Chapter 46: 46. Own Relative_1

After mumbling to herself, Sun Yanyan remembered the important matter at hand, “Dad, mom wants you to bring back a jug of oil; I’ll watch the store for you first, and you can pick up the child as well.”

Her daughter, Song Ziyi, was currently at the senior class level in kindergarten, but today was Saturday, and she had gone to a nearby hobby class to learn chess.

Song Dafang was beside himself with anger—raising sons and daughters was nothing but debt!

Although he’d raised his children, now in their old age, he and his wife had yet to enjoy any comfort from them.

Not only did they have to support their son’s family of three, but they also had to pay for their granddaughter’s tuition, provide transportation, and take care of cooking, washing dishes, and doing laundry…

Here, his shrewd daughter-in-law wouldn’t spend a penny of her own money; even a jug of oil had to wait for him to purchase.

...

It was truly a life of endless servitude!

While he harbored deep resentment, once he lifted the jug of oil and waited outside the hobby class for his granddaughter, the little girl ran over with a big bow on her head, cheerfully shouting in a bright and sweet voice:

“Grandpa!”

“Ah!”

In an instant, Song Dafang forgot the displeasure he’d been feeling, feeling nothing but sweet contentment.

After the family returned to their apartment behind the store and opened the door, Mao Li, who had been cooking in the kitchen, came hurrying out, still complaining:

“You old man, I asked you to buy a jug of oil, and it took you until now to get back; we’re waiting to start cooking!”

At the same time, she peered at the small basket of vegetables in his hand, fresh and dewy. She couldn’t help but wonder, “What did you buy this time?”

After a closer look: “Oh my, Milk Vetch! It’s been decades since we’ve had it; we can stir-fry it for lunch.”

Quick to respond, Song Dafang said, “Tantan brought it over with Qiaoqiao this morning. She said they’ve been selling vegetables at Riverside Market these days.”

“What?”

Mao Li was startled out of the blue.

“Selling vegetables? Wasn’t Tantan working in Ning Province? How come she’s back selling vegetables?”

Sun Yanyan, having changed her shoes, squeezed over, giving the vegetables a glance: “This stuff isn’t worth much; once it’s not fresh, it won’t taste good. Bringing so much…you can’t even give it away to the neighbors.”

Seeing that Song Dafang’s face grew even darker, Mao Li knew he disapproved of what his daughter-in-law had said and quickly added, “What’s brought is the thought; we’ll stir-fry for lunch to have something fresh.”

Song Dafang snorted coldly and went to watch TV with his granddaughter.

Meanwhile, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law picked vegetables together, chatting away warmly:

“Mom, today Tantan came over in a small, rundown pickup truck. She said she’s going to stay at her hometown to farm, and these vegetables are leftovers they brought from selling.”

“Goodness me!” Mao Li really hadn’t expected that: “She’s staying in her hometown to farm? As a girl, she had a good job in Ning City, which was comfortable and respectable. Now that she’s back home, what about her prospects in marriage?”

“Exactly.”

Sun Yanyan sighed with a sense of gravity:

“You say Tantan has a foolish younger brother; her marriage prospects were uncertain to start with, and now she’s gone back to her hometown. Who would want to marry a girl who farms?”

“Sigh, I was just saying, I recently met a young man who has both a house and a car, and his family is all capable. I was planning to introduce him to her!”

“After all, Tantan is truly beautiful, and she looks even better now! Her skin is snow-white and glowing; youth is so wonderful, I think she’s even prettier than the stars on TV.”

Mao Li joined in the wistfulness: “Yes, both kids in your uncle’s family are good-looking.”

“If you come across the right person, you should still make the introduction; they are family after all.”

“What I say is, their family has it tough too. Look at your dad; in his youth, he was ambitious and capable, and he managed to earn a little family fortune in our city. Now, at least we don’t have to worry about food and drink.”

“Your uncle and his family, though, insisted on sticking to their old home when they were young. They didn’t plan well when having children; look at Qiaoqiao, such a fine young man, yet he’s a fool.”

