Chapter 9 - Ignorance Is Bliss.

...

"How far away is the Great Whirlwind sect, would they even be able to avenge you? The desert is limitless."

The bandit leader continues laughing, poking fun at Xuan Wu's group.

By now, Zi Rougang's face is so red, you could even compare it to a tomato.

"Y-you! Insolent! Obviously our sect would be able to avenge us!"

The bandit leader stops laughing, quickly turning stern.

"You think they'd care for 5 newly admitted disciples? Unless at least one of you has high-grade talent, good luck trying to flaunt around being a Great Whirlwind disciple."

Xuan Wu's eyes narrow.

"This guy, his emotions change too fast. One moment he's goofy, another he's laughing, and now he's serious."

[Others]

[Quan Cho] [Title: Hunky Bandit Leader. Effects: +2x strength, +6% leadership ability, +3x authority.]

[Cultivation: Trained Mortal]

[Personality: Multifaceted, contemptuous, gym-rat...]

Xuan Wu's eyes widen.

"Trained Mortal? He's above us than."

Another muscular man steps up, flexing his muscles.

"Boss, that girl there, hehe, can I have her?"

The other bandits cackle.

Zuo Lingxins eyes water, and she takes a step back.

The searing heat mixed with the shock from the bandit's words caused her to fall, her head feels light.

Bai Yu's eyes narrow dangerously.

"You dare? Incompetent mortal, I'll teach you to behave yourself."

Suddenly, everything goes dark around the bandit who made that comment.

"Huh? Boss!"

He trips, falling to the ground.

Xie Yun tries to get up, yet he keeps slipping.

He tries yet again, yet he still slips.

He has no idea why, but he just keeps getting back up and slipping.

This goes on for what feels like hours.

Until, he looks down at his hands.

Xie Yun's breath quickens, he shakes his head and desperately tries to believe that this is a dream.

Looking at his hands, it's as if he is a young child.

He pinches himself, this is reality, not a dream.

"Haha, Fang Lin, what are you doing sitting here alone?"

He hears a voice coming from behind him. How familiar, it's like he knows who the child who spoke those words are, yet it feels so indistinct.

SMACK!

Xie Yun feels a harsh pain, falling to the ground. His cheeks burns. The child behind him seems to have slapped him.

He turns around, and his eyes widen.

He knows who this child is.

This child has been with him his entire life.

That's because this child—is him.

In the reflection of his child-self's eyes, he sees who he currently is.

Fang Lin!

That's right, he remembers now.

That child he always used to make fun of, always bully.

"How did I become Fang Lin!"

Smack!

He falls to the barren ground again.

"What nonsense are you speaking?"

The child Xie Yun laughs at him.

"No, stop this!"

Smack!

"Please, stop!"

No matter how Xie Yun pleaded, he kept getting smacked, over and over, till his cheeks bled and his face was disfigured.

"Huh!"

Xie Yun's eyes open.

In front of him is the group of 6, he remembers them.

Was it all just a dream? Was it an illusion? No way, it was so... vivid.

He looks at Zuo Lingxin, the young girl he made a comment about.

He falls down, head hitting the sand, as he desperately tries to shuffle back.

"No! No! No! Get away from me!"

Tears spill from his eyes.

"Xie Yun, what's wrong with you!"

The hunky bandit leader expresses concern in his eyes, clasping Xie Yun's shoulders.

All of a sudden, Xie Yun's head drops.

He saw a shadow behind Zuo Lingxin.

His breath fades, his heart stops.

"Did you do this?"

Her heart quickens, someone died because of her.

Her mind is in turmoil, internally begging for a 'no' answer.

"He got what was coming to him."

The shadow turns its head around.

Zuo Lingxin drops down, sobbing uncontrollably, her knees graze against the rough sand.

Bai Yu looks at her with heartfelt eyes.

"This was for you. Cultivators need to accept death."

Zi Rougang rushes to Zuo Lingxin.

"Hey, what's wrong?"

He hugs her.

Fatty Wang puts his head down, looking right at the fallen Xie Yun.

Xuan Wu spits.

"How useless, are cultivators even supposed to cry? The enemy just died, why are you spilling tears for him?"

Fatty Wang turns to Xuan Wu.

"We cultivators are supposed to be strong—and that's a fundamental part of what makes a cultivator. But we aren't cultivators just yet. If this is her first time watching someone drop dead, of course it'll hit her hard."

Xuan Wu nods, accepting Fatty Wang's words.

"Makes sense, though I would never cry for the enemy."

He taps his foot on the sand.

The hunky bandit leader looks at the fallen Xie Yun, then at the group of 6.

"I-Immortals!"

He quickly dashes off, along with the rest of his gang, leaving the carriage and bulky horse there alone.

Kong Jian steps up, looting the carriage.

"That bandit probably died of heat stroke. It happens, come, there's free stuff in this carriage."

"I knew this fatty was a sneaky rat!"

Xuan Wu grumbles, helping Kong Jian loot the carriage.

Most of it is supplies, some mortal currency.

But there was one spiritual gem.

Spiritual gems are a cultivators currency, they contain unfiltered spiritual energy.

You can get way more efficiency cultivating using them rather than cultivating using natural spiritual energy in the air.

...

"You've been following us for the last couple of days."

Xun Shi and Li Huan sit around a campfire, eating roasted fish they caught.

The mysterious disciple hops down from the tree she was watching them from, taking her hood off.

"How'd you know?"

Xun Shi turns his head around, licking his oily fingers.

"Cheng Lian."

...

"AHH!! I told you not to take the Brazen passageway!"

Dong Shui, Feng Zhi, Lei Ming, and the other two friends run away from an angry brown bear.

Feng Zhi grabs a rock, hurling it at the bear.

"If we just work together, we'll take care of this bear easily."

Dong Shui's stomach rumbles.

"Yeah, then we'll eat it."

Xu Bo looks at Dong Shui suspiciously.

"Dong Shui, lately you've been wanting to eat everything, what's wrong with you?"

"I'm just hungry!"

Dong Shui lunges at the bear with his iron sword he obtained from the sect.

Shing!

The bear starts bleeding, and it gets even more aggrivated.

"I'll take care of it!"

Feng Zhi jumps on a rock, getting on top of the bear, then he wrestles it down to the ground.

Combined with the effort of five people, the bear successfully dies.

"Hah, finally, stupid bear."

Gu Feng kicks the dead bear, his sweat soaking his clothing.

Dong Shui spits.

"It was your fault we got chased by this bear Gu Feng! Why'd you have to go and provoke it!"

Gu Feng turns around, about to start another argument when Feng Zhi interferes.

"Enough, we don't want any in-fighting, we took care of the bear, and that is enough."

"Are we going to eat it?"

Dong Shui licks his lips.

...

Sect leader Gao Yong kneels before a statue.

"Great elder... all of the newly admitted disciples have ventured out of the sect, accepting their initiate missions."

A voice comes from the marble statue.

"Good, this'll weed out the weak disciples. You know, you're really pathetic, allowing low-grade cultivation talent disciples into the sect."

Gao Yong lowers his head.
