Chapter 55: I’m Not A Dangerous Mimic!

The liars exchanged glances, trying their best not to look at Roxanna directly.

To be honest, they were all waiting for Zeir to speak first, while Zeir himself honestly wanted to be the last one to talk.

"Luan... you just said earlier that you knew I was a different person," Roxanna said, turning to Luan. "But just now, you said you didn’t notice anything."

"That—"

Luan stopped mid-sentence when he heard Roxanna’s thoughts.

[I really hate liars. My ex-husband lied to me all the time, but maybe most husbands really are liars.]

Luan cursed silently in his head and gave up on lying right away. There was no way he wanted to be compared to her ex-husband.

"Yes. I did know," Luan admitted. He glanced at the others, clearly asking for help, but they all turned their heads away, leaving him alone to deal with it.

"I did say you’re not the Roxanna I remember," Luan continued after taking a deep breath. "But... does that really matter? You’re different, sure. But what’s the problem?"

"What?" Roxanna tilted her head, truly confused. "The problem? Shouldn’t I be the problem here? I—I took your wife’s body!"

Roxanna immediately covered her mouth when she accidentally blurted that out. She hadn’t even expected herself to say it so bluntly.

Now that she had confessed the truth, there was no way to take it back.

She looked around hesitantly, expecting her husbands to look confused or angry, but... nothing.

None of them looked shocked, and not a single one of them was angry after hearing her words.

"W-Why aren’t you mad?" Roxanna asked, her voice shaking. "I just admitted I took your wife’s body!"

"Because we don’t see it as a problem," Zeir said at last.

Roxanna pressed her lips together. "But... isn’t taking someone else’s body a serious problem?"

"Well, yeah, of course," Azul said with a hiss. "But that’s only if the person is worth being sad over, while our wife—well, you probably know what she was like, from her memories."

"We were honestly waiting for her to die," Luan said bluntly. "So since you already did that for us, we don’t really mind."

Roxanna was left speechless. She didn’t even know what to say after hearing their words.

[How can they accept me so easily?] Roxanna’s lips trembled slightly, and her eyes grew wet. [Back then, I had to work so hard just to be liked by people. But with them... it hasn’t even been a week since we met.]

"You... you really don’t mind?" Roxanna asked in a small voice. "But I... I’m a different person, and I’ll probably trouble you a lot since I don’t know many things about this world yet, and... and... I also don’t want you to leave! I’m sorry."

"Why are you apologizing?" Azul gently pulled her into his arms and hugged her. "Don’t cry."

His gentle tone only made Roxanna want to cry even more.

"Because... because I released your crystal seals," Roxanna whispered. "You don’t have any reason to stay with me anymore."

"But we want to," Azul said, rubbing her back.

On the other side, Zeir patted her head, brushing his fingers over her fox ears and the top of her head. "We don’t have any obligation to stay with you," he said, "But I choose to stay with you. I don’t know about the others—"

"I already made my vow," Cyrus cut in calmly. "I’ll stay with you forever."

"I don’t have any reason to leave you either," Luan said as well. "Besides, we have built our house together."

"My wife, I will never leave you alone." Calen suddenly pulled her away from Azul and held both of her hands tightly. "You didn’t leave me today, so I’ll never leave you. I’ll stay with you forever!"

Roxanna couldn’t find the right words to describe what she was feeling. She never thought there would be a day when people would choose to stay with her without being forced, without being tied down.

[Usually, I have to try so hard to keep people by my side. But now... I didn’t even do anything special.] Roxanna thought.

[I’m basically useless, and yet they still accept me.]

Useless?

Her husbands completely disagreed with that.

Roxanna was anything but useless. She had helped them build the well, create a perfect home together, and she ran to Calen without hesitation when he was close to death.

She needed to stop thinking so poorly of herself, because if she hadn’t taken over the evil Roxanna’s body, they would still be suffering even now.

"Thank you..." Tears kept falling as she spoke. "I promise I’m not a dangerous mimic."

"We know," Zeir said gently. "You’re not dangerous."

"And I honestly didn’t kill your wi—ex-wife. I just suddenly woke up here after I died." She lifted her face, only to see anger on her husbands’ expressions this time.

[Why are they angry?! Didn’t I just say that I didn’t kill their wife?!]

But it had nothing to do with their ex-wife.

They were angry because they remembered why Roxanna was here. It was because her ex-husband had left her to freeze to death.

"Was your ex-husband also a bad person?" Calen asked softly.

Roxanna nodded. "He was cruel to me, but... maybe I just wasn’t good enough."

"That’s not true!" Calen grabbed her shoulders and spoke from the bottom of his heart. "You were always more than enough. Your ex-husband was the one who was wrong. It was his loss for treating you that way. If he couldn’t value you, then we will!"

Roxanna opened her mouth to speak, but she suddenly heard loud howling coming from afar. The demon wolves had likely returned to their den, and after seeing their comrade beheaded, they were furious.

"Alright, we need to go now." Zeir immediately took Roxanna from Calen and carried her in his arms. "They’ll probably chase after us if we stay here any longer."

"Wait," Roxanna said quickly, stopping him before he could take a step. "They must have already caught our scent since we came into contact with their dead buddy. If we go back to the settlement like this, they’ll follow us straight inside."
