His Mute Wife: He Can't Sleep After She Left-Chapter 144: I Didn’t Expect You to Be So Cruel-Hearted
Ethan Sinclair glanced over indifferently. "What?"
"Why don’t you open it and see for yourself?"
Ethan took the box, opened it, and saw inside a red woven bracelet with a red agate in the center.
"These past years, both of us have gone through a lot. You had your car accident three years ago, and I was bedridden for three years. I heard Mount Providence is quite spiritual, so last time I went, I especially got you a protection bracelet."
Seeing Ethan holding the bracelet, lost in thought, Kate Lynch continued, "I know you’ve always struggled to sleep well. This bracelet also has a calming effect. If you wear it, you’ll definitely sleep better."
Looking at Kate’s bright, cheerful smile, Ethan didn’t know why, but suddenly thought of Kiana Sutton.
He couldn’t help but wonder if that woman was nervously wringing her fingers when she went to the press conference. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
"Ian..."
"Oh, thank you."
Ethan was just about to put the bracelet away when Kate’s gaze flickered. She smiled, "Let me put it on for you!"
"No need, I..."
"You have to! You can’t let down all my good intentions."
Without waiting for Ethan’s refusal, Kate had already come to stand in front of him, picked up the bracelet from the box, and started putting it on his wrist.
Ethan instinctively frowned, but held back.
He wanted to test if he would still have an allergic reaction when Kate touched him again.
But this time, Kate was very careful, and when putting on the bracelet, she didn’t touch his skin at all.
Once it was on, Kate smiled even more brightly. "The way you usually dress is too serious. Wearing this bracelet will make you seem more approachable."
Serious?
No wonder, whenever Kiana Sutton saw him, she acted like a mouse seeing a cat.
Next, Ethan cursed under his breath. Damn it, why was he thinking about Kiana Sutton again?
Suddenly, his phone rang.
Ethan picked up the phone and saw it was a call from Quinn Sinclair.
In that instant, an unexplainable sense of unease surged in his chest. He answered immediately, "Hello..."
"Bro, Kiana’s in trouble."
Ethan’s face changed dramatically. He stood up at once, "What happened?"
"Someone reported that Kiana abused a small animal. Now the whole internet is cursing her out."
"Where is she now?"
"The press conference was postponed. Grandma took her back to The Sinclair Estate."
Ethan didn’t say another word, hung up the phone, and rushed out.
Kate, seeing this, grabbed his arm, "Ian, I’ll go with you."
"No need..."
Before Ethan could finish, Kate interrupted him, "My mom is a member of the Albatross Foundation. She was there today too. Maybe I can help out a bit."
Time was tight, and Ethan didn’t know what Kiana’s current condition was. Anxious to see her, he didn’t refuse Kate again.
In the car, Ethan saw the overwhelming negative comments online and immediately made a call.
"In one minute, I don’t want to see any news about Kiana Sutton or the Albatross Foundation online."
Ethan looked extremely grim, and when Kate noticed his anxiety and concern, she couldn’t help but feel even more hateful.
Damn Kiana Sutton. It was hard enough to get a meal alone with Ethan, and she still found a way to ruin it.
Why couldn’t she just die?
But the old lady absolutely detested people who abused animals. After this incident, for the sake of the Sinclair Family and Ethan’s reputation, there was no way the old lady would admit to the world that Kiana Sutton was Ethan’s wife.
And once Kiana was disgraced and lost the old lady’s trust, she’d be nothing.
Inside the Sinclair Estate’s main hall.
Kiana’s face was as pale as paper. She knew she’d messed up the foundation’s event today and felt deeply guilty.
Seeing the old lady’s harsh expression only made her feel worse. She anxiously signed, "Grandma, I really didn’t hit the cat. It got stuck under a slab, and I was just trying to save it."
Rosalind Joyce, though she couldn’t understand Kiana’s signing, could basically guess her meaning. She snorted in anger, "If you were just saving a cat, you could’ve just moved the slab. Why’d you have to grab a stick?"
Kiana’s face turned even paler.
Rosalind didn’t give Kiana any more chance to explain and continued scolding, "You know how important today was for the Albatross Foundation, yet you had to cause trouble. Now everyone’s cursing you online, and us too—saying they’ll never trust the Albatross again. Are you trying to destroy decades of our family’s hard work?"
Kiana shook her head in utter despair, desperately trying to explain. But in everyone’s eyes, her explanation just looked like excuses.
Rosalind looked at the mute Kiana, unable to speak and with no one understanding her sign language, and she couldn’t feel more secretly pleased.
A mute like her wants to be on the same footing as me? Dream on!
Even if it’s just the foundation’s vice chair, only I should hold that position.
"I thought, since you couldn’t talk, you’d at least have some compassion and empathy. Didn’t expect you to be so vicious."
Saying this, Rosalind turned to the old lady. "Mom, after all this, if Kiana still stays as the foundation’s vice chair, everyone will oppose it. For the sake of the foundation and the Sinclairs, I think..."
Before Rosalind could finish, the old lady gave her a bland look. "The truth hasn’t even been figured out yet and you’re certain Kiana abused the cat?"
"Mom, didn’t the vet at the rescue center already check? The wounds on the cat were made by a stick, and one of its legs is broken. What if Kiana abused the cat, and when everyone came out, she faked a cat rescue act?"
Rosalind hadn’t expected, even now, for the old lady to still take Kiana’s side. She felt even more jealous and turned to Neva Sheffield. "Neva, what do you think?"
Neva hadn’t expected something like this to happen either. She sighed and stated her opinion, "I believe Kiana isn’t that kind of person."
Rosalind scoffed, "You barely know her. How can you be sure she’s not like that? Or what, is it because Quinn told you how wonderful she is?"
Just as Neva was about to speak, Rosalind cut her off again, "Neva, don’t say I didn’t warn you—Quinn’s still young and easily deceived by hypocrites. And don’t forget, she used some dirty tricks to marry Ethan in the first place."
As soon as she finished, Ethan entered the room, face clouded. Behind him came Kate Lynch.
Ethan immediately saw Kiana. She hadn’t cried, but her eyes were brimming with tears, the tip of her nose red, and her face as white as a sheet.
Before he could speak, Rosalind instantly smiled and said, "Ethan, Kate, why are you two here together? Wow, Kate, you’re really dressed up today—did you just finish a date or something?"
Rosalind hadn’t directly asked if Kate and Ethan were out on a date, but everyone could hear exactly what she implied.
Kate glanced at the old lady, as if afraid she’d misunderstand her and Kiana. She quickly explained, "No, Ian just helped me a lot before, and since I was free today, I simply invited him out for lunch."
While speaking, Kate noticed Kiana looking at the bracelet on Ethan’s wrist, so she deliberately showed off her own wrist as well.
