Chapter 48: Heated Call

As the credits rolled, Averie breathed a sigh of relief.

’Finally, it is done.’

Asmodeus Binsfeld was no more.

Averie had given him life, and he had given him death. There was nothing more he could do. His story was over.

’The director did a wonderful job.’

Averie had acted well, but scenes like these required something far more than that. It required great direction.

No amount of brilliant acting was enough while filming a death scene. The atmosphere was very important.

This was one thing Averie knew could not be achieved through acting alone. It was regretful.

’If it were that easy, directors would be obsolete.’

Still, scenes like these made him appreciate the art of filmmaking.

Averie recalled his time as Asmodeus.

He had lived his life and felt his emotions. He had known him more closely than anyone else, and he wished he had done the man justice.

He wasn’t the most important character in BSPH, but Averie believed that he had lifted his status far more than any other actor ever could.

It was sad that he had to part ways with his first role in this new world, but it was a necessity. It was time to say goodbye to the Prince of Lust.

In some respects, it felt like a weight was lifted off of his shoulders.

But unlike him, Hyerin wasn’t prepared for farewells just yet.

She clutched Averie’s shirt sleeve tightly.

"Averie..." She sniffled. "They killed him, Averie..."

Her eyes were wet. She had been crying since when Asmodeus entered the mansion.

’Why are you crying? You knew this was going to happen. Hell, you were there when we filmed it.’

She clung to his arm, wailing relentlessly.

"They killed your character."

Averie was wondering how to keep her quiet when suddenly her phone rang.

"Mom? Did you watch it? Uh-huh..."

Her eyes, which had somewhat dried, began tearing again.

"They killed him, Mom," she cried, holding the phone with both hands. "They killed Averie!"

Averie spit out the water he was drinking.

’Son of bitch, I’m alive! Asmodeus is the dead one!’

Hyerin wasn’t the only one crying. On the other side of the call, her mother was shedding enough tears to fill a bucket.

In fact, everyone in their hometown was crying.

The yells of "My lord, they killed him!" could be heard everywhere.

Without Averie’s knowledge, his funeral was being held by the townspeople.

After a long bout of wailing and sniveling, Hyerin handed the phone to Averie.

"She wants to talk to you," she said, wiping her tears passionately.

There was pity in her eyes as she looked at him. It was as if she was looking at someone suffering from a terminal disease.

It was baffling to Averie.

’I wonder how she would react if I were to actually die.’

For a moment, he said nothing.

He had never met her mother. He didn’t even know what she looked like.

’How am I supposed to refer to her again?’

He cleared his throat and placed the phone to his ear.

"Hello?"

"They killed you, Averie dear," uttered Hyerin’s mother.

It made Averie’s ears buzz.

Both the mother and the daughter sounded exactly the same. It irked him.

The woman congratulated him and asked about his health.

Every two minutes, Averie would hear the voice of a man asking her to relay this and that. He presumed him to be Hyerin’s father.

Suddenly, another voice interrupted the call from the other side. It sounded much younger, and it wanted to talk.

"Hello, Averie?"

It was the voice of a teenage girl.

Averie assumed her to be a fan of his.

"Yes?" he smugly replied.

"What’s wrong with you?" the girl asked.

’What is wrong with me?’ Averie felt the Hellion inside of him awaken. ’Who the fuck are you?! I don’t even know you!’

He took a deep breath to calm himself.

Jaw clenched, he turned to Hyerin.

"Why is she mad?"

"You know how high schoolers are." She wiped her tears. "Ari has always been passionate."

At least, Averie knew her name now.

"Ari," he said, "who am I?"

"What? Have you lost it?"

"Who am I?"

"Averie—"

"No!" His voice contained force. "Who am I?"

"You—what? You are my cousin...?"

’Cousins. Got it.’ freeweɓnovel~cѳm

"Do you talk to your older cousin like that? Huh?"

The man was cunning. The bravado with which he yelled could have fooled anyone.

"Hey, Averie?" Ari called.

"Yeah?"

"Shut up!" she screamed. "I am mad as it is!"

Averie kept his mouth shut.

He was stunned and impressed. He did not know much about this Ari, but he was already proud of her. That crass way of speaking was just so beautiful to him.

Hell most certainly had a seat reserved for her. If not, he was willing to write a recommendation.

He could already picture her flipping him off.

"How could you do this to me?" Ari continued. "Why did you not inform me about this?"

"And what is this?"

"Why did you start acting? When did you start acting? How did you become so popular so quickly? Can I get autographs for my friends?"

"None of your business. Recently. I don’t know. And maybe—we’ll see."

"You should have told me about all the you-know-what stuff!"

"Rin said something, didn’t she?"

"Who knew it would be this bad? We thought there would be some blood, that’s all. I watched six episodes with my friends."

She groaned as if remembering something embarrassing.

"I was singing your praises, walking like I owned everything. I told everyone in my school that you are in it!"

’Ah, so she saw me dry-humping a redhead, did she? Delightful.’

"Do you know how embarrassed I was when the show began airing? All my friends were talking about you, and I felt disgusted every time they talked. Why do they fantasize about you? Screw that, why do they tell me about it? Are they dumb?"

’What beautiful friendship.’

"Every guy in the school now looks at me weird. I know what they think. They think I am the sister of a slut!"

’She is really making everything about herself, huh?’

Averie was truly proud.

Ari sounded exhausted. "Girls ask me for autographs. They bribe me to set them up with you! Can you believe these little shits?"

Averie, wise beyond his years, asked the most important question:

"You took the bribes, right? Please tell me you took the bribes."

"Do I look like an idiot? Of course, I took the bribes!"

’Good girl. Never refuse anything free.’

Averie knew a thing or two about that.

When he was little, a man in a white van offered to buy him an ice cream. He could have refused and avoided the danger, but did he? Of course not.

For some reason, Averie couldn’t remember much of that day.

’Where there is risk, there is reward.’

"Anyway," Ari added, "that was all fine with me. But Grandma saw everything too!"

’Shit! Is the hag alive?’

"She nearly had a heart attack every episode!"

’She continued to watch for six episodes? Is granny afraid of being left out?’

"She prays for your wellbeing! She has been doing some kind of ritual to cleanse you of your sins."

Averie nearly laughed.

His sins were numerous. There was no way an old woman was going to live long enough to cleanse them all.

"Do you know how scary it is to see her mutter her prayers every weekend? And she does it while watching you fool around with women on TV!"

’She is losing it, huh?’

"If that wasn’t bad enough, she saw your ass being murdered! You should have warned us!"

Half-excited and half-offended, she kept repeating, "How could you?"

"That was long," Hyerin commented once the call was over. "What was Ari saying?"

Averie looked at her.

"Grandma found religion apparently."
