Chapter 589: Chapter 587: The Truth about Amnesia (5)

The car flipped mid-air, tracing a black arc of light and shadow.

Her heart pounded against her ribs, threatening to break through her throat at any moment.

At this moment, the only thought in Vera Wave’s mind was—run, run, run!

She ran forward with all her might, pushing herself into a desperate sprint.

Meanwhile, inside the Dessert Shop, Kris Cooper heard the collision from outside. He turned his face towards the glass door, his almond-shaped eyes instantly widening.

"Vera!"

He screamed her name and, abandoning the wallet on the counter, lunged towards the door.

BOOM!

The car barely missed Vera, crashing heavily onto the ground. It slid further forward amidst scattering debris until it finally came to a halt against a wall.

Still, Vera sprinted forward, dashing up the stairs. When she saw the familiar figure, she charged into Kris Cooper’s arms.

"Kris, Kris!"

...

...

An engine roared, its sound especially grating in the quiet night.

She ran, she ran, she ran with all her might...

However, the car lights behind her were locked onto her like a relentless demon. Her shadow, cast on the road ahead, flickered erratically, looking somewhat eerie.

She stumbled across the road, rushed to the railing, and stopped to turn around.

The car’s headlights were blinding, making her eyes ache.

She couldn’t make out who was driving, but one thing was as clear as day—the car was charging straight at her.

Without a second thought, she turned, hastily clambered over the railing, and jumped.

She plummeted through mid-air. The wind whipped past, tugging at her clothes and long hair. A faint, foul, and somewhat fishy odor met her—the smell of the river water below.

SPLASH!

She plunged into the water.

Darkness surrounded her. Dirty water choked her throat, stung her eyes and nose. Even her face felt a gritty, painful sensation, and her skin stung all over.

...

...

"Vera, Vera... please say something, don’t scare me!"

Holding the terrified girl, who was pale with fear, Kris Cooper anxiously called her name.

Vera snapped back from her memories. She looked up at him, gradually regaining her composure.

"I... I’m fine!"

Seeing the fear in her eyes gradually replaced by a sense of calm, Kris Cooper exhaled in relief. He hugged her tightly again, patting her back to comfort her, then lifted his gaze to look down the stairs.

By now, the road beneath the stairs was jam-packed with cars. Kris Cooper’s car, parked by the roadside earlier, was now severely twisted out of shape. The passenger side, where Vera had been sitting, was especially crumpled against a lamppost, deeply indented.

Luckily, Vera had noticed that car in the side mirror; otherwise, she would surely have ended up crushed and mangled, just like the car.

Cars crowded the road; the blare of horns and screech of brakes filled the air.

Passersby and people from shops on both sides rushed out, looking towards the accident. Some began calling the police, while others pointed and exclaimed. A young woman, who had narrowly escaped being caught in the crash, now sobbed in her companion’s arms...

Someone rushed to the side of the overturned, offending car to check on the driver. They found a blood-covered face, the person’s head twisted at an unnatural angle to their neck. It was clear the neck was broken; there was no hope of saving them.

Noticing blood pooling from beneath the wrecked car, Kris Cooper gently turned the still-trembling Vera’s face into his shoulder.

"Close your eyes, don’t look at anything!"
