Chapter 187: Chapter 187: She Was Clearly the Real Winner

The three-day-two-night trip began.

Kiana Sutton was overjoyed when she heard they were going to stargaze; Rhyolite Peaks was relatively cold, and she had packed her clothes early.

But she didn’t expect Kate Lynch to also be going.

After a moment’s thought, it made sense. For something as significant as Ethan Sinclair’s birthday, Kate Lynch wouldn’t miss it.

When getting on the bus, Kate Lynch stood close to Ethan Sinclair, making it clear she planned to sit with him.

Kiana Sutton didn’t want to watch them flaunt their affection in front of her. Plus, Ethan Sinclair kept staring at her, making her feel as if he was subtly suggesting she should take her leave. It made her chest feel unbearably stuffy.

Just then, Quinn Sinclair walked over.

Upon seeing Quinn Sinclair, Kate Lynch handed her a delicately wrapped square box. "Quinn, happy birthday."

A gift offered is a gift accepted. Quinn Sinclair took it, giving a forced smile, "Thank you, Miss Lynch."

Then she affectionately linked arms with Kiana Sutton, "Sis, I’d like to invite you to ride in the same car with me."

Kiana Sutton nodded with a smile, the two of them holding hands like schoolchildren as they made their way to the front car.

Ethan Sinclair: "..."

Kate Lynch hadn’t expected Kiana Sutton to sensibly give up the car to her and Ethan Sinclair. She was secretly thrilled and smiled at Ethan Sinclair, "Ian, get in the car, I also prepared a gift for you."

Ethan Sinclair didn’t seem to be thinking about anything and gazed intently at Kiana Sutton with dark eyes.

For a moment, Kate Lynch thought Ethan Sinclair might call out to Kiana Sutton, but he just watched her get into the car without saying anything. After a long pause, he finally said indifferently, "Let’s get in."

Kate Lynch’s eyebrows furrowed tightly; she was supposed to be the victor, but she felt strangely as if she’d lost.

But it didn’t matter, as long as Ian still liked her.

Once in the car, Kate Lynch took out an exquisite box, "To our birthday star, happy birthday."

Kate Lynch wanted to add "my dear birthday star," but she wasn’t sure about Ethan Sinclair’s attitude, so she dared not be too obvious.

"Thank you."

Ethan Sinclair took the box, though his mind was on Kiana Sutton’s gift.

He wondered if that woman had prepared a gift for him.

Seeing that Ethan Sinclair didn’t open the box and wasn’t even curious about its contents, Kate Lynch felt a pang of unease.

What was going on?

Why did Ian seem uninterested in her gift?

"Ian, aren’t you going to open it?"

Ethan Sinclair opened the box to find a limited edition watch, which was evidently expensive.

"It’s just a birthday, there’s no need for such an extravagant gift."

"That won’t do, your birthday is very important to me. Haven’t I said before? I want to gift you a whole set of clothes and accessories."

Kate Lynch’s words made Ethan Sinclair feel even more conflicted and troubled.

Logically, he should be eagerly anticipating the birthday gift that Kate would give him, but for some reason, he wasn’t as excited as he’d imagined.

"Ian, do you like this watch?"

Ethan Sinclair responded with a simple acknowledgment.

"Then let me put it on for you."

As she reached for the watch, Ethan Sinclair calmly refused, "No need, gifts should be kept safe."

Kate Lynch’s heart skipped with joy; evidently, Ian still cared about her.

Then she playfully slapped Ethan Sinclair, "It’s not like I won’t ever give you gifts again."

Ethan Sinclair said no more, but instead looked through the windshield toward the vehicle in front.

He wondered what that woman Kiana Sutton was doing.

Kiana Sutton was pretty and cute, with charming dimples when she smiled. As soon as she got in the car, she became everyone’s favorite.

Quinn Sinclair’s friends were warm and open, not at all concerned about Kiana Sutton’s muteness, and even went out of their way to make her feel at ease and happy.

"I’ve always thought people who know sign language are awesome, it’s like having an extra skill."

"By that logic, I know sign language too."

"Francis Shaw, stop showing off!"

"Hey, how’s that showing off? My sign language gestures are so spot-on you guys would guess them easily!"

"Come on, show us your sign language."

Francis Shaw raised a middle finger.

Two seconds later, he was pounded into his seat by the others.

"By your logic, I know it too."

A girl named Misty Quinn made a throat-slitting gesture, and everyone instantly got her meaning.

"Turns out, sign language isn’t all that hard."

"Hahahaha..."

Everyone broke into laughter.

When Kiana Sutton was with them, she felt relaxed and happy.

Ever since she lost the ability to speak, people around her despised her, and classmates who showed superficial sympathy belittled her with vile words behind her back.

Some said she was pretty and seduced school boys, that even fate couldn’t stand it and made her mute.

Others said she was attention-seeking, getting what’s coming to her.

She had never done anything wrong to these people, yet she was surrounded by their malice.

At first, she believed in the goodness of people and made a really good female friend.

That girl was very nice to her, not caring about others’ gossip, and continued to spend time with her.

They studied together, went to the cafeteria, and hung out.

But later, that girl betrayed her.

The girl invited her to her home, and without any suspicion, she went. As it turned out, the girl had been regularly abused by her stepfather and brought her back to let the stepfather abuse her instead, to spare herself.

At fifteen, unable to speak, she felt helpless, with no one responding to her cries for help.

Fortunately, ever since the cat incident, she always carried a pocket knife and used it to injure the girl’s father, then ran away.

After that, the girl’s family disappeared, and she never dared to open up to anyone easily again.

In college, everyone was growing up, and the four people in her dorm came from every corner of the country. After learning she couldn’t speak, the other three treated her fairly well.

She gradually emerged from those terrifying memories, but the only friend she truly opened up to was Joy Morgan.

So seeing them being so young and carefree, speaking whatever was on their minds, made her feel envious yet happy.

Quinn Sinclair leaned over and whispered to Kiana Sutton, "Sis, they’re always like this, please bear with them."

Kiana Sutton signed with a smile, "I really like them this way. They’re uninhibited and genuine, being with them is a joy."

"That’s good, they’re no good at anything else, but they’re pros at making people happy."

Soon after, everyone began giving gifts to Quinn Sinclair, and Kiana Sutton also brought out the gift she had prepared.
