Hunter of Mysterious Creature-Chapter 407 - 47: Radio_2
"Is there something playing on the radio?" Yin Xiang cautiously asked.
"No sound." Ling Xiao immediately replied, "Not even static."
"Not even static... then how do you know the radio is on?" Yin Xiang was puzzled.
"The power indicator is on." Ling Xiao said.
"Maybe the volume’s turned all the way down... Bring the radio here and let me take a look." Yin Xiang said.
"Alright."
Ling Xiao quickly jumped down from the ladder, holding a palm-sized silver radio.
Yin Xiang took the radio. It was a "Diamond" brand radio, quite old-fashioned—he remembered seeing a vintage "Diamond" radio at his grandmother’s house in the countryside, sitting on the table in the living room.
That thing, about the size of a brick, was almost as old as his grandma... Yin Xiang once thought this brand was extinct, but it turned out it was still around.
This was a portable radio, with a built-in antenna, a type-C charging port, and it could even connect to Bluetooth headphones... definitely a recently made model.
"There’s really no sound..." Yin Xiang fiddled with it, noticing the volume was normal, not connected to any Bluetooth headphones, and the radio was operational... But the small LCD screen showed the frequency jumping constantly, numbers flashing around like gibberish.
"The radio might be broken?" Yin Xiang instinctively tapped the back of the radio.
The erratic frequency suddenly stabilized, and the screen displayed 555.5MHz—this made Yin Xiang pause. He remembered the FM range for most regions in the Xiazhou Federation being between 87-108MHz, so what was this 555?
Could the new radio transcend preset frequency limits? Such powerful functionality?
With a slight modification, could it be used to eavesdrop on military radio?
While Yin Xiang was lost in thought, a low sobbing sound suddenly emanated from the radio.
"Whoa!"
Startled, Yin Xiang let the radio slip from his grasp; luckily, Ling Xiao swiftly caught it, averting its potential shattering fate.
"Mr. Ding! Mr. Ding, come over here! I found something!" Yin Xiang, heart pounding, hurriedly pressed the talk button and shouted.
Half a minute later, Ding Chao rushed to the unloading area with several field agents.
"Is this the radio you were talking about?" Ding Chao examined the radio. "You mean, if you tap it, it will emit sobbing sounds?"
"Yes!" Yin Xiang nodded vigorously. "That crying... it was chilling. The goosebumps on my neck and back still haven’t gone away."
"Can you distinguish whether it’s a man’s or woman’s sobbing, an adult’s or a child’s?" Ding Chao asked again.
"Couldn’t tell."
By this time, the radio had returned to its previous state of frequency jumping. Ding Chao cast a skeptical glance at Yin Xiang, then tried tapping the back of the radio himself.
The numbers on the screen stabilized again, this time at 222.2MHz.
"Hehehe... Hahaha... Hohoho..." A series of sinister laughter drifted from the radio to everyone’s ears.
"Damn, it changed from crying to laughter this time." Yin Xiang suddenly cursed, "This damn laughter is even creepier than the crying."
"Get the testing equipment." Ding Chao pulled out a specimen bag, carefully placing the radio inside. "Let’s test if this radio is an ominous object."
The testing process took less than two minutes, and they quickly had the answer—the radio itself wasn’t an ominous object, but the magnetic field in the factory area seemed to be distorted by some unknown force, which caused the radio’s frequency modulation to malfunction, receiving those eerie sounds of laughter and sobbing.
"This definitely has something to do with ominous objects." Yin Xiang said firmly. "Even with a magnetic anomaly, it shouldn’t distort static into crying and laughter! You all heard it, right? That’s definitely laughter! And it changed several times!"
The field agents who followed couldn’t help but feel a chill down their spines, involuntarily nodding.
"Report to the command center immediately!" Ding Chao nodded and then seemed to suddenly think of something. He picked up another communicator and said, "Mr. Geng, this is Ding Chao. You should have brought high-power military radios, right?"
"Good, can you please adjust the radio to 222.2MHz and 555.5MHz?" Ding Chao added.
Then followed a prolonged silence.
"Mr. Ding, what’s with those eerie laughs and cries? I need your explanation." Mr. Geng’s voice came through the communicator. Standing next to Ding Chao, Yin Xiang could tell Mr. Geng’s breathing was a bit irregular, his speech was fast, seemingly trying to cover some emotion—clearly, he was just as scared by those strange sounds.
"We’re also unsure of the source and meaning of these sounds." Ding Chao replied. "My team found a malfunctioning radio in the unloading zone truck. When we tap the radio, it locks onto a frequency... you guessed it right, it’s 222.2MHz and 555.5MHz... According to our judgment, the ominous object attacking Factory 105 might have altered the area’s magnetic field, causing the radio to malfunction."
"Mr. Ding, I have an idea." Yin Xiang suddenly spoke.
"Go ahead." Ding Chao nodded at him.
"Look at these two frequencies, one is 222.2, the other is 555.5... Do you notice any similarities between them?" 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
"Constructed from the same digit?"
"Exactly... Given that, have them try military radio on frequencies like 111.1, 333.3, and see if we can hear something different." Yin Xiang suggested.
"Alright, I’ll have them try it now, because I also need them to record all these audio files and send them back to the command center to see if they can analyze them..."
However, minutes later, bad news came from Mr. Geng.
They tried several other special frequencies with military radio and did indeed hear some abnormal sounds—111.1 had indistinguishable murmurs; 333.3 was intermittent breaths; 444.4 was some strange friction noise... But when soldiers recorded these sounds to send back to the command center, they found those audio files, without exception, were all corrupted during transmission.
"All corrupted... Could it be affected by something besides the magnetic field?" Ding Chao pondered aloud, "Mr. Geng, perhaps you could try playing the radio’s weird sounds directly during communications with the command center to see if they can record them."
"You think I didn’t consider that sooner?" Mr. Geng snapped, "When the audio files repeatedly failed during transmission, I tried this method—doesn’t work, it’s all static... The command center can barely hear my voice, but none of those crying, laughing whispering sounds from the radio can be heard!"
"...By the way, when you play the recorded audio files directly from the device, is everything normal?" Ding Chao asked.
"Yeah, it’s fine."
"Then don’t use the network for transfer; just have the recorded devices brought back by drone." Ding Chao said. "Though it’ll take more time, at least it guarantees no interference during transmission."
