Karrolf looked at him and took a step back, a chill running down his spine. This could be the end of the world – two Carlisles! The smaller one opened his mouth.
“Where’s Alexa?”
“She... in the Endeltehrium.”
The Head Maid answered. Essellia praised her for sending Alexa, Selina and Terrun to the Endeltherium. Ysildus stood up when he heard her answer. He is going to Alexa. As he watched his back moving without a sound like a ghost, Karrolf thought, ‘Should I let Alexa run?’
But I don’t think that’s going to save her... Karrolf swallowed a heavy sigh.
* * *
Ysildus knocked on the door of Endeltehrium. Even though he just became a human, he wasn’t in a hurry and waited for Alexa to open the door. Alexa is weak. She might run away if he frightened her.
He had actually woken up before Alexa, but lay there motionless, waiting for her to leave the room. The time felt oddly not boring at all, perhaps because the person involved was Alexa.
Ysildus curled his smooth lips into a slight smile. And his feelings haven’t changed since then. Despite showing a kind of consideration uncharacteristic of a wolf, it didn’t feel strange to him. In fact, Ysildus was more than willing to put effort into making sure Alexa didn’t escape.
“Alexa, it’s me.”
After a while without any movement, he called out to Alexa. Only then did the door slowly creak open. Even though it wasn’t a familiar voice, he needed to fix that habit of opening the door so abruptly. Otherwise, a beast like Ysildus might come barreling through it.
“… Ysu?”
“It’s me.”
Ysildus nodded.
“Do you... remember me?”
“You told me that I should remember you.”
Alexa’s eyes widened in surprise. Her gaze sparkled as she looked Ysildus up and down. Ysildus silently savored the rich emotions reflected in her eyes, waiting for her to adjust to his new appearance.
“Are you really Ysildus?”
“I kept my promise. Praise me.”
Ysildus lowered his head, speaking in a slightly awkward tone. Of course, he could speak more smoothly and skillfully if he wanted to. But since he hadn’t lost any of his memories, he knew what Alexa was sensitive to. She tended to be weak against things that were clumsy and endearing, just as she had been with him and Terrun.
“Praise me.”
When Alexa didn’t respond, Ysildus spoke again, almost pleadingly. Alexa hesitated for a moment before reaching out to gently stroke Ysildus’ hair. The sensation of his hair slipping through her fingers felt unfamiliar. Alexa hunched her shoulders. The look in Ysildus’s eyes, which met hers with an innocent curiosity, was as pure as ever.
‘Do I look strange?’
Why does Ysildus seem so unfamiliar and frightening? He looked like a newborn duckling just emerging from its shell. In reality, it was highly likely that Ysildus didn’t know much about the world. Even if he had consistently remembered and called her name, it didn’t change that fact.
If someone who had lived as a wolf suddenly became human and was proficient at it, that would indeed be strange. Moreover, the increasingly familiar sensation of his hair under her fingers was undoubtedly helping to calm Alexa’s mind and spirit.
“… Ysildus?”
“Yes.”
It was really him. Alexa was bewildered. She had expected that Ysildus wouldn’t remember anything. In the novel, the male lead lost all his memories as soon as he became a human. He even forgot Selina... But thanks to her female lead buff, he quickly warmed up to Selina. It felt strangely fascinating.
Ysildus tilted his head and gently grabbed Alexa’s wrist. Alexa’s eyes widened in surprise. Ysildus softly smiled and rested his cheek against Alexa’s palm.
“Alexa.”
He asked again, making sure it was her.
“Alexa.”
“Yes.”
“Alexa.”
“Why?”
Ysildus bashfully smiled and rubbed his cheek against Alexa’s hand. Ysildus’ eyes were fixed on Alexa, as if telling her he would never forget her – as he had always done as a young wolf.
* * *
Ysildus was quite adept at controlling his aura, to the point that it was hard to imagine that he had just become a human. His sharply refined aura shot toward Terrun. Terrun clicked his tongue with a sullen expression.
‘Just look at him.’
I knew it. I knew this would happen once Ysildus became human. Ysildus was naturally possessive and clingy by nature. He was like that even when he was a wolf cub, and now that he had completed his second spurt growth, he had just shed his skin and acted like an all-knowing fox. He totally fits his title ‘abominable fox cub’.
Terrun clicked his tongue and turned away. He wanted to go to Alexa, but he couldn’t. Ysildus was still hovering around her and wary of others. It looks like it would be difficult to go near her unless Ysildus gave his permission.
‘D**ned devil.’
If I had known this, I would have prayed every night that Ysildus would never become a human. Terrun rubbed his cheek in irritation. The energy inside Endeltherium was overwhelming, resonating with Ysildus’. Endeltherium had also recognized that Ysildus would be its next master. Terrun raised his head feeling out of breath.
The same went for Selina. Everytime Ysildus’ sharp blue eyes swept over her, she felt chills. Alexa remained composed despite being faced with a terrifying monster. Just what kind of blessing did she receive to be loved by a monster like that? She was going crazy with jealousy.
What makes Selina so different from Alexa that she couldn’t easily have anything? She had sent letters to Ruella pleading with her for help. She thought that she couldn’t handle Alexa alone. Since Ruella knows how to do this and that, she must have a way to deal with Alexa.
But Ruella didn’t even reply. Once again, Selina was alone. She let out a heavy breath and turned her head away. She realized that she couldn’t escape Ysildus anywhere in the mansion. She gritted her teeth as she touched her neck.
‘No!’
It felt as if Ysildus would bite her neck at any moment.
‘Does he remember what happened that time?’
Anxiety crept up and grabbed Selina’s ankle. She remembered what happened that day. She pushed Alexa and Ysildus jumped after her. If Ysildus remembered what happened...!
She got goosebumps. A wolf with that much favor and affection for Alexa could easily snap her neck without a second thought. From what she had seen in Ysildus’ behavior, he was more than capable of doing that. Selina took a step back. At that moment, she accidentally met eyes with Ysildus. His blue eyes narrowed into sharp, intense crescents.
‘He’s smiling...?’
She didn’t know what he meant by that. She decided to lay flat on the ground and hold her breath, just to avoid giving Ysildus any reason to notice her. If the Alexa she had seen – kind and gentle – were the one without memories of that day, she wouldn’t just stand by and let the wolves of Thersion harm Selina. D**n it, but yes, that was the only hope she had right now.
‘At least, it was better than dying like a dog, right?’
Somehow, Alexa had always shown a foolishly weak side to Selina, and that might be of some help in this situation. Ysildus’s awakening had stirred various thoughts among people, each with their own perspective.
* * *
“Hmm, so a wolf had awakened?”
The figure standing atop the high spire let out a rugged laugh. The world is full of unexpected happenings. And the early awakening of Thersion’s young wolf was one of them.
“Selina must be surprised, then.”
She toyed with the beak of the hawk perched on her arm. The woman’s blue eyes, gazing at the sunset beyond the horizon, darkened. Her hair, resembling the colors of the sunset, flowed down to her waist.
The woman removed a letter from the hawk’s leg and sent it off again. The bird would return when it had finished its play and hunt.
She then withdrew into the spire. Her name was Ruella, and she was the master of the spire.
