Chapter 82: From Creep to Currency

Zain vanished in an instant.

Quick Step.

He reappeared right behind the man, silent.

The man flinched, spinning with wide eyes.

"How—?! I activated Sound Drown!"

"You shouldn’t even know I’m here!"

Zain didn’t answer.

Instead, he stared him down, scanning him.

---

Zain let out a small breath, then smirked.

"I’ve known you were here since the moment I brought Velra into this room."

Grayn’s mouth opened slightly.

Zain took a step forward.

"Even if you turn invisible. Even if you go dead silent."

He leaned in, voice low.

"It doesn’t matter when I already marked your presence."

Grayn backed up once, shoes scraping the floor.

"You—"

Zain’s eyes glinted.

"...Grayn."

Grayn froze.

"Shit..."

His body jolted into motion.

He spun around and bolted toward the far wall.

Specter Drift.

He phased through the stacked crates.

The room opened up to him like a maze with no walls.

Anything solid was now a doorway.

He passed through crates, beams, and even a storage locker.

But Zain didn’t wait.

Quick Step.

In a single step, Zain was already halfway through the cargo hold.

"You really thought that’d work?"

Grayn didn’t respond.

He couldn’t. Not while phasing.

He focused only on moving.

On surviving.

Zain kept pace without breaking a sweat.

He appeared again ahead of Grayn.

Grayn phased directly through one crate, hoping to dodge.

Zain vanished and reappeared right behind him.

"Come on, coward."

Zain smirked.

"You were there when Velra broke. You had the front-row seat."

"But you didn’t step in. Why not?"

Grayn passed through another stack of metal cases.

Zain followed again.

"Was it because you were scared?"

Zain tilted his head, speaking louder.

"Or was it because you liked watching her crawl?"

Grayn’s breath hitched.

Still no answer. Still phased.

Zain caught up again, standing in front of the crate Grayn was moving through.

When Grayn emerged, Zain was already there.

Zain grabbed his arm the moment he fully rematerialized.

"You’re out of tricks."

Grayn struggled, trying to phase again.

But the cooldown hadn’t finished.

Zain then dragged him backward.

He slammed him against a crate.

"Tell me, who sent you? And don’t lie. I’ll know."

Grayn’s eyes widened. He hesitated.

Zain’s grip tightened.

"I’m not asking twice."

Grayn swallowed hard. His voice came out shaky.

"Y-Yes! I admit it—I watched the whole thing."

"I... I enjoyed it, okay? That’s why I didn’t move."

Zain’s eyes narrowed.

"You enjoyed watching her get broken... and you just stood there?"

Grayn nodded frantically.

"I—I mean, yeah."

"She’s Razorwaltz! I never thought I’d see her like that."

Zain’s expression didn’t shift.

"And why were you even here?"

Grayn stammered.

"I wasn’t sent! No one sent me! I just..."

"I knew there was something important on this train."

"That briefcase... I wanted to steal it."

"Take the credit. Finish the job before anyone else."

Zain exhaled through his nose, slowly piecing it together.

"So you’re the kind of villain that doesn’t fight."

"Just hides and waits for others to do the hard part."

Grayn nodded quickly.

"Y-Yeah. Exactly! I’m a coward! So let me go."

"You don’t need to waste time on someone like me."

Zain raised his other hand and pressed it against Grayn’s neck.

"I was going to let you go."

His fingers tightened.

"But here’s the problem—"

A system window flickered behind Zain’s eyes.

[Hack Points: 9,380]

Zain leaned in close.

"You know, I’m only about a thousand points short of what I need for my next upgrade."

Grayn’s eyes widened.

"W-What?"

Zain tilted his head.

"I need a mid-tier ability. Something useful. Efficient." freeweɓnovel.cѳm

"But the system doesn’t work on promises."

Grayn started shaking.

"I-I can get you the points! Just give me a chance—"

Zain shook his head slowly.

"No, no. You don’t understand how this works."

He smiled, calm.

"To get a thousand points, I need raw material. Something B-Rank."

Grayn’s face paled. "Y-You mean—?"

Zain nodded once. "Yep. You."

Grayn struggled against the grip, panicked now.

"W-Wait—come on! I didn’t hurt anyone! I was just hiding! Watching!"

Zain shrugged.

"Exactly. You watched. Hid. Waited. Did nothing."

Grayn gasped, desperate.

"I-I can work for you! Spy! Steal!"

Zain’s fingers twitched slightly at his neck.

"You had your chance."

"And I don’t keep cowards. I recycle them."

Zain then smirked.

"Don’t worry. I’ll make it quick."

Grayn’s eyes widened in horror.

"N-No—wait—!"

Zain didn’t wait.

He activated Hard Grip.

One brutal twist.

Grayn’s neck snapped with a sickening crack.

His mouth hung open, breath frozen mid-scream.

The body collapsed.

Limp and lifeless.

Zain looked down.

"Now, you’ll become part of me."

Zain exhaled slowly.

"Perfect. Finally hit the mark."

He tapped his finger against his temple.

"One mid-tier ability, coming soon."

His lips curled into a grin.

"Don’t worry, Grayn. You didn’t die for nothing."

"You just... upgraded someone better."

He turned toward the nearest mirror.

"But I’ll deal with upgrades later. For now—"

He stepped into the mirror without hesitation.

"Time to get back to my cabin before they notice I’ve been gone too long."

He vanished, the mirror rippling shut behind him.

---

Zain appeared back quietly in his cabin.

Zelia perked up from the bed.

"There you are."

Zain raised an eyebrow.

"Miss me that much?"

She pouted. "You were gone too long."

He walked over, unbuckling his jacket.

"Handling some cleanup."

Zelia tugged at his sleeve. "Come sleep with me."

Zain blinked. "Huh?"

Zelia frowned.

"It’s been a long time since we’ve slept together."

"Just rest. I don’t want you sneaking off again."

Zain smirked. "I see. Sure, big sis."

He turned to the side.

"Savra, you can join us too if you want."

Savra waved him off with a lazy smile.

"No need. Just sleep with your sister tonight."

She stretched slightly and added with a smirk.

"If I join, she won’t fall asleep."

Zain chuckled. "Yeah, fair enough."

Zelia frowned and pointed at the bed.

"Come here already."

"Alright, alright. Don’t get bossy, big sis."

She smiled faintly.

"Tomorrow, we’re sticking together all day. No excuses."

Zain rolled his eyes and lay down beside her.

"Sure, sure," he said.

"You got me for the whole day."

Zelia curled up beside him. "Good."
