I can upgrade the shelter-Chapter 769 - 667: Veterans Ready
Stepping off the transport plane, Bob carried his luggage, curiously examining this training camp where he would spend two months.
This was a military camp composed of numerous modular buildings, resembling a field army camp in its layout. Structurally, it included not only a rugged airstrip for planes to land but also a vast tarmac for parking Land Ships.
Currently, a large number of small Land Ships assigned to this unit were docked here, with some Flame Country soldiers gathered around them, seemingly engaged in some activity.
Additionally, the camp was dotted with large structures resembling hangars. Many soldiers, like Bob, dressed in military uniforms from various European countries, disembarked from their transport planes and were directed into these buildings.
Bob followed suit, joining the crowd and entering one of the hangar-like buildings.
The entrance to the building appeared to be specially constructed with insulated materials for warmth and protection against the cold. After a brief examination, Bob was allowed to enter.
"What are they checking? Malnutrition?" A soldier, walking behind Bob, inquired of him. He was from another unit and had gotten to chat pleasantly with Bob on the plane, so they stuck together after disembarking.
His mention of malnutrition was not a joke. The soldiers sent here, though appearing to be in decent condition, were limited by the previously dwindling supplies and were somewhat malnourished. Many even looked sallow and gaunt.
Regarding his companion’s question, Bob felt that checking for malnutrition was entirely unnecessary, as everyone here could be considered malnourished. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"Perhaps it’s a quarantine inspection? After all, we’re pretty much all coming from the front lines, and they’re likely concerned that we might have picked up some foreign virus there," Bob speculated, while still keenly observing the interior of the hangar-like building.
Inside the structure was a large open space, not for parking planes, but filled with sets of Exoskeletons, Electromagnetic Rifles, and Power Armor.
Upon seeing the Power Armor, Bob’s gaze grew nostalgic.
Previously, when the Flame Country supply ship transported supplies to the front line, Bob’s company had received some equipment, including several sets of Power Armor.
Due to his excellent performance, Bob was granted the right to use the Power Armor. He wore it in subsequent battles and made a significant impact with remarkable results.
Once, an alien creature breached the defense line and charged into the trenches. It was Bob, relying on the combat enhancement provided by the Power Armor, who killed the alien creature and prevented it from breaching the defense line.
In the process, Bob sustained serious injuries and had to be transferred to a rear hospital for treatment. His set of Power Armor was also damaged during the battle.
Bob had initially felt regret for the damage to his Power Armor and eagerly awaited recovery so he could return to the unit and inquire with his superior about whether the armor could be repaired, hoping he could wear it again.
However, as various European countries drew personnel to form a joint force, Bob did not return to his original unit but instead, along with other recovered wounded soldiers, was sent here to serve as junior officers in the newly-formed joint force.
After all, although the joint force could be considered a new recruit in some sense, the European countries clearly couldn’t recruit a large number of rookies to receive training from the Flame Country and acquire new equipment. They chose to draw a group of recovered veterans from rear hospitals as junior officers to build the officer system of this joint force.
This was a common practice in European countries in the past. When there was no need to maintain a large-scale army, they would usually preserve a corps of officers to maintain a unit’s designation. When the unit was needed, they would gather enough recruits or recovered veterans to fill it, quickly forming a complete unit under the support of the officer corps and veterans.
This approach could also be used in wartime for unit assembly. Given the high intensity of front-line warfare, many units might be scattered, and most wounded soldiers might not be able to return to their original units promptly due to varying recovery times.
At such times, to avoid waste, they would usually be assembled into a new unit.
As a member of this new unit, Bob was still unclear about the mission of this unit, but seeing the equipment displayed on the racks in the hangar, he guessed they might be here to be trained on how to use them.
"Looks like our regiment is going to be fully equipped with Flame Country’s gear?" Bob’s companion asked him with some surprise, given that these Exoskeletons and Electromagnetic Rifles were obviously Flame Country equipment.
"Seems likely, though I’m not sure if I’ll be able to wear the Power Armor again." Bob stared "affectionately" at a set of Power Armor, identical to the one he had used before, eagerly anticipating the chance to wear it once more.
"Wow, looks like you’ve worn it before, so you should have a chance. But I see they haven’t put out many Power Armors; maybe only some of us will get to wear them." Bob’s companion glanced around, noticing the limited quantity of Power Armor.
As they gathered around the gear, chatting in small clusters, a group of Flame Country soldiers entered in neat formation.
A batch of officers from various countries also arrived, among whom Bob noticed an English officer, judging by his rank of captain.
However, leading this batch of officers appeared to be a major from Flame Country.
Bob didn’t think much of it. When the officers and Flame Country soldiers approached, he quickly stood in line with the others to welcome their arrival.
"I think many of you may not yet know why you’ve come here," said the Flame Country major, whose English, to Bob, was quite good despite a slight colonial accent, more like Federal English: "Let me explain—due to the current security situation in various countries and the need for front-line alien creature combat, the nations have formed this joint force to maintain order and, after adapting to the new equipment, be redeployed to the battlefield."
Upon hearing this, Bob immediately became excited, knowing he had another opportunity to wear the Power Armor.
The others were equally excited; who wouldn’t be thrilled with new equipment? Even the next-best Exoskeletons were very popular on the battlefield.
