I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 256: Talk to your friend
Jane drank from her wine glass and glanced at Maxwell who had been silent the whole time while staring at the full glass in front of him.
’What is he staring at?’ she thought.
Maxwell was actually staring at Paige through the drink. He couldn’t look at her directly because he knew she was mad at him but he wanted to look at her so badly that he was doing it through his glass.
’Was it something I did?’ Maxwell wondered. ’Did I disobey by chance? Why?’ he clenched his glass tightly. ’Why did she look at me like that?’
"Mummy, I want to use the restroom." Romeo said to Paige and Paige smiled at him.
"Alright, let’s go upstairs to your room." She said and carried him up.
Jane watched as Maxwell fixed his eyes on Paige as she left. She could practically feel the pain in his eyes and out of frustration, he gulped down the entire glass and got up to leave.
’Where is he going now?’ she thought but wanted to mind her business. She bit her lip, contemplating and rubbing the rim of her glass with her index finger.
Yes, it was not her place to interfere. This was their marriage, so she should not interfere.
Yet, her conscience was pricking her. No matter how she saw it, her existence was what warranted this fight.
"Is something wrong?" Steve asked, seeing her become restless and she raised her head to him.
These days they had been spending a lot of time together and Jane could tell, contrary to how he looked indifferent on the outside, he was quite caring on the inside and knew what words to say to the other in a perplexing situation.
In a simple word, he was a great guy. And so, she could not understand why such a great guy was still single.
"Let’s say I unintentionally ruined my friend’s marriage just from being friends with him, do you think cutting ties would make things better?"
Steve looked at her for a while, analyzing her question, and then responded,
"First, do you have feelings for him?" He asked but Jane immediately shook her head.
"No. No way." She answered and a little hint of relief showed in Steve’s face but he cleared it with his glasses adjustment. It was almost like he asked that question for personal reasons but she didn’t know that.
"Do the couple have any trust issues? Like, have you noticed that they are always suspicious of each other?" He asked but Jane shook her head.
"Nope. Those two have such solid trust in each other and that’s why they’re only having problems now, after so long."
’She cares so much. It must be a long-time friend.’ Steve thought.
"Next, do you feel guilty or responsible for what’s going on?" He asked and she answered,
"Both?"
"Then, I advise you not to cut ties. Though you can’t really fix his marriage with any of your actions, that’s entirely up to him, you can help from the side."
"How?"
"Talk to your friend. He may not know what he’s doing wrong and would definitely not know the reason behind his falling marriage. As a girl, you should be able to tell what his wife might be feeling, depending on your interactions with her husband. Set some boundaries and make it clear to your friend, so he doesn’t feel lost. Cutting ties..." He twirled his glass. "...will only deplete your friend’s motivation."
He explained and Jane listened silently. She understood most of it but that last part... How would cutting ties deplete his motivation?
"You’re probably wondering how, right?" He said and she flinched. Gosh, he was such a good mind reader. "Think about it." He put down his wine glass. "If his marriage starts breaking and the person whom he felt would have his back, as well as advice him, suddenly cut ties with him, how will he feel?"
"Abandoned." I muttered and looked away. That was such a horrible feeling.
"Correct." He said and suddenly went silent, staring at Jane’s face while Jane thought of the next thing to do.
It would be to talk to Maxwell, that was for sure, because apparently, he didn’t know why Paige was like that and he didn’t know what ’boundaries’ meant either.
"You’re a genius, Steve." Jane said, turning her face to him and Steve instinctively looked away. "I’ll go talk to him. The sooner the better, right?"
"Yes, the sooner the better." He said, "But are you leaving now?"
His question was unheard as Jane had rushed out of there. She even forgot to thank him for the advice and he gave out a little sigh. She would probably say it when they meet at the facility later. She was just that type of person.
He rubbed the back of his neck. This feeling was rather new but it was strange how he already knew what it was.
The sweetness at the tip of his tongue, the light feeling in his mind, and the gentle thumping of his heart when talking to her... Even a four-year-old would know that those were the signs of love.
It’s just that... He never thought he’d actually come to like anyone. He planned to stay single for as long as possible and not be hindered by any feelings or attachment to the world. However, he already cracked into that plan when he agreed to donate his sperm to have a child of his own.
And now he was cracking that plan even more by falling for his colleague. A loud, jovial, and sentimental person who has quite a bit of an anger issue. He chuckled.
Though he had no plan of confessing anytime soon, especially knowing she just got out of a rough patch, breaking up with her fiance and all.
He sighed. At least he’d get to meet her every day, so he had no problem. Would there really be a difference if he confessed? Forget it. Seeing her every day was already worth it.
So he thought. But just as the greed of liking someone crept into his heart, the greed of wanting to do more with them would soon overshadow his tight-enclosed heart.
Jane hurried upstairs, only to find Maxwell confronting Paige. She couldn’t hear what they were saying but as she got closer, she seemed to hear words from Paige. She said,
"I can’t own your heart, Max. And though I don’t know if what we’ve been doing so far is the truth or just a facade we put up to fool ourselves, I know that the heart can’t lie, and right now..." She poked his chest. "Your heart is probably telling you something completely different from what it’s been telling you all these years we’ve been together." She said,
What did that even mean? Jane was as confused as Maxwell.
"Mommy, I’m done." Romeo yelled from inside and Paige turned away from Maxwell but he grabbed her hand and went down on his knees, begging.
