Help! I'm just an extra yet the Heroines and Villainesses want me!-Chapter 42
The finals between Liam and Seraphina happened an hour later, and William watched from the back of the crowd where he could observe without drawing attention.
The match was exactly what everyone expected, two of the academy’s strongest students going all out in a technical showcase that had the entire arena captivated. Seraphina’s overwhelming aggression met Liam’s refined precision in exchanges that were almost too fast to follow properly.
The fight lasted eight minutes before Liam secured victory through superior tactical awareness, catching Seraphina in a position where she had to either surrender or take a strike that would have been genuinely dangerous in a real fight. She lowered her weapon and accepted the loss without complaint.
The crowd erupted in applause as both fighters descended from the platform. William used the noise and distraction to slip away before anyone noticed, heading back toward his dormitory to avoid the post-match crowds.
The room was still empty with Kai at his library retreat. William collapsed onto his bed and stared at the ceiling, thinking about tomorrow’s specialty challenges and how exhausted he already felt from three consecutive days of competition.
A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.
William opened it and found Mira standing there with a bag of food.
"I figured you’d skip dinner to avoid crowds," she said while walking in without invitation. "Incase I brought an extra."
"Thanks."
They ate in comfortable silence, Mira sitting at Kai’s desk while William remained on his bed. It was nice having someone around who didn’t require constant conversation or explanation.
"You looked good against Liam," Mira said after a while. "L
You lost, obviously, but you lasted longer than most people would have."
"He’s on a completely different level," William admitted.
"Most people are on completely different levels from where they started," Mira observed. "You’ve improved more in a few months than I’ve seen anyone improve in years. That’s worth acknowledging even if you’re not winning finals yet."
William appreciated the straightforward assessment without false encouragement or excessive praise. Mira had a way of being honest that didn’t feel insulting.
"Are you ready for tomorrow?" she asked.
"As ready as I can be. Specialty challenges are unpredictable by design."
"True. But you adapt well under pressure. That’s more useful than people think." Mira stood and gathered the empty food containers. "Get some rest. Tomorrow’s going to be interesting."
She left, and William found himself feeling slightly better about the week despite everything that had happened. Some people just made situations easier by existing in them without complicating things further.
The rest of Thursday evening passed quietly. William reviewed what little information was publicly available about specialty challenges, they changed every year to prevent preparation, testing different aspects of cultivation and combat beyond simple fighting ability.
Friday morning arrived with clear skies and a different energy than the previous competition days. The specialty challenges weren’t about direct combat, which meant the atmosphere felt less aggressive and more curious.
Eight students remained: Liam, Seraphina, William, Claire, Lyanna, Adrian Thorne from Arcturus, Devon Marsh from Luminara, and Patricia Crane from Ascendant.
The challenges would happen simultaneously at different stations around the arena, with students rotating through each challenge and accumulating points based on performance. Combined with their combat rankings from earlier in the week, the final scores would determine the top ten for the Inter-Academy team.
"Welcome to the final day of competition," Headmistress Nectaris announced. "Today’s challenges test adaptability, essence control, problem-solving, and versatility. You’ll face four stations with different requirements. Performance at each station contributes to your overall ranking."
The four challenge stations were revealed:
Station One: Essence Manipulation Under Interference
Students had to maintain precise essence control while external forces disrupted their cultivation. This tested mental discipline and technical precision under adverse conditions.
Station Two: Environmental Adaptation
Students entered chambers with extreme conditions—intense heat, freezing cold, high pressure—and had to demonstrate combat effectiveness despite the environment.
Station Three: Tactical Problem Solving
Students faced simulated scenarios requiring strategic thinking rather than combat skill. This tested their ability to analyze situations and make effective decisions.
Station Four: Affinity Versatility
Students demonstrated their range of techniques and creative application of their affinities beyond basic combat usage.
"You’ll rotate through stations in assigned groups," Headmistress Nectaris continued. "Groups are randomized. Begin when your group is called."
William checked the assignment board and found himself in the second rotation group with Lyanna and Adrian Thorne. The first group was Liam, Seraphina, and Devon. The third group would be Claire, Patricia, and whoever else from the remaining competitors.
The first group headed to their starting stations while William and his group waited. He could see Liam at Station One, already demonstrating the kind of essence control that made him the academy’s top student. Seraphina was at Station Two, apparently thriving in whatever extreme environment they’d created for her.
"Nervous?" Lyanna asked, appearing beside William.
"Not particularly. Just waiting."
"The challenges look interesting. More technical than I expected." Lyanna’s violet eyes studied the various stations with clear intellectual curiosity. "Station Three especially. I wonder what kind of scenarios they’ve designed."
"Probably things that can’t be solved by just hitting them harder," William said.
"Which means Seraphina will hate it," Lyanna observed with a slight smile.
They watched the first group rotate through stations for thirty minutes before the announcement came for the second group to begin. William, Lyanna, and Adrian split up to their assigned starting positions.
William began at Station Four—Affinity Versatility. The judges wanted him to demonstrate creative applications of his fire affinity beyond combat usage.
He started by creating multiple independent flames and manipulating them into complex patterns, showing the control Master Erian had helped him develop. Then he demonstrated fire’s utility applications—using heat to reshape metal, creating light in darkness, generating warmth without flame.
