I Married the President-Chapter 90: Who Do You Think You’re Talking To
After saying that, the man pulled out his phone and started walking away as he answered a call. "Governor Lockwood, rest assured. Everything has been handled perfectly..."
Claire Sinclair was left standing there, a baffled expression on her face.
’Who was that man?’
She looked down at the place cards in her hand. She recognized a few of the names—they were all influential figures in the cabinet. The only one missing was the incumbent president, Arthur Lockwood, who was about to retire.
’With so many cabinet members attending, is there something else on the agenda besides receiving President Helmanro?’
Claire Sinclair was puzzled, but she didn’t dare to ask such a sensitive question. She turned and entered the venue, deciding it was best to finish her task first.
The seating chart the man had given her was extremely precise, with even the room numbers written out clearly. Placing the cards wasn’t difficult, but getting through all eight conference rooms would be time-consuming.
She worked her way from the first floor to the second. Half an hour flew by, and the reception was about to start.
Seeing the few place cards left in her hand, Claire Sinclair couldn’t help but pick up her pace.
When she finally reached the last conference room, she was surprised to find the names of Adrian Quincy and Governor Lockwood, but not President Helmanro. Furthermore, the room didn’t look like a place set up to receive foreign dignitaries.
’What kind of meeting is this?’
Claire Sinclair desperately wanted to ask him, but she didn’t dare.
Pushing the thought aside, she focused on arranging the place cards.
After setting down the last name card, Claire Sinclair pushed the door open and headed out to find her colleagues.
As she passed a room with its door ajar, she suddenly heard someone call out to her. "Claire Sinclair, perfect timing. Come in for a moment."
It was Phoebe Lockwood’s voice.
Claire Sinclair glanced into the room, puzzled. She didn’t go in, but instead stood at the doorway and asked, "What is it?"
"I left my speech at the office. Go get it for me."
That entitled, princessy attitude of hers was just like her father’s.
Claire Sinclair had to laugh. "Sorry, I have something important to do. I don’t have time to run back to the office. You should ask someone else to get it for you."
Phoebe Lockwood’s expression immediately darkened. "Claire Sinclair, who do you think you’re talking to!"
"Aren’t I talking to you?" Claire Sinclair shot her a look one might give an idiot.
Phoebe Lockwood was furious. "Claire Sinclair, I have to give a speech in front of President Helmanro later! If I mess up, can you bear the responsibility for that?"
’What a joke.’
Claire was genuinely concerned for the woman’s intelligence. "You’re the one meeting with President Helmanro, not me. If your speech goes poorly, what does that have to do with me?"
"You—! Let me tell you something. My father is the governor! Even Editor-in-Chief Summers has to show my dad some respect. Who the hell do you think you are? When I tell you to get something, you get it! Say one more word of nonsense, and I’ll have my dad get you fired from the Astoria Daily. After that, you can forget about ever making it in Aethelgard!"
"So, you’re threatening me?" Claire Sinclair felt a pang of regret. ’I should have brought a recorder to get that on tape.’
’If that got out online, it would cause a massive firestorm.’
Phoebe Lockwood clearly hadn’t considered that possibility. Her tone remained just as arrogant. "So what if I’m threatening you? I’ve never given a second thought to a nobody like you with no connections."
"Hah..." Claire Sinclair let out a small laugh, then turned and walked away.
’If I talk to an idiot for too long, I’m afraid I’ll lower my own IQ.’
Seeing her just walk away, Phoebe Lockwood rushed after her and grabbed her by the arm. "Claire Sinclair, I told you to go get my speech! Didn’t you hear me!"
"I’m not getting it," Claire Sinclair refused coldly.
