Chapter 29: 29. A Desperate Assassin.

The sword moved in a horizontal arc as it aimed for Marco's head, but he swiftly raised his sword to block the attack before leaping backwards to create some distance between him and his opponent.

"Oh, you managed to deflect that?" Sue said with a surprised look on her face.

She had been certain that her surprise attack would decapitate Marco before he even noticed her presence, but to her surprise, he had noticed her on time.

"You...." Marco grimaced as he tightened his grip on his sword.

Looking at the beautiful lady in front of him, Marco knew very well who she was.

He had heard a lot about Sue and how the Von Jurgen Household held her in high regard.

In other words, Sue was an important figure, the kind the Third Prince would prefer to keep alive.

Knowing this, Marco opened his mouth to speak. "Lady Sue, why do you keep fighting for the fourth prince? Please lower your sword because this fight doesn't concern you."

Sue stayed silent for a moment, but her eyes noticed the crimson moon emblem on Marco's cloak, and she finally understood where the assassins were from.

"Does the Crimson Moon Order of Assassins know what it is doing? You're attacking the fourth prince's caravan, the emperor won't be happy if anything were to happen to his son, and that means he will pass a decree for your death and the death of your men." Sue said in warning, but Marco could only burst into laughter.

"Lady Sue, your threats don't scare me. Do you really expect me to believe the Emperor cares about what happens to the fourth prince? If he did, why didn't he send his shadow guards to protect the prince?" Marco asked, but his second-in-command appeared behind him.

"Brother, it doesn't look like she's going to stand down." He warned, and Marco nodded in agreement. freewebnøvel.coɱ

If Sue wasn't going to step aside to let them carry out their mission, then both of them were prepared to fight her together.

Since Sue was very important to the Third Prince, especially towards gaining the support of the Von Jurgen Household, Marco and his brother were prepared to simply exhaust her before landing a surprise blow that would knock her out rather than killing her.

After all, it was impossible for a Fourth Order Swordswoman to easily win against two experienced Fourth Order Swordsmen.

With this, both men grinned and charged forward as they aimed to deliver a few cuts to her arms and legs, but to their surprise, both of them felt one of their arms being completely severed from their shoulders with a single strike.

Marco and his second in command screamed at the pain before collapsing to their knees in both pain and disbelief, while blood gushed out of their shoulders

Their swords clattered to the ground as they both gritted their teeth in agony before staring at Sue in fear.

Wasn't she supposed to be a Fourth Order Swordswoman?

Then, how was it possible for just one Swordswoman to hurt two swordsmen of the same level?

Marco and his brother should be more than enough to take out Sue, but here they were now, on their knees, losing a huge amount of blood.

Marco and his brother slowly raised their heads, only to notice the huge amount of mana swirling around Sue's body with incredible pressure, and their eyes widened more than ever before.

"F-Fifth Order?" Both brothers gasped in surprise at the same time, but Sue simply smiled before taking a step forward and suddenly appearing behind their backs.

Sue's attack was so fast, Marco was barely able to block it in time, so he only suffered a shoulder wound.

However, when he noticed how silent his brother had become, he glanced to his right, only to see a headless body collapsing to the ground.

Seeing this, Marco's heart stopped for a second.

And it was at that moment, he knew that he wouldn't survive the night.

He clenched his fist and wondered how everything had turned upside down.

Not only had the third prince given them false intel, but Marco still couldn't understand how a little spirit had appeared out of nowhere, killed his men, and then disappeared just before the Fourth prince's men had launched their ambush.

'Or was the spirit working with the prince?' He wondered, but he swiftly dismissed the thought out of his mind because it was simply impossible for anyone to ever tame a spirit, much less a lazy person like the fourth prince.

Speaking of the fourth prince, Marco's gaze swiftly turned toward a carriage at the far edge of the forest.

Marco had noticed the carriage for a while now, and unlike all the other carriages scattered around, this one was the only one that remained perfectly intact.

And if he wasn't mistaken, he had noticed a head poking out from it a few times.

In other words, the lazy prince had to be hiding in that carriage.

And so with this thought in mind, Marco turned his attention back to Sue.

Capturing her was out of the question.

And killing her would simply be impossible.

So, that left him with only one option, and that was to somehow get to the carriage, open it, and kill the prince.

Of course, this had to be done before Sue could even predict what he was about to do, and Marco knew this, so he steeled his mind on what he was about to do before tossing his sword straight at her as a distraction.

The blade aimed straight at Sue, but she easily parried it away from her before noticing a magic circle beneath her feet and multiple large icicles sprouting out of the ground to impale her.

However, Sue reacted in time and she was able to easily leap away from Marco's range of attack, but when she looked in his direction to retaliate, she realized that Marco was no longer in front of her.

She glanced around and found him sprinting toward the carriage at the far end of the battlefield.

Since Marco had a strong affinity with ice, all he needed to do was get really close to the prince before launching an ice spear into his heart.

This was the only thought in Marco's mind as he swiftly ran for the carriage.

He'd lost nearly everything tonight, his men, his plan, his advantage, but if he could just kill the Fourth Prince, Marco knew his mission would still be a success.

And so, his feet pounded against the ground as he reached the door and flung it open.

But the carriage was empty.

"What?!" Marco exclaimed, but a calm voice emerged behind him.

"Looking for someone?"

He spun around and completely froze when he saw the Fourth Prince standing before him as two glowing whips of lightning crackled wildly in both of his hands.
