HUNTED-Chapter 385: The Lost Hybrid (2)
Davian returned to the packhouse, his stride quick and confident, as he headed in the direction of Aila’s office. It was at this time that she left her office free for anyone to walk into from 11am to 1pm.
It was like a drop-in session for anyone who had issues within the pack to come and find her. As the Luna, it was her responsibility to make sure everyone was happy and comfortable, as well as the usual protection and best interests of the pack. While it was the Alpha’s job to protect the pack, have their best interests at heart and make sure everyone fell in line.
Though Davian knew Aila and Damon weren’t the most traditional anyway.
This was a good way for pack members to complain to Aila, though. No wonder she strictly kept it to a two-hour session for anyone to drop in. It must be a headache, especially if the issue was something ridiculous. Davian had heard a few conversations in passing. Some of them really did act like preschoolers.
Davian stopped just outside her door. Nobody was waiting in the hallway, but he did hear a woman speaking to her in the office. He waited and listened to Aila, solving an issue regarding the number of unmated werewolves in the pack.
The pack was huge, and so those unmated seemed like a vast majority, but in fact, it was only about 200 hundred out of the growing 1200 pack members.
"I will arrange something for those unmated to have holidays where they can find their mates. Four times a year should be enough, ten days off. That’s forty days you have each year to find your mate."
Davian’s eyebrows rose. That was more than most people had for time off work.
"Wow, really!?" The other she-wolf in the office exclaimed.
"Of course. This is about finding your mate. It’s special. Some leave it to chance, but if there are others like you wanting to roam further, then so be it," Aila replied politely. "I want you to get a list together of everyone who is unmated and wants to search for their mate. When that is done, come back to me, and I will work on this in the meantime."
The woman squealed in excitement. "Thank you so much! You’re the best!"
The sound of footsteps grew louder before the door swung open, and the she-wolf speaking to Aila stepped outside. She outright stopped in her tracks once she saw Davian leaning against the wall. Appreciation flashed across her features before she blushed and rushed out of the way.
Davian ignored her lingering stare as he walked inside the office and closed the door behind him.
"Hey," Aila sounded surprised, looking up after hearing his approaching footsteps while she slumped down behind her desk and started to rearrange some papers into a neater pile.
Davian stared for a moment. Aila was the spitting image of his mother, but her soft eyes, voice and nature always snapped him out of the momentary daze he seemed to have when greeting Aila. She looked the part of a Luna, an Alpha Queen in her pristine office, working hard.
No, Aila didn’t ’look the part’. She WAS a Luna and Alpha Queen. It looked like work was already starting to pile up. It reminded him of his father working away in the office Damon had refurbished.
"Everything okay?" Aila asked after he hadn’t replied and merely watched her like some strange creep.
Though Aila was good with reading the room. It was why she did so well with not telling him everything at Cassius’ castle. She knew Davian had no choice but to report to Cassius at the time.
"I’m leaving," he bluntly announced, making Aila pause the cup of coffee going to her lips. "I thought I’d let you know."
Aila put her cup down and slowly stood, watching him, her expression wary. "Is it weird being here?"
Davian looked away and started strolling towards the table meant for pack leaders and like before the wedding, the conference for the newly put together W.S.H.O.
"It’s partly that. But I know things are just getting started here.." His back was to her now as he slowly moved to the fireplace far across the room from her desk. "I don’t want to be a part of the politics. I don’t want to be a part of any of it. I’m sick of it all."
Davian looked back at the Luna when she remained quiet. Aila was nodding her head in acceptance. "I understand. You will always have a place here. It’s your home before its mine-"
"No. This is yours now. It has a lot of blood-stained walls and memories, but you’ve refurbished it and made it your own. This is your place. Your throne. Your people." Davian knew he didn’t need to reiterate that, but it was just in case she began doubting herself.
"I am a guest now. A nomad."
He quite liked the sound of that.
"Will you visit?" Aila asked; she was standing not far from him now, hands clasped together as she read his face. Something in his face must have made her worried. He did look tired for someone who didn’t age.
"I don’t know when I will, though," Davian replied honestly. "I’ll stay in touch?"

He sounded a little awkward then. It had been a while since he had someone who cared for him and wanted to see him.
"I have your number! You can’t get rid of me so easily, Mr!" Aila put her hands on her hips. "I’ll annoy you until you have to reply. I want to know that you’re doing okay. You’re like.. a big brother..
or an uncle I adopted."
Davian’s eyebrows rose at that with a soft chuckle before he shook his head in disbelief. "That sounds crazy even to my ears."
He didn’t disregard it, though. He looked at Aila as a niece, someone to protect. She was nothing like his mother.
Aila smiled. "I know."
Sighing, she stepped forwards and forced him into a hug. "I will miss you, ya know. Remember to say goodbye to the boys."
’The boys’ were Aldric and Harry, and they sounded more like they were her children. Though the pack really were like her children, she was its mother, looking over and protecting her young.
"I will. Thanks for everything."
Davian left the room without turning back. He said his goodbyes to Damon and ’the boys’, making it quick, though they made sure to get each other’s numbers.
Davian Cross left the Silver Crescent pack a free man and a hybrid.
Nobody outside the inner circle of the Aila Cross knew who the handsome man was, but none could ever forget his face. Especially when that man returned years later as the ’Godfather’ of one of the Alpha King and Queen’s children.
