I Can Tame Everything!-Chapter 24: Assassins!
Chapter 24 - Assassins!
"You, with the silver hair, are you the 100% accuracy guy?" the leader asked in a firm, commanding tone.
"No, we don't know what you're talking about," Rex replied, while walking steadily and ignoring them.
Yet all six assailants stepped forward, blocking their path. The leader smirked knowingly. "Acting smart, huh?"
As they closed in, Rex swiftly checked their status.
[Name: Jonas]
[Rank: Ascender 1-Star]
[Tame {Jonas} - Y/N?]
--
[Name: Denis]
[Rank: Ascender 1-Star]
[Tame {Denis} - Y/N?]
Two 1-stars and four mortals, he noted after glancing at each of them.
{Jonas & Denis} - [Progress: 10%]
{Linda} - [Progress: 15%]
He had gained three extra taming slots, so he decisively started taming three of the assassins—Jonas, Denis, and one of the mortals. After all, to devour them, he had to tame them first...
Why can't I just kill and devour them directly? he grumbled. He could still kill them outright, but that wouldn't grant him any benefits... well, aside from removing a few enemies.
{Father, should I and Ash come out?}
{...No, I'll handle this. But if you sense danger, act immediately,} Rex replied, he was confident he could take on two 1-Star Ascenders.
As the 6 men circled Rex and Darius. Rex asked in a shaky voice, "Why are you doing this?" trying to buy time for...
{Jonas & Denis} - [Progress: 20%] {Linda} - [Progress: 30%]
"Don't blame us. After all, we both have similar reasons," Jonas shrugged.
"...What do you guys want?" Rex asked.
"How did you know the Mudveil Tortoise and the other beasts didn't have a bloodline?"
"I'm an appraiser. That's my job," Rex replied as if it were obvious.
"Haha, you think appraising is that easy? You must have a special ability, right?" The man's tone grew sharper as he took a step closer. "So, I'll give you two options, come with me and serve our boss with that ability... or you both die."
Rex frowned and asked, "Who is your boss?"
"You'll know when I take you there."
"Will you harm us once we come with you?" Darius questioned.
The assassin glanced at him. "That will depend on you two."
"Alright, lead the way. We'll join you," Rex agreed.
Darius shot him a frown, parting his lips to speak, but no words came out.
"Oh? Look at you. I thought there'd be some resistance, but good choice," the assassin sneered.
The group navigated the narrow alleyways lined with houses, inns, and small buildings. Moonlight cast a faint glow on the worn path, the only source of light guiding them through the city's poorer district.
After a few minutes of following them...
Rex's eyes gleamed viciously. The wait was finally over. As they passed beneath a building that loomed over the street, casting a pitch-black shadow, and as soon as the group stepped into the darkness...
Crackle.
A bolt of lightning flickered to life within the shadows, crackling with a purple glow that stood out like a beacon in the night.
Without hesitation, Rex targeted Jonas, aiming to eliminate him in a single strike.
[ZAP!]
The lightning bolt tore through the darkness.
"Aaaa—"
Thud.
System, start taming all the remaining assassins as the slots free up.
"Who the fuck attacked just now?" Rex barked, immediately accusing the assassins for jonas's death.
"Didn't you guys claim we'd be safer if we followed you?" Frustration laced his voice, but a smirk tugged at his lips, concealed in the shadows.
"..."
As Rex shifted the blame, sowing confusion among them, the group stepped out of the shadows, their surroundings finally coming into view.
"Cut the bullshit, you bastard. There's no one else here except us," Denis snapped.
Can he see in this darkness? Rex mused, his mind racing.
Denis stormed forward, grabbing Rex by the collar. "I know it was you! You killed Jonas, you cunning rat. Stop pretending in front of me—you'll pay for this," he snarled, trying to intimidate him.
Why? Because that was all he could do. and Rex was a still...a child.
Rex moved without hesitation. In one swift motion, he drew his dagger and plunged it into Denis's stomach.
...!
Denis's eyes widened in shock. He stumbled back...
However, unbeknownst to Rex, Denis wasn't a combat type.
After striking his stomach, Rex braced himself for a tough fight, readying [Zap] as a flickering bolt of lightning crackled above his head. He stood on guard, expecting a counterattack.
But instead of retaliating, as Denis stumbled back... he suddenly turned and bolted, his speed strangely fast for someone who had just been stabbed.
Rex narrowed his eyes, watching Denis flee in a frantic panic. With a small shake of his head, he released the prepared lightning bolt.
ZAP
The strike hit Denis square in the neck, killing him instantly.
Jonas, the leader had died too abruptly, leaving the mortals in confusion—unsure whether to stay or run. But after witnessing two ranked ones drop dead in an instant...
All four of the assassins panicked and bolted.
Unfortunately, there was only one path with two directions, forcing them to split into two groups in a desperate attempt to distract Rex.
Hoping, atleast one of them could make it alive...
One group rushed straight toward Darius, who swiftly grabbed an assailant and engaged him in a struggle, while the other managed to slip away.
And the one who slipped away was— the last tamed mortal.
A lightning bolt flashed. The assassin collapsed, lifeless.

Rex watched the second group take off and barked after them, his voice sharp and clear. "If you want to stay alive, stop! Run, and you die!"
Then, with a cold warning, he added, "Linda ran, so she died... Make your choice."
The other group skidded to a halt, fear gripping them. After witnessing Linda's fate, they hesitated before slowly turning back, their steps cautious and trembling.
"W-will you really spare us?" one assassin dared to questionn, his voice reflecting fear.
Swoosh!
Rex threw the dagger he had just used to kill Denis. And with only 60% of his strength behind it, the blade sliced clean through the man's heart.
The same devouring message flashed before Rex's eyes, but he ignored it, keeping his focus on the two remaining assassins—while the other four already lay dead.
Among the two, one was cautiously approaching him, while the other was locked in combat with Darius.
"I'm the one who asks the questions," Rex stated firmly. Of course, he had already decided to kill them all. He was simply biding his time, waiting for the taming to finish.
The assassin swallowed hard, nodding stiffly as he took careful, measured steps forward. He didn't dare make a sound, fearing that even the slightest misstep would give Rex an excuse to kill him for petty reasons.
Rex shifted his gaze toward Darius.
The mortal assassin was surprisingly stronger than Darius, and from the corner of his eye, Rex caught a subtle movement—his opponent was preparing a dirty trick to kill Darius.
