Mikhail anxiously walked through the grey forest with a short spear in his hand.
With a sigh, he dismissed the status screen and looked around, trying his best to find any zombies.
’Only ten more exp.’
He thought to himself while playing with his short spear.
’Come on, where are you, my dear zombie~.’
It had been a week since he had gotten serious about levelling up. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
Even though there had been some hiccups here and there, Mikhail’s life had sailed smoothly.
He balanced his life between helping Daniel with his cases, spending time with Olivia and hunting monsters.
He had grown rapidly to the point of almost reaching level 10.
’...I did learn a lot in a week.’
"Mikhail, can we stop now?"
A voice made him stop in his tracks as he looked back towards Kevin.
"We will be late at this rate."
He showed him his watch and there was only half an hour left before twelve o’clock.
’....Right, today is the college screening.’
Mikhail thought grumpily and looked around in hopes of finding any zombies.
But in the end there was nothing as both of them had hunted everything nearby.
Mikhail let out a sigh and put his spear back in his holster.
"Let’s go back." He said and changed direction. "I heard Madam Liliana is quite strict about discipline."
Liliana was the vice president of the Imperial University and for some reason she was visiting the City of Sparrows for the screening.
It was said she was like a cat, extremely aggressive with those she wasn’t familiar with.
’...Unlike you.’
Mikhail thought, gently rubbing the head of Methew who sat on his shoulder.
His gaze flickered back towards Kevin who was oddly less talkative.
"What are you thinking?" Mikhail couldn’t help but ask.
Kevin gave him a look and sighed. "About the screening."
’Ah, is he worried he won’t get into the university?’
Mikhail made a guess. He slowed down his steps and walked by his side.
"Don’t think too much." He said encouragingly. "You will get into the Imperial University easily."
"I am worried about you, retard." Kevin said suddenly. "It will pain my heart if I had to go on a separate path leaving my child behind."
Like he had been enlightened, he added. "Is this how fathers who go out to buy milk and never come back feel like?"
Mikhail’s lips twitched. He raised his hand and smacked the back of Kevin’s head.
---
Mikhail and Kevin took the first mana bus and reached the school in time.
After cleaning themselves up in the locker room they changed out of their hunting gear and into their gym clothes.
Having already been instructed beforehand, both of them made their way into the open roof auditorium.
The seats in the oval shaped auditorium were all empty. The students of their class remained standing on the ground.
A pod had been constructed on the upper side of the auditorium, covered by light-obstructing glass.
Mikhail and Kevin joined their class as the students buzzed with excitement and fear.
The boy in front of them was Johnny Blue, Stalker of the Baron rank.
"Yo, pervert." Kevin greeted him with a smile. "I see you are doing well."
Johnny’s lips twitched as he glared at Kevin. "Don’t call me that!"
Mikhail held back his chuckle and asked seriously. "Is there something we should know?"
The young boy looked at Mikhail and his demeanour changed. He smiled and said.
"No, there have been no changes in the curriculum." He gestured towards the teacher on the stage. "They will provide the question paper for the written test soon."
Mikhail thanked him and looked around the auditorium.
’Are we going to take the test in the open?’
He wondered, and given the empty space he was more or less sure of it.
After waiting five more minutes, Mikhail looked up towards the observation pod above.
He felt like someone was gazing down at him from there.
’....What might that be?’
He wondered, tilting his head in confusion.
Just as he was lost in his thoughts, he felt a gaze of hatred on him.
Mikhail turned to his side where he found a young boy glaring at him.
It was Brandon Sanstan, the mayor’s son with snow white hair.
With a threatening smile on his face, he gestured as if slitting a throat with his hand.
Mikhail found it amusing and elbowed Kevin to look at him.
Kevin gave the boy with snow white hair a thorough look before waving his hand to grab his attention.
Then, he soundlessly mouthed "mom" and began to thrust his hips in the air, smacking his hands like he was doing something deplorable.
Brandon’s face immediately turned red like a burning hot rod. He was just about to walk towards Kevin when the sound of static echoed in the auditorium.
Professor Alan walked onto the stage with a microphone in his hand. Clearing his throat, he began.
"The representatives of all the institutes are already present here and with that we are starting the first screening: the written test."
Mikhail glanced towards the observation pod and guessed the college representatives were seated there.
"Now." Alan began. "I want all the students to make distance from one another."
Mikhail did as asked, walking back a few steps but not too far from Kevin.
Alan then nodded his head towards the teachers beside him.
One by one they moved and passed out the papers along with the answer sheets.
Mikhail took them and sat down on the ground without any problem.
He broke the seal of the question paper and began reading the questions.
Q1: Is war an inevitable part of human nature, or is it a preventable societal construct?
Q2: How many years did it take for the Aegon Kingdom to win the war with the Republic of Freena?
Q3: How does war impact a kingdom’s long-term economic development and poverty rates?
Q4: If you ever found a rift opening in a public place, what would you do?
Q5: How would you deal when coming in contact with a vampire or elf?
.....
....
.......
’This...’ Mikhail looked at the question paper with a blank expression. ’This is so fucking easy!’
He looked up and shifted his gaze towards Kevin who was scratching his head in confusion.
’I hope that dumb boar at least get a passing marks...’
Mikhail sighed softly, picked up the pen and began writing.
