Chapter 28: Special Exercise

May 8, Professor Yandri entered the classroom with a serious look on his face. My classmates, noticing his strange expression, quickly quieted down and took their seats.

"Good morning, class. I have an announcement to make regarding the special exercise."

Honestly, I wasn't surprised at all; I was actually becoming quite suspicious as to why it was taking so long to make this announcement.

"I'm sure you are all curious about what this special exam entails. You'll find the answers to most of your questions in these." Professor Yandri pulled out a stack of pamphlets from his work bag. "Sin, will you please hand these out for me?"

For a second, I couldn't believe he was requesting my help. I thought I misheard him and that he was calling for Finn instead. Realizing that wasn't the case, due to my classmates' stares, I got up from my seat and made my way to the teacher's podium where Professor Yandri was standing. I collected the stack of pamphlets and distributed them among the class making sure to take one for myself then headed back to my seat. I never expected him to call on me for help, especially since I was seated at the back of the class; usually, teachers would ask the more social students or those seated at the front.

I glanced at the pamphlet in my hand and saw the words printed in bright red: "Special Training Regimen."

"All first-year students, with the exception of one, will be required to take part in a special training regiment. This regimen will take place at Gloom-Sphere Mountain. The special exercise will last for eight days and will be conducted in groups of three. If you take a look at your pamphlets, you'll get a broader overview of the training regiment."

According to the pamphlet, this training regimen is mainly aimed at increasing physical abilities. The exercises we will undertake will focus on improving our physical strength, speed, stamina, coordination, reaction time, power, endurance, and agility. Students will be required to strictly follow the regimen put in place by the school.

As for our living conditions, we will have to camp in tents for the duration of the trip. The school will provide all the necessary items we will need. On the day the regiment begins, we will be handed a camping bag filled with essential items, which will include clothes, tents, a map, medical supplies, and various special items for the girls.

Note: There will be no food or water provided by the school. Students are required to take care of their own dietary needs, along with those of their group members.

Day 1: Each class will board their designated bus by 8 a.m. on the morning of the trip. The bus will take them to the foot of the mountain, where the students will be separated into their groups of three and ascend the mountain.

Students will be required to fulfill a set of duties called tasks. These tasks will differ from the training regimen the students must follow. Their first task will be to reach one of the designated camping areas located on the mountain.

The details of the training regimen will remain hidden until the school deems it necessary to inform the students. A detailed timetable will be given to each student on the morning of each day, outlining the regimen.

"I suggest you meet with your group members to discuss further. The training regimen will begin in two days. I also advise you to read the rules outlined in the pamphlet. You can use the remaining time to discuss things as a class before your next class begins. Sin, I would like to speak with you. Come with me."

Puzzled, I got up from my seat and followed Professor Yandri as he led me out of the classroom. As we walked down the hall, he finally spoke.

"So, Sin, I heard you're the class leader. I wasn't sure about it at first, but I heard that you stepped up and convinced the other students to partner with our class. Good job on that. However, you're still not acting like a leader; you have little to no presence in the class."

"I know I'm not really leadership material. I don't really know what to do."

"Just talk to them. That's why I gave you this chance. Go in there as a leader and let them know they can rely on you. You need to be the embodiment of strength, you need to be as perfect as possible. I know that's not the sorta thing you expect to hear from a teacher but its the best I can tell you. I'm sure your classmates are afraid of what will happen when Rizor gets back and of the upcoming training regimen. Be their pillar of support, Sin."

A pillar of support? Can I really be that for them? I have no idea how to be a good leader. Will the things I've learned so far be enough? I was filled with questions, doubt, and a little fear about what was to come. Yet, this is an opportunity to change; I have to be better than I am now.

Professor Yandri stopped and placed his hand on my shoulder.

"I'm sure you'll do an excellent job as leader."

"Thank you, sir. I'll do my best."

After that, I returned to my classroom. My classmates were gathered around Finn and Sarah, discussing something. Instead of going back to my seat, I walked up to the teacher's podium. Sarah made eye contact with me and then gestured for the other students surrounding her to look in my direction.

From the podium, I had a view of my classmates' puzzled faces. I was sure they didn't know what to expect, and neither did I. I had no clue what I was doing. Should I mimic Nina or Lucifer? Which personality would get the job done better? What even is the job? What's the point of all of this? What did I expect?

I want to be better than I am now; I want to be content with the person I will become. So many years have passed, and I'm still someone else's dog. I want my own identity dammit!!

"For the last few days, I've been a terrible leader, and I'd like to apologize," I started by bowing my head to the class to show how sincere I was. "I'm sure you all are worried about what's to come, but you don't have to be. If we face things as a class, then I'm sure everything will be fine. No, I will make sure things turn out fine. If any of you need help at all, I want you to come to me. And if you're not comfortable with that, you can talk to Sarah. As your leader, I'll make it my job to protect each and every one of you. You don't have to be afraid anymore."
