Chapter 308: Enchanted Entrances and Unexpected Defenses

"By the way, are the doors on the first floor and the main entrance also locked with the same magical mechanism?"

"Indeed, they are. All permission management can be handled from the study," Elyon replied.

"Understood," Isaac said with a nod.

It seemed they would get a full explanation in the study later.

Still, Damien couldn’t help but marvel at the elves’ skill with magic.

Using magic even for the mansion itself—impressive.

It sounded fascinating, but he couldn’t help but worry if they would be able to handle it properly.

"Now, may I ask something as well?"

As the discussion about locks came to an end, Theo, who had stepped into the room to inspect the bathroom and toilet, spoke up.

"Hm? What is it?" Elyon asked.

"There seem to be water facilities in the bathroom and toilet, but how are you handling the water supply and drainage? Since you brought the entire mansion here via apport, it shouldn’t be connected to any water lines, right?"

Wait, really? Damien thought.

After hearing Theo’s question, Damien went over to the bathroom and fiddled with a familiar lion-shaped magical device.

Water flowed normally from the showerhead.

It also ran into the bathtub, and when he removed the drain plug, it drained away just like it would in a regular house.

"There’s no issue," Elyon explained. "As I mentioned earlier, this mansion was originally meant to be used in the elven village. Since there’s no plumbing in the village, all water is created and disposed of with magic."

Oh.

"...Uh, and where does the magic power for that come from?" Damien asked.

"I’ll show you later," Elyon replied. "But in short, there’s a magic crystal set up to manage everything in the house, including the locks. From what I’ve been told, it’s designed to last at least a hundred years. When it runs out, you’ll just need to replace it with a new one."

"A magic crystal with enough stored power to last a hundred years...? No, let’s not think too hard about this. I understand," Theo said, shaking his head after turning a little bit pale at the implications.

Damien sympathized.

He had already decided not to think too deeply about these things.

"Oh, by the way, Elyon," Damien said, breaking the momentary silence, "are the bed sheets and canopies made from Elven fabric?"

Unlike the servant quarters, the guest room beds were fully equipped with mattresses, sheets, and even curtains draped around them.

The white embroidered fabric looked pristine and elegant.

Damien had been trying not to pay too much attention to it, thinking it might be overly expensive, but Theo bringing it up suggested it wasn’t as costly as he feared.

"Indeed," Elyon said, nodding. "The idea was to use what was readily available. The fabric is cotton—what you call Elven weave. Oh, by the way, we didn’t prepare any pillows. You lower species seem to have particular preferences when it comes to them."

Damien chuckled internally.

While he didn’t mind much, he knew some people couldn’t sleep without their specific type of pillow.

"Damien! This is good news!" Theo exclaimed. "Elven weave is rare, but it’s simply cloth made from cotton harvested in the Elven forests. It’s not particularly expensive. Finally, something reasonable!"

Relieved, Damien reached out to touch the sheets he had been avoiding until now.

The fabric was smooth and soft to the touch, exuding comfort.

And most importantly—it wasn’t expensive!

Feeling a small sense of satisfaction, Damien gently ran his hand over the sheets, appreciating their texture.

After inspecting the other guest rooms and the larger room for distinguished guests at the far end of the hall, they finished exploring the right wing of the second floor.

The distinguished guest room was only slightly larger than the standard guest rooms, with the addition of a small parlor.

It resembled the rooms in Theo’s mansion where Damien was currently staying, albeit on a smaller scale.

One notable difference was the balcony.

While Damien’s current room in Theo’s mansion had a simple balcony, this one opened up to a roof terrace.

He stepped outside briefly and saw a table set—complete with intricate carvings—placed there.

With the forest nearby, the atmosphere was serene and pleasant.

It seemed like the perfect spot to unwind with a cup of tea after a meal.

The room was still mostly unfurnished, but once decorated, it could easily become Theo’s room.

Although, considering its purpose as a guest room, it might make more sense to assign it to Augusto.

While Augusto was technically a guest, he was starting to feel more like family, at least in the long run.

Then again, Theo himself was unquestionably his family.

Damien decided he’d need to think carefully about how to allocate the rooms.

With the guest area explored, it was time to move on to the left wing of the second floor, where Damien’s private study and personal quarters were located.

"Let’s go in order from the front," Elyon said as he led the group. "First, we have the servants’ and guards’ waiting room."

Everyone followed Elyon as he explained, walking past the intricately carved pillars adorned with vines that marked the entrance to Damien’s private quarters.

And as they stepped through the threshold...

Augusto, who had been clinging to Damien’s arm, was suddenly pulled away, and at the same time, Thalatha, Sitta, Arba’a, and Tis’a surrounded him from all sides, drawing their short swords in a defensive stance.

Ithnan stood by himself, facing the opposite direction, with his own short sword drawn, glaring at the walls and ceiling.

What’s going on?

Damien quickly turned to look behind him, where Augusto had been pulled away.

Along with Augusto, Isaac and Miria, who had been following closely behind, were bound by vines that extended from a pillar, their hands and feet tied, and their mouths sealed.

In addition, although the vines weren’t tight, there was one wrapped around their necks as well.

"Elyon!?"

What in the world is happening!?
