His Mute Wife: He Can't Sleep After She Left-Chapter 12: His Name Will Scare You to Death
Before Kiana Sutton could respond, Hannah Lowell hurriedly walked in and said with a forced smile, "It’s fine, it’s fine, my daughter’s home, let’s keep playing, keep going!"
The apartment was only sixty square meters, with a mahjong table set up in the middle of the living room.
As soon as you walked in, a pungent, unpleasant smell hit you—it reeked of cigarette smoke, sweat, and beer.
Besides Hannah Lowell, there were two other women and a man in the house.
Each one of them was smoking; the women were dressed provocatively, and the man was shirtless.
Kiana’s eyes turned red as she stared at this scene, a throbbing pain pounding in her head.
"That mute daughter of yours? Didn’t you say she married some rich tycoon? What would she be doing in a dump like this?"
"She’s got to be lying. If her daughter was married to a rich guy, she’d have moved into a mansion by now and not still be living here."
"But honestly, Kiana really is pretty. Back when she was little, all the boys in this neighborhood liked her."
Hannah Lowell sneered, "Of course my daughter is pretty, she takes after me. And by the way, my daughter did marry a tycoon. If I told you his name, you’d probably die from shock, hmph... come on, it’s my lucky round now, I’m definitely going to—"
Before Hannah could finish, Kiana Sutton flipped the mahjong table over.
"Ah..."
The four of them all cried out, getting to their feet and shooting looks of disapproval at Kiana.
Kiana glared at them coldly and picked up a broom. She couldn’t speak, but she had her hands.
She pointed at the door, her expression fierce and unyielding.
The message was clear: Get out. If anyone hesitated, she’d hit them.
Those people had already won money after gambling all night, and were looking for an excuse to leave anyway. They weren’t about to cause a scene and quickly slunk out of the Sutton household.
"Hey, hey, don’t go! You win my money and think you can just leave?"
Hannah scrambled to chase after them, but couldn’t catch up.
Seething, Hannah stomped back to the room, pointing at Kiana’s nose and shouting, "Kiana Sutton, you really are my nemesis! Just when my luck turned, you had to chase them off! Are you going to pay me back for the money I lost...?"
Kiana tossed the broom aside and angrily signed at Hannah, "Did you go ask Zoe Xavier for money?"
Hannah looked uneasy, refusing to meet Kiana’s eyes. "I don’t know what you mean."
Thinking those people left in such a hurry that they may not have grabbed the cash in the mahjong drawer, Hannah quickly rushed over and checked each slot.
Kiana was seething, walking right up to Hannah, signing angrily whether Hannah looked or not: "Why did you go ask Zoe Xavier for money? Why?!"
Hannah kept avoiding eye contact, but Kiana relentlessly repeated her question in sign language. Annoyed, Hannah finally glared at her in anger.
"Yeah, I went to ask Zoe Xavier for money. My daughter’s been married to her son for three years, letting him sleep with her for nothing for three years. What’s wrong with me asking for a bit of pocket money? Can’t I?"
Kiana was furious. Everything that had happened back then made her feel ashamed in front of the Sinclairs, and now her mother had gone to ask Ethan’s mother for money.
"Don’t I give you money every month?"
Hannah snorted. "You call that money? You’re married to a billionaire, and you give me that measly amount every month? What am I, a beggar to you?"
Kiana took a deep breath and stared coldly at Hannah. "How much did you get from Zoe Xavier?"
Hannah frowned. "What do you want to know for!?"
"Say it!"
"Only two hundred thousand, that’s all. She’s a big celebrity, so rich, and I’m her in-law. She only gave me two hundred thousand. How stingy is that?"
Kiana clenched her fists so tight her nails broke the skin of her palm. "Where’s the money?"
"Gone! Your brother needs tuition, I have to look after the family, grease some palms in prison so your dad lives a bit better inside—doesn’t all that cost money? I’m a woman holding this family together, isn’t it hard for me? You, as my daughter, not only don’t appreciate what I do, but also embarrass me in front of people."
Hannah collapsed onto the sofa, wailing. "Why is my life so hard!"
Kiana didn’t believe a single word. Her father had been in prison for more than three years, and Hannah had only visited him once; every visit, it was Kiana who went and took care of things—Hannah never bothered at all.
"You’re lying. You lost all the money gambling!"
The moment she mentioned that, Hannah got even angrier. She jumped up from the sofa, glaring at Kiana. "And whose fault is that? I lost all night long, and just when my luck turned, you showed up and messed everything up. If it hadn’t been for you, I would have won all the money back."
Looking at Hannah’s twisted, frantic face, Kiana felt both exhausted and heartbroken.
Hannah’s gambling habit wasn’t new, but now, with the family in such dire straits—her father suffering in prison—not only was Hannah gambling even more, she was also going to Zoe Xavier for money.
Two hundred thousand!
She actually lost it all!
Kiana was furious and at a loss for what to do. She didn’t want to look at Hannah anymore and stormed out in anger.
But Hannah hurried after her and grabbed Kiana’s arm in a tight grip. "You can’t leave. I don’t have any money left, you—"
Before she could finish, Kiana shook her off coldly and signed with a blank face, "I have no money. If you don’t quit gambling, I won’t give you another cent."
Seeing Hannah’s growing rage, Kiana continued signing, "Don’t even think about going to Zoe Xavier again. The Sinclairs don’t like me as it is. If you keep messing around, when Ethan divorces me, all your schemes from three years ago will have been for nothing."
Ignoring Hannah’s furious screaming and curses, Kiana walked straight out of that suffocating home.
The sky was gray and hazy. At some point, it had started drizzling.
Kiana’s mind was full of that two hundred thousand from Zoe Xavier.
Even though the money was extorted by Hannah from Zoe, Kiana felt she had to find a way to repay it.
But with her current six-thousand-a-month salary, how long would it take to save up two hundred thousand?
Her phone dinged twice. Kiana took it out—it was a message from Nathan Lawson.
"Miss Sutton, President Sinclair wants you to bring a gray suit from his wardrobe and a blue-striped tie to the Venus Hotel within the hour."
As soon as she walked in the villa, Kiana noticed something off.
Before, there were always three or four maids in Ethan Sinclair’s villa. When he was away, they’d snack on sunflower seeds and gossip—it was lively and noisy.
But today, it was unusually quiet.
"Madam."
Chelsea Chapman?
Kiana was a bit surprised to see Chelsea Chapman.
"Mm, mm, starting today, I’ll be the one looking after you and Mr. Sinclair."
Chelsea Chapman was the daughter of Nanny Chapman, who’d always served the old lady. Chelsea was lively and talkative.
After the old lady heard that the maids in Ethan’s villa had been picking on Kiana, she sent Chelsea to help Kiana and keep an eye on Ethan at the same time.
"Madam, if you need anything, just use sign language with me—I’m learning, and I pick things up fast."
Seeing the earnest, slightly goofy expression on Chelsea’s face, Kiana smiled slightly, "Alright, then I’ll count on you."
"No trouble at all, that’s what I’m here for."
Kiana was still thinking about delivering clothes to Ethan Sinclair, so she didn’t have time to chat with Chelsea for too long.
After grabbing the suit and tie, she hurried straight to the Venus Hotel.
When she got to the room Nathan Lawson had indicated, he was standing just outside, still as impeccably dressed and proper as always, making everyone instinctively stand at attention around her.
"Secretary Sutton, President Sinclair is waiting for you inside."
Nathan opened the door for Kiana. She nodded slightly, then, as something occurred to her, she signed, "Secretary Lawson, can I ask what happened?"
