Chapter 77: Chapter 77: The Assessment (2)

"Lady first." Blaze stretches his hand out.

"Haha." June tries to let out a laugh.

"Your power is Precision Aim, correct?" Guy says.

He has a touchpad on his wrist, via this device, he can control the room.

"Yes, sir."

"A very easy to measure power. I’m going to put in some targets. You just need to shoot at as many targets as possible."

Guy types something onto the touchpad. The floor of the room split, and two little cannons rose up from the floor.

A platform near them also rises up, on it is a handgun with three fully loaded magazines.

"Whenever you are ready."

June takes a deep breath in and steps forward. She’s very familiar with handling guns, one look and everyone can tell she is extremely skilled.

She loads the gun in one swift motion and stretches out her arms. June tilts her head slightly and presses her cheek to the shoulder.

"Very good form. Ready... Set... Go!"

Guy clicks on the pad. Targets are immediately shot out from the floor cannon.

The loud noise of gunshots fills the room. The gun screams repeatedly, breathing out fire from its barrel.

June is very professional. She keeps her body in place and moves very slightly. Small, calculated turns of the upper body to point the gun at the right angle.

She doesn’t fire endlessly but makes each shot count and flawless.

Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.

Each shot is precisely apart between the same amount of time, never too long, never too quick.

One seamless barrage of bullets.

And then the gun clicks. June presses slightly on the release.

The magazine drops down while she is reaching for the second magazine. When it hits the floor, the gun is already reloaded, and she continues.

"Wow! She has skills." Alyson says.

Blaze nods.

"129 hits on 150 moving targets."

Guy announces the score in the end.

"For a D-rank power, this is impressive."

June breathes heavily, constricting her body for a precise aim in this environment really takes a toll on her.

"For pure power assessment, yours is the best D-rank there is. But your skill is good, so I’ll mark it as potential C5. Is that alright?"

"Of course. Thank you, sir."

D-rank does not have smaller numerical levels like C-rank and higher. June really impresses Guy.

He puts her power rank as D but her power level as C5. This can help her to have more privilege in society. A kind gesture from him.

"Let me help you to the observatory."

Alyson steps forward and supports the exhausted June.

"You really are strong. I can’t even see a sweat on you." June says.

"My power enhances my physical condition, so nothing impressive really. But you are one hard girl."

"Hehe. Thanks."

The girls enter the observatory, leaving Blaze with Guy.

"You don’t have any record in the system. I heard Nicole say you just awakened as well. Is this true?"

"That’s right."

"It must have been hard for you all these years. What’s your power?"

Blaze is surprised at Guy’s softness. His demeanor is completely different than in Nadyr’s memory.

Well, he was a drill instructor, so it required him to be tough for the job. But Guy always had soft spots. Even back then he was very forgiving to the new recruits, despite his ruthless training regime.

Now that he is no longer in the Legion, he probably no longer needs to keep up this facade.

"I can strengthen my physical attributes in a short time. The extent of the enhancement is... A-rank."

Guy raises an eyebrow.

"Are you sure? People can overestimate their power rank. An A-rank assessment can be very challenging."

"What if I just show you?"

Blaze takes a deep breath in and holds it. A sphere of green aura burst out from within him. Screeching wind blows past Guy’s buzzcut.

"Interesting. From the presence of your energy alone, it is at least B3 or higher.

There’s no more reason for me to doubt. Here comes the A-rank assessment."

The floor splits again. The cannon from before is lowered down, instead a group of robots replaces its position.

These aren’t humanoid robots but miniature tanks with spider legs as their wheels.

"These are Arach-45, the latest version produced by the Institution of Order. It is made out of Thonorite alloy, three times stronger than steel, and can absorb five times as much force.

They will shoot out pellets, which won’t kill you but will leave a mark on your body and temporarily daze you.

Are you sure you want to proceed with this assessment?"

Blaze takes a look at the robots. These are much more advanced than whatever robot Rufus was using.

Their exteriors are covered inside a smooth, gleaming metal with no crevices that expose the internal parts. Its spider legs are extremely agile, moving those heavy cannons on the top with ease.

Each tank has three separate barrels. One is the longest in the front. One is very short, only half an adult length, but can move freely to shoot at any position. The last one is a barrel under its body, stationed in between its legs.

"Is it alright for me if I break them?"

Guy laughs out loud.

"Kid! These are made out of Thonorite. It is not easy to break it. But if you can, do it. The more you break, the higher your power level will be.

The League absorbs all damaging costs."

"That’s all I need to hear."

And Blaze darts forward. He clenches his fist and aims it at a tank.

"Hmm. Poor footwork. Incorrect posture..."

Guy types everything that he sees into the touchpad.

"The kid seems to have had no training prior but has a very good natural sense of combat."

Blaze may not have any experience in martial arts, this causes him to be unable to fight as effectively. But the Zero Mind power helps him to move without flaws.

The spider tanks scatter. Some climb onto the wall, some extend the distance, and the rest form a formation and aim their long barrels at Blaze.

Screeching pellets shoot out from their barrels. They use a special air compressor to fire the pellets, causing each shot to be much quieter than a normal gun.

Its pellets, however, move just as fast as bullets fired from gunpowder-based firearms.

Blaze zips through the floor, avoiding the barrels of the tank.

This speed is more than enough for him to dodge every single projectile firing his way.

Blaze soon closes the distance and approaches the tank formation.

The spider tanks from the wall aim their barrels down and shoot at Blaze, keeping him away from the main formation.

The pellets scream through the air and are only centimeters away from Blaze.

"Unlucky. He should have dodged them sooner. Now there’s no chance of avoiding them."

Guy comments. Blaze’s speed is impressive for sure, but not enough to completely ignore the pellets either.

But then, a golden light materializes into the assessment room.

A sword of gold with a falcon head as its pommel.

"Summoning power?"

Blaze calls forth the Sun Bird and, with one clean strike, deflects all the pellets away from him.
