Chapter 201: A favour

"Good morning, students. Welcome to the Bayside Academy 56th entrance examination. Our school offers a rigorous academic program, cutting-edge resources and a supportive community that celebrates individuality and promotes social impact. We, the staff of Bayside, would do everything for your growth. We wish you luck and success in this examination."

The image of a man in his late sixties appeared on the projection, his voice clear and sonorous as he bowed deeply before vanishing.

Ravi wanted to shake his head at all this fuss over the entrance examination. In his time, the only thing you had to submit was your birth certificate and yet not every student even had that. You could not compare though, his school was a down-down-throdded government school and this was a public school that even served the aspirants tea and cake before the examination.

The environment was making Arlen nervous and he did not want to eat anything on the table, except drinking a bit of water. Ravi drank the mint and lemon tea calmly, noting how the temperature of the tea remained hot no matter how much time had passed. They were not joking about cutting resources.

"You can listen to some music with your phone if you are feeling nervous."

Asher looked back at him, quiet for a few seconds, "I left the phone at home."

Ravi blinked in disbelief, "You left it at home. Why?"

"It is expensive. I did not want to lose it. Ravi, don’t be angry." His eyes moved to the left and right before brightening, "If you scold me right before my exams, I might..."

Ravi was speechless, "Just who taught this child how to be cunning because he definitely did not learn it from him. He took a deep breath, "Ash, the phone was for to contact me. Do you see how large this school is, let’s say you go somewhere else for your exam and parents are not allowed it, how can I call you? I bought it for you to use it not to keep it like it is a piece of painting. Okay?"

Asher nodded. It was just that the phone Ravi bought was just too expensive, making him uneasy. If you carried such a phone on the street, you would definitely be jumped. He looked around, in this kind of place, that phone would not make any big waves.

"Where on earth did you learn to be so conscientious with money?"

Asher looked at Ravi who just yesterday had told Malik to give him money for the pepper sauce that he had used for his noodles. He had even brought the receipt, telling the blind Malik to ’look’ at the evidence.

"Nowhere." He whispered, looking away from his guardian and drinking his juice. He felt that same familiar gaze and he looked around the hall before he caught the owner of the intense gaze.

It was a girl that looked like she was younger than him. She wore a light yellow dress and there was a blue ribbon on her blonde hair, her green eyes looked a little like Lana’s and she grinned at him, raising her hand to wave when she noticed that he was looking at her. She was the one who had frozen those children to take their spot.

Asher looked away, pretending that he could not see her.

"What are they doing? Don’t they know that some of us have somewhere to be this early morning? I have to sign a contract at Lipane by 10 a.m. this morning." The man who was sitting at a table nearest to Ravi complained loudly in the hall, earning some gazes on him.

As is prompted by the words, a faintly smiling staff member came out, "Good morning. We would begin with the health screening."

"Health screening? Is the Bayside Academy trying to discriminate between mutant students and ordinary students?" It was the woman who had paid people to take spots earlier in the queue.

The teacher was a young woman in her late thirties, her hair was tied in a bun and the smile on her face did not fade even with the association.

"No, Mrs Doploca, Bayside Academy has always been inclusive. Health screening is compulsory to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff on the campus. We have to ensure that the students are physically and mentally well enough to participate in the examination." She turned back to the students, went in, stood between the frames and waited for the system to finish scanning. Don’t leave until the light glows green. Queue up according to your number tag. When you are done, please take the door by your left for your first examination?"

"Ravi."

"Good luck."

Asher stood up and then turned, "If I..." He started but then stopped.

"What is it?"

"If I am the first, would you do something for me?"

Ravi chuckled, "Ash, do you feel like the pressure on you is too little so you want to add more? Whatever it is you wish, I would do it for you, whether you are the first or not. Just do your best, okay, we can go get ice cream afterwards."

Asher smiled, "I am thirteen, I am not a child."

Ravi ruffled his head, "Yes, you are a grown man now."

Asher laughed, "I still want something if I come first."

Ravi was quiet as he thought, but he suddenly understood, "Fine. If you come first, you get a favour."

Asher’s eyes brightened, "Okay. Bye, Ravi." Asher waved as he needed to the queue.

"Your brother?" A man came close to Ravi, sitting down just where Asher had been. The man was wearing a suave suit and held a cigarette in his mouth.

Ravi looked at him, "No."

"Your son. Where is his mother?" The man’s tone seemed to be indicating something, something that Ravi did not have the time or strength to get into.

Ravi wanted to snap back but thinking that this man’s child might be Asher’s classmate in the near future, he sighed, "Not here." novelbuddy.cσ๓

A look of frustration graced the man’s features before it disappeared, he stretched out his hand, "My name is Dalek Galli." He passed a black card to Ravi.
