Chapter 23: Chapter 23: No Fooling Around in Public

Ethan Sinclair had a wonderful scent of perfume, which Kiana Sutton had secretly researched before. It was from a niche perfume brand from F-Nation.

The top notes were lemon and neroli, fresh, cheerful, and charming. Gradually, a tea fragrance emerged, like dampened tea leaves, bringing a momentary calmness. The base notes were a perfect blend of woody and tobacco scents, an elusive aroma that ambushed the senses.

Kiana Sutton’s heart was racing, and her cheeks quickly flushed.

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith are not easily fooled. Don’t make them feel like we’re acting. You’ve dated before and should know what couples in love do, right?"

Kiana pouted. Of course, she knew!

She had always secretly loved only him, who else would she date?

But even if she’s never eaten pork, she has seen pigs run. Isn’t it just showing affection? Who can’t do that!

Moreover, Ethan said it was acting, so whatever she does to him is to help secure the collaboration.

With that thought, Kiana held Ethan’s handsome face and quickly pressed a kiss onto his lips.

Ethan’s body stiffened, about to get angry, but he caught sight of Mr. and Mrs. Smith entering, and a dark gleam flashed in his eyes. He wrapped his arm around Kiana’s slender waist and deepened the kiss.

The kiss didn’t last long before Ethan released Kiana. He smiled, tucking her fallen hair behind her ear, and said in a deep, sexy voice full of affection, "Alright, no fooling around in public."

Before they got married, Kiana often saw Ethan smile. When he smiled, there was a dimple on his right cheek, dispelling his cold demeanor and giving a cozy spring breeze feeling.

After marriage, Kiana saw Ethan smile too, but it was mostly a sneer or a mocking smile.

Seeing his affectionate smile now, Kiana was momentarily mesmerized.

Noticing Kiana’s intense gaze, Ethan frowned briefly and leaned over to whisper in her ear, "The act is over!"

The words hit Kiana like a heavy blow to the head, bringing her to her senses, a slight discomfort in her chest.

"Smith, Daphne, sorry for making you watch a joke."

It was then that Kiana noticed Mr. and Mrs. Smith had arrived.

Ethan held Kiana’s hand and introduced, "This is my beloved wife, Kiana Sutton, Kiana..."

Ethan almost instinctively called her "Kiana" without thinking, paused slightly, and continued smiling, "This is Mr. Smith, and this is his wife, Miss Daphne."

Speaking fluent Lavonian, Ethan’s smooth, sexy voice sounded mesmerizing.

Kiana was enchanted by Ethan’s Lavonian, but she didn’t forget her task. Composing herself, she smiled and extended her hand to them.

"Sorry, my wife can’t speak, but knowing you both came from Lavonia, she wanted to meet you and extend her hospitality."

Upon realizing this sweet-looking girl couldn’t speak, Mr. and Mrs. Smith felt regretful.

"That’s quite unfortunate."

Kiana’s ultimate weapon was her smile. Initially, Mr. and Mrs. Smith didn’t like Ethan for two reasons: his aloof arrogance and his immediate black glove post-handshake at their first meeting, perceived as disrespect.

But today, Ethan seemed a bit more down-to-earth, like a deity brought down from the altar.

The couple initially didn’t want to attend, but Ethan’s status in Varden and Evercrest Group’s influence left them little choice but to accept.

"Actually, no regrets. My wife’s inability to talk doesn’t affect my love for her one bit."

Knowing Ethan’s sweet words were merely to secure the collaboration, Kiana smiled outwardly, yet felt bitter inside.

They exchanged a gaze, filled with love.

Ethan was faking it.

Kiana meant it sincerely.

Seated after greetings, Ethan chatted with Mr. Smith in Lavonian, while Kiana typed a few sentences on her phone in English.

"Sorry, Miss Daphne, I cannot speak, but please permit me to communicate with you via my phone."

Daphne softly nodded, not particularly warmly.

Seeing Daphne’s eyes lingering displeasedly on Ethan’s gloved hands, Kiana guessed the reason.

She typed quickly, smiling as she handed the phone to Daphne.

"Isn’t it odd wearing gloves in such heat? Let me tell you a secret about my husband: he has an intense cleanliness obsession, and slightly compromising that makes him allergic, hence the gloves."

Reading the screen, Daphne studied Kiana’s sweet face with piercing eyes.

Kiana continued typing.

"Honestly, I feel sorry for him. In winter, gloves are fine, but in summer, they’re sweltering. His hands often get heat rash, causing misunderstandings. Some see it as rude, which isn’t the case."

Though engaging Mr. Smith in conversation, Ethan’s focus was partly on Kiana.

While Kiana typed diligently, Daphne’s expression remained cool, though fortunately patient.

"Oh, isn’t this President Sinclair and Mr. Smith?"

An untimely voice cut in, causing Ethan to frown and see the familiar, infuriating Matthew Crowe...

Decked in a black suit, Matthew Crowe arrived, arm-in-arm with his brand-clad wife, Iris Lockwood.

Feigning chance encounter, Matthew boldly joined Ethan’s table, oblivious to the social cues.

Ethan saw through Matthew’s petty schemes instantly.

Mr. Smith, evidently favoring Matthew, invited him eagerly.

Despite his dislike, Ethan couldn’t issue an eviction at such a moment.

The quartet suddenly expanded to six.

Upon hearing Ethan’s wife was mute, Matthew burst into laughter, "President Sinclair, you sure drop a bombshell! The ladies of Varden would bawl knowing you wed a mute beauty."

Matthew’s gaze swept over Kiana disdainfully, "I wonder, which prestigious family does Miss Sutton belong to?"

"Though not from noble origins, no one rivals my wife’s standing in my heart."

"Really? But I heard President Sinclair dotes on the Lynch Family heiress bedridden for over three years?"

Kiana’s heart skipped a beat; Matthew truly knew how to strike a nerve.
