Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 498 : Story 498: Inferno’s Ascent
The roar of flames was deafening, a cacophony of destruction as the wildfire tore through the forest. The air was thick with smoke, ash falling like snow, and the horizon glowed an ominous red. Above it all, the unmistakable thrum of helicopter blades sliced through the chaos.
"Extraction is on its way," Rook said, his voice strained but steady as he relayed the update to the team over the comms. "ETA: five minutes. We hold this position until then."
The team had taken refuge on a rocky outcrop that offered a precarious vantage point above the flames. It wasn't ideal, but it was their only option. The forest below was a fiery hellscape, and the enemy forces they had been evading were closing in fast.
Ghost materialized from the shadows, his movements almost spectral against the flickering light. "They're coming," he said. "Three groups, southeast. We've got two minutes before they're on top of us."
Shadow was already in position, her sniper rifle trained on the treeline. "I'll thin them out," she said, her voice calm despite the dire circumstances.
"Make every shot count," Rook replied. He turned to Bulwark, who was busy rigging explosives along the narrow path leading up to their position. "We'll give them a warm welcome if they get too close."
Viper crouched nearby, her twin blades gleaming in the firelight. "I'm ready to go up close and personal," she said with a smirk, though the tension in her voice was unmistakable.
"Not yet," Rook said firmly. "We hold the line until that chopper gets here. No heroics."
The first wave of enemies emerged from the treeline, their silhouettes stark against the flames. Shadow fired, and one fell instantly. Another shot rang out, then another, each one finding its mark.

"They're splitting up!" Shadow warned. "Trying to flank us."
Rook cursed under his breath. "Ghost, cover the left. Bulwark, detonate on my signal. Viper, stay close."
The firefight intensified, bullets zipping through the smoke as the enemy pressed their advance. Ghost moved like a wraith, taking out targets with surgical precision. Bulwark triggered the explosives, and the resulting blast sent a shockwave through the forest, halting the enemy's momentum.
Above the chaos, the helicopter finally came into view, its spotlight cutting through the smoke. "Extraction team here," the pilot's voice crackled over the comms. "We see you. Hold tight."
"About time," Viper muttered, but her relief was short-lived as a missile streaked toward the chopper, narrowly missing it.
"Anti-air!" Rook shouted. "They've got launchers!"
The helicopter swerved, dumping its water payload onto the flames in a desperate attempt to stabilize.
"We need to secure that bird!" Rook ordered. "Bulwark, lay down suppressive fire! Shadow, take out those launchers!"
The team sprang into action, their movements synchronized despite the chaos. Shadow's shots took out two of the launchers, while Bulwark's heavy fire forced the remaining enemies to retreat.
The helicopter hovered lower, its side door open. "Go, go, go!" Rook yelled, ushering the team toward their escape.
As the last of them clambered aboard, the helicopter rose, leaving the inferno behind. But Rook's gaze remained fixed on the horizon, where a dark plume of smoke marked their next and final destination.
"We're not done yet," he said grimly. "One last mission."