The judges seemed impressed when William showed he could sustain fire essence while simultaneously channeling neutral essence for enhancement, demonstrating his multi-tasking capability. His wind affinity was close enough to usable that he could show basic air current manipulation, though not enough for actual combat techniques yet.
Fifteen minutes at Station Four, then rotation to Station One.
The Essence Manipulation Under Interference challenge was harder. William had to maintain stable essence circulation while machines created disrupting frequencies that interfered with cultivation. It felt like trying to meditate while someone shook the floor and shouted randomly.
He managed to keep his essence flow consistent despite the interference, though his precision degraded noticeably compared to normal conditions. The judges noted his performance without comment.
Station Two was Environmental Adaptation, and William’s chamber was set to extreme cold. His fire affinity actually helped here—he could generate heat to counter the temperature while demonstrating combat forms in the freezing conditions.
The cold affected his movement speed and made essence enhancement slightly less efficient, but he adapted by using fire essence more liberally to maintain body temperature and weapon effectiveness. Fifteen minutes of fighting invisible opponents in subfreezing temperatures left him exhausted but satisfied with his performance.
Final station was Station Three—Tactical Problem Solving.
William entered a room with a large tactical display showing a simulated combat scenario. Multiple enemy units surrounded a defensive position that needed to be held. He had limited friendly forces with different capabilities and had to allocate them effectively.
The scenario was complicated, with enemies having different strengths that required specific counters. William analyzed the situation, identified priority threats, and assigned his forces to create a defensive formation that leveraged their individual strengths while covering weaknesses.
The simulation ran and his strategy held for the required duration, though he lost more units than optimal due to not accounting for one enemy’s ability to bypass certain defensive techniques.
"Acceptable performance," the judge said. "You prioritized correctly but missed some tactical nuances. That comes with experience."
William rotated out as the third group entered their stations. He found a place to sit and rest while waiting for all groups to complete the challenges. The exhaustion was cumulative at this point—three days of intense competition had drained everyone’s essence reserves and mental energy.
Claire was at Station Two when William happened to glance that direction. She emerged from her environmental chamber looking more composed than she had during yesterday’s matches, which was a relief. Whatever had been affecting her seemed to have stabilized somewhat.
The specialty challenges concluded by early afternoon. Students gathered in the main arena while faculty calculated final scores based on combat performance, team battles, and specialty challenge results.
"Results will be posted in one hour," Headmistress Nectaris announced. "The top ten will be revealed at that time and officially named to our Inter-Academy competition team."
William found a quiet spot and waited with everyone else. The hour passed slowly, students discussing their performances and speculating about rankings. Some looked confident, others appeared nervous, and a few seemed resigned to not making the cut.
Finally, faculty members posted the official results on display boards. Students rushed forward to check, creating a crowded mass around the displays.
William waited for the crowd to thin before approaching.
**INTER-ACADEMY TEAM - FINAL SELECTIONS**
1. Liam Hemsworth (Luminara)
2. Seraphina Ashenheart (Arcturus)
3. Adrian Thorne (Arcturus)
4. Lyanna Stormweaver (Luminara)
5. William Cross (Ascendant)
6. Claire Hivolt (Luminara)
7. Marcus Reid (Arcturus)
8. Patricia Crane (Ascendant)
9. Devon Marsh (Luminara)
10. Kira Stone (Valoris)
William had placed fifth overall, guaranteeing his spot on the Inter-Academy team. Adrian and Patricia had both made it from Ascendant as well, fulfilling Adrian’s goal of getting three house members selected.
Liam and Seraphina held the top two positions as expected. Lyanna had placed fourth, which was impressive given the competition level. Claire had made sixth, barely securing her position despite her struggles during individual matches.
"Congratulations to our ten representatives," Headmistress Nectaris announced. "You’ll begin specialized training next week in preparation for the Inter-Academy competition in six weeks. Further details will be provided Monday. For now, rest and recover."
Students began dispersing, some celebrating their selection while others dealt with the disappointment of not making the cut. William headed back toward his dormitory, feeling satisfied with fifth place but mostly just tired.
"William!"
He turned and found Adrian approaching with Patricia and Mira behind him.
"Three from Ascendant," Adrian said with genuine satisfaction. "That’s the best our house has done in years. Well fought this week."
"You too," William replied.
"We should celebrate properly," Mira suggested. "Whole house thing, not just the competitors. Show everyone that Ascendant isn’t the weakest house anymore."
"Tomorrow," Patricia said. "Everyone’s too exhausted today to properly celebrate anything."
They agreed and went their separate ways. William finally made it back to his room and found Kai had returned from his library retreat, reading at his desk as always.
"How’d the competition go?" Kai asked without looking up.
"I made the team. Fifth place."
"Not bad. Didn’t die or have any dramatic incidents?"
"Mostly avoided drama," William said while collapsing onto his bed.
"That’s probably the best outcome you could have hoped for," Kai observed. "Now you get six weeks of specialized training before the actual Inter-Academy competition. That should be interesting."
William closed his eyes and decided to worry about specialized training later. Right now, he just wanted to sleep for twelve hours and not think about competitions, rankings, or anything more complicated than his comfortable bed.
The inter-house competition was over. He’d survived, advanced, and earned his spot on the team.
That was enough for now.
