Saeldir sit in a wheelchair a few steps behind, keeping a meticulous record of everything they observed.
They hadn't started cutting into the body yet. Not really. Erend could see it from the way Aurdis's Magic worked—like a surgeon studying a wound without touching it.
"Aurdis," Erend called softly, not wanting to break her concentration.
Her eyes dimmed slightly as she pulled her magic back and turned to him. "Erend. You're here."
"How's it going?" he asked, stepping closer.
"We've only just begun," she replied. "His body… it's like a sealed puzzle. Layers of foreign construct merged with Magic. If we rush it, it might destroy what we're trying to understand."

Erend nodded. "I figured you hadn't started cutting yet."
Saeldir glanced up from his notes. "The binding runes are holding him well for now. But if there's a failsafe inside his body wether it Magical or mechanical, it could trigger during dissection. We need to be careful."
King Fairon added, his voice low and firm, "Every inch of him tells a story of power fused with madness."
Erend looked at Laston's form for a moment, then turned his gaze back to Aurdis. "I came to say goodbye. I'll be returning to my world first before heading to the human kingdom."
Aurdis's expression softened. "I see."
She, king Fairon, and Saeldir already heard the explanation about wha they about to do before. And they know that they can't stop him.
"I'll move fast. And I'll come back if anything happens. You'll contact me through the telepathic link if you need me."
"We will," Saeldir said.
King Fairon nodded as well. "You've done enough for us, Erend. We'll hold things here."
Erend offered them a brief smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. He gave Laston's body one final glance, then turned and stepped out of the room, the door slowly closing behind him with a quiet metallic hiss.
Another world awaited. Another task. But first… he need a moment of peace. A moment to breathe. To remember who he was outside the fight.
