Chapter 731: Medical parole

The man nodded, "Mm."

Perhaps her worry was too evident in her eyes, Edward Stephens lowered his head and gently kissed her lips, soothing her, "I’m fine."

Since he chose to send him to prison, he wouldn’t waver.

Daisy Ginger said nothing, merely wrapping her arms around his waist, burying her face in his embrace.

How could he be fine?

After all, that was Robert Stephens.

Edward Stephens’ half-brother. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

The man who had raised and educated him since childhood.

For the two brothers to come to such a life-or-death situation, how could everything be fine?

And for Edward Stephens to go to such lengths, perhaps some of it was for her sake.

She naturally believed Robert Stephens deserved it, but...

Was Edward Stephens truly not upset in his heart?

Daisy Ginger sighed softly in her heart.

*

Early the next morning, before Daisy Ginger woke up, the man had already gotten up quietly.

After washing up in the bathroom and changing his clothes, he leaned down and kissed Daisy Ginger’s face, saying softly, "I’m heading out first."

Daisy Ginger opened her eyes, smiled at him, cupped his face in her hands and kissed his lips, her voice still hoarse from sleep, "Be careful on the road."

"Mm."

After a moment of tender intimacy, the man finally left.

After Edward Stephens left, Daisy Ginger slept a little longer.

Perhaps out of worry for Edward Stephens, her sleep was restless. She dozed fitfully for half an hour before getting up to check stocks on her phone.

The stock gains made her mood slightly better.

She went downstairs to have breakfast with Erin, who asked curiously, "Where’s Dad?"

"Dad went out." Daisy Ginger fed him a small dumpling, "He’ll probably be back around noon."

"Oh..." Erin nodded, his right cheek puffed up as he earnestly resumed eating breakfast.

Daisy Ginger went out for a jog along the road.

The Stephens family estate was unusually quiet today; even the servants seemed to have realized the former master of the estate had left, speaking in hushed tones.

Edward Stephens didn’t return by noon.

After having lunch with Erin, Daisy Ginger sat on the sofa, glancing at the silent door, feeling a faint unease.

Could something have gone wrong at Robert Stephens’ trial?

She wanted to call Edward Stephens to check the situation but was afraid to disturb him.

Just when she was feeling anxious, Ryan Smith arrived, dusty and travel-worn.

Daisy Ginger abruptly stood up from the sofa, and heard Ryan say, "Robert Stephens is critically ill, he’s being resuscitated in the hospital now."

Daisy Ginger softly exclaimed, "Ah," and instinctively asked, "Is Edward... alright?"

"Edward is at the hospital too." Ryan said, "He asked me to come tell you not to worry."

Daisy Ginger walked over, grabbed a coat, and hastily put it on, "Take me to the hospital."

"Mom!"

Erin heard the commotion and ran down from the study upstairs. Daisy Ginger hugged her child, kissed him, "Mom’s going out for a while. Be good, and I’ll be back soon."

Erin nodded obediently. Only then did Daisy Ginger feel reassured enough to leave quickly with Ryan.

"What happened?"

As soon as she got in the car, Daisy Ginger couldn’t help but ask.

"Isn’t the trial today? How did he end up critically ill?"

"The trial was on. But Edward and I waited a long time without seeing anyone come out, then suddenly got a notification that Robert Stephens had vomited blood and passed out inside, so was sent to the hospital. Had to adjourn the trial."

Daisy Ginger muttered, "Isn’t it possible they’ll apply for medical parole now?"

Ryan tutted lightly, "Who knows."

Without knowing the specifics, Daisy Ginger couldn’t say much more. When they reached the designated hospital where Robert Stephens was being resuscitated, they found it filled with luxury cars. The entire private hospital had been booked by the Stephens family, restricting outsider access.

Ryan showed his credentials and was finally allowed entry by the police.

Outside the emergency room, Daisy Ginger saw many relatives of the Stephens family. In the innermost part of the emergency room, she saw Edward Stephens leaning against the wall, eyes closed, his face slightly pale.

Seeing him like this, Daisy Ginger’s heart skipped a beat, and she hurried over, grasping the man’s cold fingers.

The man sensed the touch, slowly opened his eyes, gave her a somewhat weak smile, "What are you doing here?"

Daisy Ginger recalled he had been fine when he left in the morning, and now he looked like a wilting plant hit by frost, which made her heart ache. She couldn’t help but ask, "What’s wrong with you?"

Edward Stephens rested his forehead lightly on Daisy Ginger’s shoulder, "He’s about to die."

Daisy Ginger was taken aback.

"Multiple organ failure," he said, "it’s the sequelae of the car accident."

In other words, even if Edward Stephens did nothing, Robert Stephens wouldn’t live much longer.

Daisy Ginger hadn’t expected this. She embraced Edward Stephens, at a loss for words.

"I just wanted him to go to prison," he said in a low voice, "I didn’t want him to die."

"I know," Daisy Ginger said, "I know."

"..." The man fell silent, simply gripping her tightly, saying nothing more.

Daisy Ginger’s mind was a chaotic mess too, unsure of how to comfort him. No matter how much she detested Robert Stephens, that man was still Edward Stephens’s brother. He had already done so much for her; she couldn’t forbid him from grieving as well.

The man held her for a whole half hour.

At last, when he seemed to have gathered himself, he slowly released her.

Only when he looked up, his eyes were red.

Daisy Ginger grasped his cold hand, gently asking him, "Are you okay?"

He shook his head.

The air around was heavy with tension. Everyone in the Stephens family harbored their own schemes. Edward Stephens had only just taken over Robert Stephens’s position. Since he refused to let them control him, many were resentful and hoped to pull Robert Stephens out of prison.

Now with Robert Stephens’s sudden critical illness, perhaps there would be a chance for medical parole. Then they could establish power with Robert Stephens outside, challenging Edward Stephens. That was not impossible.

The surgery was going to take a long time; Daisy Ginger noticed the man’s face becoming more and more ashen and felt alarmed. "What’s going on with you?"

"Stomach hurts a bit."

Daisy Ginger rubbed his stomach, seeing his face getting even paler, and ignoring his objections, she forcibly took him to get checked at the hospital.

The checkup results came back quickly, indicating stomach spasms induced by agitation.

The doctor prescribed some gastric and pain relief medication. Seeing he still wanted to return to the surgery room, Daisy Ginger held him back, "Eat something first."

The man sighed lightly, "Daisy, he’s my brother."

Daisy Ginger looked at him with teary eyes, "And you’re the father of my child. What would I and Erin do if you collapse?"

Edward Stephens couldn’t argue with her. Yielding to her, he went downstairs, drank a cup of warm milk, took the medication, then held her hand as they returned to the hospital.
