Chapter 51: Chapter 51

Amelia stepped through the front door, thoroughly exhausted. It had been a long day filled with endless meetings, tedious discussions, and hours spent perfecting her designs. She barely had the energy to take off her heels when a small, warm body pressed against her legs.

Looking down, she saw Poppy rubbing against her, his fluffy tail curling around her calf.

"Hey, Poppy," she murmured, bending down to run her fingers through his soft fur. Poppy purred in response, rubbing against her more insistently, as if sensing her fatigue.

She straightened, glancing around. The house was unusually quiet. "Where’s Kai?" she asked absentmindedly.

Poppy meowed in response, his golden eyes blinking up at her. Amelia took that as an I don’t know and sighed. He’s probably still out.

Shaking off the thought, she made her way to her room. Stripping off her coat, she headed straight for the bathroom. After a long, hot shower, she changed into a comfortable nightgown and sat at her desk, resuming her work on her latest designs.

Minutes passed, then hours. Her blinks began to grow heavier.

She yawned.

"Just thirty minutes," she told herself, resting her head against her folded arms. "A short rest won’t hurt."

When Amelia opened her eyes again, the room was dark, and her body felt stiff from sleeping in the same position.

She glanced at the clock.

3:30 AM.

She groaned, running a hand through her hair. "Damn it," she muttered. I overslept. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

Her throat felt dry. She needed water.

Pulling on a robe, she padded downstairs, her bare feet silent against the cold floor. As she made her way downstairs, a thought crossed her mind, had Kai come back yet?

Reaching the kitchen, she poured herself a glass of water and took a sip. Then she froze.

There, slumped against the wall, was Kai.

For a second, she thought he was just resting, but then she saw it, a deep red stain seeping through his shirt, spreading across his stomach.

Her breath hitched. Panic surged through her.

"Kai!" She rushed forward, kneeling beside him. "What happened to you? I’ll call 911!"

His eyes fluttered open at her voice, their usual laziness dulled by pain. He caught her wrist weakly.

"No." His voice was hoarse. "Don’t. Just... get the first aid kit. In my room."

Her heart pounded. "Kai, you’re bleeding! You need a doctor—"

"Amelia... please."

She hesitated. He was really bleeding, yet he didn’t want to see a doctor? Why?

Her hands trembled, but she knew arguing would only waste time. Swallowing hard, she nodded and got to her feet.

The moment she stepped inside, she took a second to register the space. The room was meticulously clean, everything in its place. The faint scent of wood and coffee lingered in the air, calming yet oddly fitting for him.

This was her first time entering his room.

She scanned the shelves and cabinets quickly before spotting the first aid kit. Snatching it up, she rushed back downstairs.

She knelt beside him again, calming herself as she pulled up his shirt, revealing the wound. It wasn’t fatal, but it was deep. Without a word, she began cleaning the blood. She had never done this before, so all she was doing was basically guesswork.

Kai watched her work quietly.

Even in the dim light, she looked angelic, the way her lashes lowered in focus, the way her lips parted slightly as she concentrated. Her expression was cold, yet her hands were gentle.

Fuck.

She was beautiful.

Really beautiful.

His fingers twitched.

Before he could stop himself, he reached out, tangled his hand in her hair, and pulled her close.

She gasped in surprise, but before she could react, his lips crashed against hers.

Her eyes widened in shock. The kiss was deep and forceful, the taste of blood filling her mouth.

She tried to pull away, but he didn’t let her. His grip was firm and possessive. She made a muffled noise of protest before resorting to the only thing she could think of, she bit him.

Kai finally let go, but instead of looking offended, he only chuckled, his voice rough with amusement. He smirked, leaning in again, but she pressed a hand against his chest.

She glared at him, wiping her lips. "What the hell was that?"

He lazily leaned back against the wall. "Couldn’t help myself."

She was about to retort when she caught sight of his half-bandaged wound. Annoyance flickered in her eyes. "If we continue, I won’t be able to finish. Stop moving."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "If we continue?" His lips curled. "Are you implying something, Amelia?"

She exhaled sharply. "I meant bandaging your wound."

Kai raised an eyebrow.

"If we continue, I won’t be able to finish bandaging you," she said, her tone flat.

He chuckled but stayed still, letting her continue. She resumed her work, carefully wrapping the bandage.

Still, despite her calm expression, Kai noticed the way her ears had turned a deep shade of red.

Kai tilted his head, fascinated. Without thinking, he reached out and brushed his fingers against them.

Amelia flinched slightly. "What are you doing?"

"They looked cute," he admitted easily, watching her reaction. "I was wondering if they’d get redder if I touched them."

Her expression darkened slightly. What is he playing at?

He wouldn’t like her, would he?

When she was finally done, she stood up and realized she had no idea what to do next. Cooking wasn’t her strong suit, and he definitely needed something to replenish his strength.

After a brief pause, she grabbed a bottle of milk from the fridge and handed it to him.

Kai stared at it for a moment before chuckling. "Milk?"

"You need something," she said flatly.

Still amused, he took the bottle, opened it, and took a sip. Then, after a moment, he glanced at her. "Aren’t you going to ask?"

"Ask what?"

"Why I’m hurt."

Amelia crossed her arms. "No. It’s none of my business."

The amusement in his eyes dimmed, and the smile on his lips fell.

"We agreed not to pry into each other’s affairs," she added.

Kai was silent.

Yes, they had agreed not to pry into each other’s business, but yet, hearing her say it so plainly...

It hurt so badly.