“They’ve not stopped working hard their whole lives but they just lack foresight, with too narrow a perspective. Now, still stuck in their old home, I bet the little money they have wouldn’t even cover a down payment.”

As they talked, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law found more and more to discuss. Sun Yanyan thought for a moment:

“How old is Qiaoqiao this year?”

“Eighteen, I think?” Mao Li was also not quite sure.

Sun Yanyan pondered for a moment, “If you ask me, with Qiaoqiao in this state, we need to find him a wife right away. With a wife to keep an eye on him, my uncle and the rest could go out and work to earn more money, and then they wouldn’t have to worry about getting by in their old age.”

“After all, we can’t count on Qiaoqiao to take care of them when they’re old.”

“That’s true,” Mao Li felt that this daughter-in-law was speaking right to her heart:

“I’ve said this before too, we need to carry on the family line, right? Qiaoqiao is such a fine young man, if he gets married and has a son, who knows? Maybe the boy won’t have any problems?”

“While your third uncle and his wife are still young, they could raise the grandson, and then their family would have someone to rely on later.”

Song Dafang was just about to take something out of the fridge when he heard the conversation and glared at them:

“What are you talking about? Sancheng staying at home to care for our parents has saved us so much trouble, and here you are scheming behind our backs!”

Sun Yanyan pursed her lips and didn’t argue.

But Mother-in-law Mao Li was displeased:

“Scheming? We are thinking of his best interests. In Qiaoqiao’s condition, if they don’t have a grandson, what will they do when they’re old? Don’t you end up having to take care of your parents and your brother too!”

Song Dafang glared at her as well:

“With Qiaoqiao like this, how are we supposed to find him a wife? Besides, what if the child ends up having the same problems? How do you expect them to live?”

“This…”

Mao Li was at a loss for words.

It was Sun Yanyan who quickly chimed in, “It’s not always like that. First find him a wife to take care of him, don’t look for those clever girls, but one who’s a bit silly, honest, someone who can manage daily life.”

“And about having children, medical science is so advanced these days. You can detect problems during pregnancy, and if the child has problems, you just don’t keep it.”

“Dad, don’t be angry, Mom cares about you.”

“Grandpa and grandma are back in our hometown, we’re bound to spend money and efforts for them eventually. If the youngest uncle has a good life, it’ll be easier for us too.”

“If he becomes a burden in their old age, Dad, you certainly won’t just stand by and watch.”

“Isn’t this because we’re worried about the burden on you later?”

Song Dafang paused for a moment, then said nothing. He closed the fridge door and walked back to the living room with a thump.

By the time lunch hour arrived, the working son, Song Xuehai, came home, and the family hurriedly got busy serving up the meal.

There was a dish of green vegetables on the table that seemed unfamiliar, and Song Xuehai couldn’t help but ask, “What’s this?”

“I know, I know!”

Song Ziyi, the granddaughter, said, “Grandpa said, this is what Qiaoqiao brother brought over.”

Song Xuehai laughed at her, “I told you, don’t call him brother, call him uncle.”

But the daughter ignored him and clumsily stretched out her chopsticks, “I want to eat the vegetables Qiaoqiao brother brought.”

The fresh green vegetables stir-fried with minced garlic were now giving off an enticing aroma on the dining table.

Song Ziyi took a bite with an “ah-woof” and then eagerly reached out for more:

“Qiaoqiao brother’s vegetables are so delicious, the tastiest in the world!”

“You little one, what have you eaten to compare?” Song Dafang glanced at her and then also took a bite with his chopsticks.

The taste was indeed exceptional.

By the time the family had snapped back to reality, the dish was already empty.

Song Ziyi was staring blankly at the plate, suddenly burst into tears: “I want more, I’m not full!”

Mao Li hurriedly cleaned up the dishes, “Don’t cry, grandma will make more right away, there’s plenty left.”

Sun Yanyan also chimed in, still relishing the taste, “Mom, why don’t we just cook up the rest? It really does taste quite good.”

After thinking for a moment, she added, “Or else, Mom, when you go shopping tomorrow, why not also check out the Riverside Market? It’s family business, it doesn’t seem right not to support them.”
