Chapter 411: Chapter 411 Warmth

The phone steadied in Aunt Ly’s hand, still held at a careful distance so it wouldn’t disturb her mom. And there she was at last..leaning against the pillows, eyes soft, smile gentle, her fingers idly playing with the edge of the bedsheet just like she used to. Even though she couldn’t hear Alina clearly through the screen, she seemed to sense her presence. She shifted slightly, looking toward the phone with a quiet, instinctive smile, as if her daughter were standing right beside the bed.

"Mom..." Alina breathed, covering her mouth as relief, love, and longing poured through her all at once, so overwhelming it made her chest ache.

"Aunt Ly... please tell her I love her," she whispered, wiping the corner of her eyes. Her voice trembled with everything she had been holding inside. "Tell her I’ll come home soon."

"I will, child," her aunt replied softly.

**

The afternoon light spilled across the playroom floor when Alina stepped inside. The moment she saw the two little figures exactly where they always seemed to be, her heart melted like warm wax. Sable sat on the carpet with his doll tucked carefully in his lap, humming something soft, while Lucien was bent over a notebook, his tiny brows pulled together as he practiced neat letters in serious concentration.

"Hey, little sunshines," she called gently, her voice filled with that warm motherly softness she hadn’t even realised had become a part of her.

Two small heads lifted at the same time.

"Mom??!" they exclaimed together, pure joy bursting in their voices. Both boys ran toward her with those wobbly little steps that always made her heart feel too full.

Alina lowered herself to the floor and opened her arms wide. They crashed into her, one on each side, their little bodies pressing against her with complete trust. Their scent, their warmth, the soft brush of their hair against her cheek–everything lit something inside her that felt like home.

"Do you guys want to come and meet Mom’s family?" she asked softly, brushing Sable’s hair back with gentle fingers. "My mom would love to meet you two."

Both boys froze.

Lucien blinked slowly, thoughtful as always. Sable hugged his doll closer, his round eyes full of questions.

Before she could reassure them, a familiar presence filled the room with its quiet, commanding warmth.

"Of course they will come."

His deep, smooth voice drifted across the space, and Alina turned her head to find Dante standing in the doorway. The soft light caught his horns and the edge of his jaw, making him look impossibly composed and powerful. She couldn’t help the smile that rose in her eyes...a soft, blooming smile she didn’t even try to hide from him anymore.

Dante walked forward, his stride slow and steady. He sat beside her on the carpet without hesitation. One arm curled around her waist, settling there as if it was the most natural place for his hand to be, and her breath caught at how effortlessly he held her.

"We’ll go together," he said gently, glancing at the boys. Then his eyes sharpened in that protective way only he had. "But there are a few precautions we are going to take."

Lucien nodded immediately, taking it seriously like he always did. Sable looked between the two of them before whispering, "So... we can meet Mom’s mom?"

Alina’s heart melted all over again. "Yes, sweetheart."

"And... will she like us?" he asked in a tiny voice.

Dante’s arm tightened around Alina. "If she has even a fraction of Alina’s heart," he said softly, "she will love you."

Slowly, both boys’ faces blossomed into bright, hopeful smiles.

"We are going with Mom," Lucien said firmly.

"Yes! I want to meet Mommy’s family!" Sable added, hugging her arm tight.

Alina kissed the tops of their heads, breathing them in, feeling her heart stretch wider than she ever imagined it could.

••••••

Night settled gently over the house, painting every corner with a quiet stillness. Alina sat on the edge of the bed, smoothing the blanket over two sleepy little bodies tucked beneath it. Their hair was still fluffy from their bath, their cheeks warm and rosy, their breaths slow and uneven as sleep hovered close.

Sable shifted closer to Lucien, clutching his doll tightly. His small voice was barely a whisper. "I miss my all friends..." He missed the classroom, Boo’s gossip, Luna’s howling, Drake’s excited stories, the games, the noise, the laughter. Everything.

Alina’s heart squeezed at the sadness hidden behind his tiny words. She reached out and brushed her fingers through his soft hair, feeling how quickly he leaned into her touch.

"I miss them too," she said with a warm smile. "They’re probably sleeping right now too... dreaming of playing with you again."

Sable’s brows pulled together in a tiny pout. "I want to play with them tomorrow..." He and Lucien were so bored at home without their friends.

Lucien, half asleep, mumbled, "Tomorrow is holiday, silly... we can’t go..."

"But I miss them..." Sable whispered again, his voice wobbling this time.

Alina leaned closer, rubbing slow circles on his back. "We’ll meet them soon, sweetheart. You’ll have so many stories to tell them when school starts again."

Lucien lifted his sleepy eyes to her face and softened. "Mom... can you stay until we sleep?"

Her chest warmed. "Of course. I’m right here."

Sable gave a tiny sigh and curled into his pillow. Lucien slid his hand toward her, catching her wrist and holding it gently, like he needed that quiet connection to feel at peace.

She stayed with them, stroking their soft hair, humming a low, soothing tune that wrapped the room in comfort. Their breathing slowly became steady, their little bodies relaxing as sleep finally took them.

Alina lingered for a moment longer, watching the gentle rise and fall of their chests. The room felt warm, full of soft breaths and innocence. She leaned down again, unable to resist.

"Good night, little sunshines... my sweet balls of light," she whispered softly. She kissed Sable’s forehead first, then leaned toward Lucien and brushed her lips gently against the center of his brow, letting her love settle over them like a blessing.

Both boys shifted slightly at her touch, sinking deeper into sleep, their faces relaxing beautifully.

With a warm breath she straightened, tucking the blanket carefully around their shoulders. She dimmed the lights until a soft, sleepy glow remained.

Then, with slow steps and a tender smile, she slipped out into the hallway and closed the door quietly behind her.
