Chapter 88

Karrolf suggested that Alexa observe the wolves firsthand. Upon hearing this, Alexa initially thought of quietly asking Ysildus for help. She never imagined things would unfold like this.

“Here comes Wolf Number One!”

Visten, who was hosting the event, shouted enthusiastically. Visten, in a particularly good mood, willingly took on his role since everyone else had thrown their hats into the ring as participants. The first wolf, Essellia, stepped onto the stage. Standing tall on stiff legs, Essellia lifted her head proudly.

“Alexa, make sure to take a close look. As thoroughly as you wish.”

Visten said kindly. Alexa, seated at a table, awkwardly glanced back at Visten. This wasn’t her doing – the idea of hosting a ‘Best Wolf Contest’. Alexa swallowed hard. It made sense now that Karrolf had spoken to Carlisle on her behalf.

That conversation had taken place two days ago. Carlisle had then organized this event specifically for Alexa, claiming that observing various wolves would benefit her and that they might as well crown the most magnificent one. The wolves had agreed with the plan.

‘Just why?’

Alexa couldn’t grasp why it mattered which was the most magnificent. To her, all wolves were equally impressive. It’s natural for people to admire and revere qualities they don’t possess, and Alexa was no different.

She found wolves beautiful because of their strength and power – qualities she lacked. Their silver fur, glowing like moonlight, and sapphire eyes seemed exquisite to her. But the need for a contest eluded her.

‘How did it come to this?’

Alexa rose from the table, still feeling awkward. Essellia lowered her head toward her, touching Alexa’s palm with her damp nose. Their gazes met, and Alexa felt an overwhelming admiration.

“You’re truly beautiful.”

Karrolf had once explained that many of the Thersion clan had blue eyes because they were descendants of the Dark Clan, eyes colored like the sky to capture the light.

Essellia licked Alexa’s palm. The warm sensation passed, followed by the soft glide of her silver fur slipping through Alexa’s fingers. Alexa slowly circled around Essellia, taking in her size, so much larger than ordinary wolves.

‘The bone structure is different.’

There was a clear contrast between Essellia and the descriptions of regular wolves from the books. Alexa began to mentally note her observations. Visten rang a bell.

“Next!”

At the sound of the bell, Terrun stepped in. Terrun and Essellia had insisted on going first, while Ysildus and Carlisle claimed the main star should appear last. The other wolves from the Thersion clan filled the middle slots.

Whether she wanted to or not, Alexa meticulously studied each one. She had completed Karrolf’s assignment thoroughly. Alexa could now clearly distinguish the differences between the Thersion wolves and regular ones, feeling the warmth of their blood and life through her hands. The Thersion wolves, descendants of the mighty Wolf God, were living legends.

When the event ended, Alexa found herself at a crossroads.

“So, who’s the most magnificent wolf?”

Carlisle, arms crossed in a regal stance, asked. His smile was beautiful, but his piercing blue eyes seemed to scrutinize Alexa.

“Who do you think is the most magnificent?”

Ysildus also inquired, followed by Terrun. Alexa glanced at all the wolves gathered in the hall. Simply saying they were all magnificent wouldn’t satisfy them. She knew she had to make a choice.

Carlisle was the most powerful figure in this castle, and it was he who orchestrated this event. It wasn’t hard to guess his motive. Alexa forced an awkward smile.

“Of course, it’s you, Your Excellency. The most magnificent wolf is you.”

She repeated herself to make sure the point was clear. Carlisle ran a hand over his face, as if to hide a smile.

“Exactly.”

The outcome had been inevitable. Who in Thersion could possibly surpass Carlisle? Turning away from Alexa, Carlisle paced the hall, unable to show his amusement.

“I am the most magnificent and good wolf.”

He now had three titles. ‘Most Magnificent’ had been deliberately chosen when naming the event. All eyes followed Carlisle’s movements. He finally stopped once he regained control over his emotions, turning back to Alexa.

“You did well today. Did you learn a lot?”

“Yes, Your Excellency! Thank you for your help.”

“You’ve worked hard studying. Hosting you in the guesthouse was worth every bit. Tonight, we will hold a grand feast in your honor! All expenses are on me. After all, I am the most magnificent and noble wolf.”

Carlisle burst into laughter.

Ysildus and Terrun flanked Alexa on either side. As declared by Carlisle, a grand feast was held. Though it was said to be in Alexa’s honor, everyone knew it was a celebration of victory. Alexa, visibly tired, picked at her food.

“Do you really think Father is the most magnificent?”

“Really? Then what about me?”

Alexa realized she needed to trace the origins of this whole affair. Carlisle had certainly emphasized being the most magnificent and noble wolf.

“Good… That’s where it all started.’

Suppressing a sigh, Alexa understood that if she had known how much they craved praise, she would have chosen her words more carefully. And she now understood that she should never compliment them all the same way. They couldn’t bear to be seen as lesser than anyone else, but they also didn’t want to be seen as equal. After some deliberation, Alexa spoke.

“Terrun, you’re adorable. Really adorable.”

“Adorable Terrun...”

And she knew she had gotten it right when she saw the satisfaction on Terrun’s face. Next was Ysildus. Alexa turned to him. Though smiling, he reminded her of Carlisle at that moment. She sensed that if she didn’t give him a satisfying answer, he wouldn’t let her go.

Magnificent, adorable, beautiful – she had already used all those words. What was left?

“Charming! Ysildus is charming.”

“Charming Ysildus… I like it. Charming Alexa.”

Blushing, Alexa turned back to her food, wondering why the Thersion clan was so peculiar. She shook her head slightly and resumed her meal.

‘No, it’s me who’s strange...’

Alexa scrunched her nose and stuffed a bite into her mouth.

Selina checked Alexa’s bedding and softly brushed her hair. Despite the ever-present watch of the maids, Alexa had learned to act as if nothing was wrong.

“Lady Alexa, did you enjoy yourself today?”

“Mm… Yes. I did.”

Alexa nodded. Though it had been embarrassing and awkward, she couldn’t say it hadn’t been fun. She enjoyed watching the wolves and feeling their wet noses against her palms. The gentle wolves even rolled onto their backs, letting her rub their bellies. Their soft paws pressed against her hands.

Was this the world of happy puppies? Either way, it had been a joyful day.

“I’m glad. Tomorrow will bring more joy for you, Lady Alexa. Now, it’s time for bed.”

“Tomorrow...”

Tomorrow was the last day of the year. Once it passed, Alexa would turn seventeen. And with the new year, Jeremiah would arrive at Thersion.

Alexa lay down, having done all she could. Now, she could only hope the seeds she had planted would bear fruit. Jeremiah might recognize Selina. He might elevate her to the position of the main heroine. Or perhaps Jeremiah would side with the Imperial Family this time.

‘You can handle it again, Alexa.’

Just as she always had. Alexa’s heart fluttered with a mix of excitement and anxiety. As she finished preparing for bed, Ysildus crawled into her bed.

‘But next year, Ysildus will be fifteen…’

She wondered how much longer he planned to sleep here. Alexa scooted closer to the wall.

“Alexa?”

“Hm? No, it’s just a little cramped.”

“… I thought you didn’t like me anymore.”

Ysildus said with a hint of sadness.

‘He’s got a long way to go.’

Sensing that their strange sleeping arrangements would continue for a while, Alexa rolled back toward him.

“Of course not. Let’s sleep. I’m tired.”

“Sweet dreams, Alexa.”

With a contented expression, Ysildus placed a kiss on the edge of her sleeve.
