Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 550: Story : The Thunderous Awakening
The storm battered the crumbling cemetery as ZETU approached the heart of the chaos. Rain cascaded from the heavens, turning the earth into thick mud that clung to their boots. Lightning flashed across the darkened sky, illuminating a grotesque scene: zombies clawing their way out of drenched graves, their rotted flesh glistening under the deluge.
Captain Marcus Kane raised a clenched fist, signaling his team to halt. The grotesque figure in the distance—a crawling corpse cloaked in tattered black robes—dragged itself toward a weathered tombstone, its skeletal hand clutching a lantern radiating eerie blue light.
"That thing's our target," Kane growled into his comms, his shotgun steady.
Lila "Huntress" Navarro scanned the scene with her binoculars from her elevated position. "It's not alone. I've got eyes on at least fifty walkers closing in from all directions. That lantern... it's like a beacon."
Ethan "Brain" O'Connor's voice crackled in over the comms. "That's no ordinary lantern. The energy readings are off the charts—it's drawing the dead to it. If we don't shut it down, this entire area will be swarming in minutes."

"Shield and Blaze, form a perimeter," Kane barked. "Quick Shot, cover Huntress from above. Huntress, you're with me. We're taking out that lantern."
Jenna "Blaze" Hart ignited her flamethrower with a satisfying roar, her flames casting flickering shadows against the gravestones. "This cemetery's about to get a lot less crowded," she said with a smirk, stepping forward to incinerate a wave of advancing undead.
Derek "Shield" Coleman held the line, his massive riot shield bracing against the horde. Each blow from the clawing zombies echoed through the storm, but he stood firm, bashing any that got too close with his reinforced baton.
Kane and Navarro pushed forward, navigating the uneven ground. Each step was treacherous, with mud threatening to pull them down. The crawling corpse raised its lantern, its light intensifying as the surrounding zombies howled with renewed vigor.
"Watch your six, Captain!" Navarro shouted, spinning to take down a lunging zombie with a clean shot to the head.
"I'm fine. Focus on that lantern," Kane replied, blasting another creature that had emerged from the sodden ground.
As they approached the figure, the ground beneath them erupted. A massive zombie, twice the size of the others, clawed its way out of a grave, its eyes glowing with the same blue hue as the lantern.
"Big one incoming!" Navarro yelled.
Kane switched to incendiary rounds. "We take it down together. Aim for the head."
Navarro's pistols and Kane's shotgun roared in unison, their shots tearing through the beast's rotting flesh. It staggered, then fell with a deafening crash.
Navarro sprinted forward, seizing the moment to snatch the lantern from the crawling corpse's grasp. It let out an unearthly wail as she smashed the glowing object against the nearest tombstone.
The light faded instantly, and the remaining zombies froze before collapsing into lifeless heaps.
"It's done," Kane said, lowering his shotgun. But as the thunder rolled, his eyes turned toward the looming mausoleum. A faint glow emanated from within.
"This isn't over," Navarro muttered.
