I Level Up Dragons with My Evolution System-Chapter 34: Shaking
As he walked through the long corridors of the "Government Castle," Elder Owen looked out the huge windows at Lor City.
From above, you couldn’t see the academy below. Although it didn’t seem like it, it was divided by sturdy windows that blocked the view from one side. They were magical windows, allowing the sun’s rays to be transmitted downwards as if nothing had happened.
The only entertainment Professor Owen had when walking through these unnecessarily long corridors was seeing that beautiful city in the distance, the people walking and going about their lives, and, even further away, the mountains.
The city was impeccably clean, at least in this area. There were beautiful buildings with decorations that matched the vivid colors of the city.
He always enjoyed this view, especially when he walked slowly. But this time he was not here to enjoy it.
After a quick glance, as was his habit, he continued on his way into the Government Castle and within five minutes reached one of the main offices.
There was a sign on the door: "Principal’s Office."
He knocked on the door.
Seconds later, a young secretary opened it.
"Come in, Elder Owen," said the principal before the secretary could even speak.
Owen nodded and entered.
"I’ll be leaving now, director. Please call me if you need me," said the secretary, before bowing to both of them and exiting through the door.
"It’s unusual for the secretary to have to leave the office just because you call me, principal," said the elder Owen, sitting down on the sofa.
The principal laughed and poured him some coffee. "There are things you’d rather she didn’t hear, right? Secretaries these days have loose lips, you know."
Owen shrugged. "That’s why I don’t have secretaries," he replied, taking a sip of coffee.
"I heard you gave that little Lux an impressive mission," the principal said suddenly, deciding to get straight to the point.
Owen nodded. "I have to test him. Let me see how good he is. He shouldn’t die if he just focuses on the mission I gave him. He should know that completing one is very good, two is incredible. I highly doubt he’ll want to try a third. After all, he seems to have received advice from Miss Ashford."
"What if he dies?" the principal asked directly.
Owen shrugged. "How many students do we lose per year, Principal? For an academy as small as ours, we usually lose between 20 and 30% each year."
"It’s not for you to send them to their deaths, anyway."
"To die?" Owen smiled. "You’d be surprised to learn that boy has a natural talent for swordplay. The first time he picked one up, he beat up a student several years older than him."
The headmaster frowned. "Really?" he asked.
"I saw it with my own eyes."
"I didn’t hear about that," replied the headmaster.
"I didn’t spread the word. I thought it would be dishonorable for a student to die under my tutelage." Owen shrugged again. "You know, because he’s a Lux."
The principal nodded.
A Lux who displayed such great talent would be the prime target for assassination by many people.
Everyone fears the Lux, after all. Although none had displayed outstanding talent since the fall of the Lux Empire.
"Anyway, you can’t let him die like this. He’s a talented young man," said the principal. "One of our star students."
Owen stared at him with a smile, as he sipped his coffee. The delicious flavor went down his throat more than five times before he finally decided to speak.
"Principal, I heard that you had plans to take Morris under your personal tutelage. Is that true?" he asked suddenly.
The principal nodded. "It’s true. He’s a talented young man. I have to nurture him well if I want him to develop properly."
Owen nodded. "I agree with you, principal." He smiled.
"But." Owen spoke again. "Why do you want to use Edward in your scheme?" he asked directly.
The principal frowned and stopped drinking his coffee. "What do you mean, Elder Owen?" He focused all his attention on Owen.
"You want to use the resentment between Lux and the Morrises to make this Morris boy want to destroy him. You don’t trust the Morrises; they’ve had numerous failures in the past trying to cultivate their young. Many of them end up involved with women and drugs, others die from negligence... that’s why you want to take him on yourself."
Owen laughed slightly. "Although this Lux has little talent, he is hated by the Morris boy and several of his allies. If you play your cards right, you could use this Lux very well in the early stages to make Morris grow." He said and shook his head. "That’s pretty sinister of you, principal."
Using a student like that is something that should not be seen in a man as exalted as him.
The principal was stunned by his words. He couldn’t respond.
Owen had hit the nail on the head.
Even as the minutes ticked by, the director couldn’t utter a word. It wasn’t that he couldn’t, it was that he didn’t know what to say.
He had been caught red-handed.
Owen got up after finishing his coffee. "Don’t worry, principal." He said, patting him on the shoulder.
"I understand your concerns. The advance of the cursed lands is unbearable. You need to create the next great generation. Aurora Ashford is already growing well, and young Myles is so good that you can already trust him. You needed someone who could grow faster than you to form the team."
"I know." Owen shrugged. "That’s why I won’t get involved in your affairs. Still, I must warn you about one thing, principal. You’re playing with fire. Remember how dangerous a Renegade can be." he said before leaving.
As he closed the door, a little bird landed on his shoulder and handed him a small piece of paper.
Upon reading it, he frowned. ’What a problem, huh.’
Despite the shocking news, he took it calmly as always. His impassive face even had a smile.
.
In the office, the director poured himself another cup of coffee and sat down on the sofa. He didn’t drink the coffee, he just leaned back and stared at the empty cup on the other side.
"You’re good, Elder Owen." He frowned. "Now I understand why everyone favors you so much."
"But I’m still better than you," he whispered as he grabbed the coffee cup. He noticed that the contents were swaying, so he grabbed his right hand with his left to stop the shaking.
His heart was racing.
