Chapter 250: Do you like spending time with Jane?

Maxwell went to the room and met Paige undressing. He got closer and wanted to help her undo her bra buckle but she suddenly moved away and gave him a single game before heading for the bathroom.

"I’ll have a quick bath and come out. There are still a lot of things I have to do." She said and closed the door.

Maxwell took it the way she said it but there was something about how she avoided him that he couldn’t understand.

"I might be overthinking things." He muttered while looking at his hand and clenched it. "Yes, that’s just it. My wifey must be exhausted from overseeing all the preparations and just wants everything to be over and done so we can be alone again."

Paige entered the bathroom, rested her back on the door, and sighed. She didn’t want to put meaning into Maxwell’s interaction with Jane but she couldn’t stop herself from feeling uneasy.

She felt like his feelings were swaying over to another side.

She took her bath and got out, telling Maxwell to go out to take his bath as well.

He didn’t notice anything too strange so he went to take his bath quickly and got out.

When he got out of the bathroom, he found Paige staring blankly at the mirror

"Wifey, what’s wrong?" He asked and she turned away from the mirror to face him.

His impeccable appearance while he walked out of the bathroom was great, as always. Any lady would fall for this. Any lady at all.

Maxwell knew not to come out of the bathroom till he was fully dry. It was a habit he formed after Paige told him she didn’t like getting the floor of the room wet after they took their baths.

He did everything for her, everything she wanted, and he still was. It was like nothing had changed about them but there were so many changes.

"Maxwell," Paige called. "...are you happy?" She suddenly asked and Maxwell tilted his head.

"Of course." He approached her and took her hand, caressed it against his cheek, and smiled. "You’re here with me, why won’t I be happy?"

Paige went silent and pursed her lips.

"Wifey, is something bothering you?" He asked and touched her face, his eyes suddenly turning cold. "Who’s the bastard that’s making you think?"

"It’s nothing." Paige said and gently pushed his hand away from her face.

He looked at his hand. Why did she do that?

"Maxwell, do you find Jane fun to be with?" She asked out of the blue and oblivious to her reason for asking, he answered with a smiling face.

"Yes. I really like playing with her. She tries to run but I just find it cute and want to pester her more." Paige’s heart wrenched as she heard this.

She grabbed her arm tight. Maxwell was smiling because of another woman. What could she do now that he had grown attached to her?

"It’s my fault." She said,

It was the first time she had given him instructions to follow someone around without resentment or any hostile relations, so it was inevitable that he would get attached.

She was jealous. She was unsatisfied but she caused this.

She knew he had a mental illness but she had been so confident that his obsession would be for her and her alone. She never knew he would grow fond of another, aside from her.

All she ever really wanted was for him to have someone he could talk to normally. Someone he could hold a proper conversation with, without putting a knife against their throat.

She never really cared about the gender of the other person, as long as he could live like a normal person, hang out with another like a normal person, and talk about it with her like others do in their relationship. Get excited and exchange discussions about their day, who they hung out with, and the likes.

It was always her doing the talking because he spent time with no one but her so she wished he would find someone. But now, she is starting to get anxious. She was starting to regret it.

Maxwell... Wasn’t a normal person. Whoever he gets attached to would be as a result of some sort of fond feelings and attachment... just like how he felt for her.

If he ended up cheating on her because he came to like another human for the first time because he was feeling a little like a normal human, who could she blame?

But... was it possible for him to like Jane more than her?

She pursed her lips. That wasn’t it. That shouldn’t be what she should be thinking. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

First, had she really seen him as her husband? All along, she had been treating him as a tool, someone whom she could benefit from, and she was just realizing it. She called him over when she needed an impossible job done and she complimented him, telling him he did a great job just to appease his little craving and feel good about her.

Though she could affirm that she had feelings for him, who was he in her eyes? Her life partner whom she could rely on whenever things got tough or her husband that she loved?

There was a difference in those two lines. In a marriage, those two were needed but the way she saw the first... it wasn’t as simple as relying on your life partner.

"Wifey?" Maxwell tried to hold her hand but she subconsciously took her hand back to both their surprise.

"Ah." She exclaimed and rubbed her hand. She was scared. If all her speculations were correct then what they have been doing for over four years... It’s been nothing but a sweet lie to both of them. "I... I’ll go out first."

She said and got up. Her thoughts were in shambles so she couldn’t bring herself to speak to him. She was scared she would lose herself to her emotions and say unnecessary things.

For the time being, it was better to watch from the side and if it looked like Maxwell would replace her with Jane, then she would let go naturally.

"Hurry up a bit. The guests have started arriving."

Maxwell watched her as she left. He didn’t know why but he felt he had done something really wrong and that she was mad at him.

But... he looked at his hand... he couldn’t tell what it was. Was it because he had been honest and said he liked spending time with Jane? Why was she angry? Would she abandon him because of this? Would he come to hate her? Why?

He was confused.

Alexa pressed her hand on her head. She heard everything Jane had to say and was feeling extremely bad.

So many risks were taken while she was lying on the hospital bed. So many risks. And so many other things too. She looked up at Jane who was looking as guilty as ever and averting her eyes.

Alexa sighed and asked,

"Jane, what else are you not telling me?"
