Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 551: Story : The Mausoleum’s Curse
The rain intensified, pelting the shattered remains of the cemetery as ZETU regrouped near the imposing mausoleum. Lightning forked across the sky, illuminating the grotesque carvings of screaming faces etched into the mausoleum's cracked stone walls. From its shadowed entrance, a faint, sickly green glow pulsed in rhythm with the thunder, as if beckoning the team deeper into the abyss.
"This glow is the same as the lantern," Ethan "Brain" O'Connor said over the comms, his voice tinged with concern. "If it's resonating like that, there's something even more dangerous inside."
Captain Marcus Kane gripped his shotgun tighter, his steely eyes locked on the mausoleum. "Huntress, Quick Shot, take point. Shield and Blaze, hold the perimeter. Brain, I need eyes on whatever is in there."
"I'm sending in a drone," Ethan replied. Seconds later, a small, buzzing drone zipped through the rain, entering the mausoleum's dark entrance. The team watched its feed on their wrist monitors. The grainy image revealed rows of decayed corpses lining the walls, their skeletal remains adorned with tattered ceremonial robes. At the end of the long hallway stood an altar, pulsating with the green glow.
"What is that?" Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett asked, her sniper rifle trained on the entrance.
Ethan's voice cracked with urgency. "It's an energy source—looks ancient. The readings are unstable, and it's connected to the bodies in the walls. This might be powering more than just the lantern. If we don't destroy it, it could reanimate every corpse in this area."
"Then we go in, fast and clean," Kane ordered.
As the team moved toward the mausoleum, a sudden, guttural roar erupted from behind. From the mud and shadows, more undead surged forth, their glowing eyes fixated on ZETU.
"Blaze, light it up!" Kane barked.
Jenna "Blaze" Hart spun on her heels, unleashing a jet of fire that engulfed the first wave of zombies. Derek "Shield" Coleman stepped forward, using his riot shield to block the remaining attackers, allowing Jenna to incinerate them with precision.
Inside the mausoleum, Marcus and Lila "Huntress" Navarro navigated the narrow corridor, their weapons trained on the glowing altar ahead. The oppressive air was thick with the stench of decay.
The corpses lining the walls began to stir. Skeletal hands twitched, and hollow eyes glowed green as they turned toward the intruders.
"Captain, we've got company!" Lila shouted, firing at the nearest corpse as it lurched toward her.
"Keep moving!" Kane roared, blasting through the reanimated skeletons with his shotgun. They reached the altar, where the green energy source pulsed ominously.
Lila pulled an explosive charge from her belt. "Cover me!"
Kane laid down suppressive fire as more skeletons emerged from the walls. Lila secured the charge to the altar, her fingers trembling as the glowing energy intensified.
"Charge set! Let's move!" she yelled.
They sprinted back down the corridor, the skeletons closing in as the timer ticked down.
Outside, the explosion rocked the ground, sending green energy arcing into the stormy sky. The mausoleum crumbled, and the remaining zombies collapsed lifelessly into the mud.
As the team caught their breath, Kane looked at the horizon. "Brain, tell me we're done here."

Ethan's reply was grim. "Not yet, Captain. The energy signature... it's spreading."
Kane's jaw tightened. "Then we move. This fight isn't over."
