Hellbound: Rebirth Of The Strongest Slayer.-Chapter 50: Guardian angel
Chapter 50
GOD DAMN IT.
Is this really how a baby is supposed to live his life?
Rayden questioned it in his mind, but there was no one there to answer him. Of course there wouldn’t be. What did he expect? He was cursed. That much was clear. Cursed by that accursed hell.
Vastro groaned internally, feeling like he was finally pushing the hell realm to the top of his hit list. Drakkon must die would always remain number one, but hell had officially secured second place. Not that any of that helped him right now.
The snake hissed louder, its head swaying side to side as if wondering how sweet he would taste once it swallowed him whole.
Hey moron. If you really knew who I am, you would drop me right now.
The outrage burned inside him as he thought it, but reality was cruel. He was still a baby. Only a few months old. He couldn’t speak. His threat came out as nothing but adorable baby babble, wet and useless and absolutely not intimidating to anyone.
The snake hissed again, sharper this time. It coiled, muscles tightening, clearly ready to lunge.
Rayden let out a cry. A deep, desperate baby cry. Almost calculated.
He was betting on pity. Betting the snake would hesitate. Betting it would drop him instead of going through with its idiotic plan of eating him alive.
After all, what was more adorable than a baby? And what was even more adorable than that? A crying baby like himself.
Cold blooded or not, the snake should feel something. It should hesitate.
It didn’t.
The hiss came louder, uglier. The head shifted, angling just right for a clean bite. A perfect meal.
Damn bastard. Of course it wanted to eat him.
Whose fault was it that he was so attractive anyway?
Then something changed.
The worry vanished from baby Vastro’s face. The fear drained away, replaced by something disturbingly calm. Confident.
Slowly, a smile spread across his tiny face.
And no, that wasn’t wrong.
Of course he wasn’t scared of the snake. Why should he be? That cry from before was never meant to stop it. It was a signal.
A call. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
To his guardian angels.
Angels.
The word felt strange. Wrong. Especially coming from him. After all, he had almost led the angel race into extinction over a small disagreement with their lord. He had restrained himself in the end, but that didn’t change the outcome. Their decline still echoed to this very day.
So guardian angel felt like a lie.
Vastro pushed the guilt away.
This human vessel was making him too sensitive. Too emotional.
Whatever.
The snake still had no idea what was coming.
It lunged.
Fast. Its mouth stretched wide, fangs flashing as it aimed straight for the baby’s head.
Then it stopped.
Something sharp and thick wrapped around the snake’s neck and yanked it violently to the side. Scales scraped dirt as it screeched, startled, confused.
Before it could even react, a figure flashed past.
Two silver streaks cut through the air. Fast. Clean. Deadly.
The snake never even registered its own death.
Its head hit the ground with a dull thud.
Selene grabbed her son instantly. Her hands trembled as she checked him over, searching for blood, for wounds, for anything wrong.
There was nothing.
He was perfectly fine.
Too fine.
Selene exhaled in relief, pulling him close. She didn’t notice the way his small fingers clenched. She didn’t see the faint glow flicker behind his innocent eyes.
"Are you alright?" Selene asked.
Even though there wasn’t a single visible wound on him, she still couldn’t stop herself.
Rayden smiled.
Of course he was alright. He had two bad ass protectors. Why wouldn’t he be?
Honestly, after surviving yet another ridiculous near death situation and narrowly escaping becoming snake food, Vastro felt a completely different urge.
He wanted to eat the snake.
So he pointed at it, tiny finger stretched out, eyes bright. He really wanted to taste that fool’s meat.
Selene misunderstood him immediately.
"I know. We shouldn’t have left you here all alone," she said softly. "But don’t worry now. Mom is here. Everything will be safe."
Vastro facepalmed internally.
He sincerely could not wait to grow up. The things he was going to say to this woman. The lectures. The complaints. The screaming.
Wait. Why are you removing me from the setting?
Before he could mentally protest further, another voice cut in.
"Hey. Rayden. Father is here as well."
Callack smiled as he spoke, holding the severed snake head in his grip like it was nothing.
Vastro facepalmed again.
When he was strong enough, he really needed to see what he could do to this little man. Maybe a little beating was in order. Just a little.
"This is enough meat to feed us for some days," Callack said, still smiling.
And he was right.
That night, the trio ate well. Snake meat roasted and shared beneath the trees.
Well, all except Vastro.
His teeth were only just starting to grow. Too weak. Too useless to tear into meat. All he could do was stare in misery at the food he desperately wanted to taste.
Pathetic.
Still, not all hope was lost. As long as he survived and grew up, he would eat as much meat as he wanted. Mountains of it.
For now, he was stuck with divine milk provided by his mom.
The night passed without incident.
Then days passed.
Callack kept trying to find a human settlement. He failed every time.
Then one morning, Vastro woke up to movement.
Selene was packing.
Gathering the few belongings they had. The scraps they had scavenged together.
Something was wrong.
He could feel it.
Danger.
He didn’t know how he knew. His instincts stirred, sharp and uneasy, screaming that something bad was about to happen.
"Come on. Be fast," Selene said, her voice tight. "This worrying feeling is growing stronger."
She hurried Callack.
He didn’t know what was giving Selene the creeps, but he didn’t want to find out the hard way. Over the weeks, she had grown stronger. Not on his level, but her instincts were far better than his.
So he listened.
A few minutes later, they were done.
They carried Vastro and moved out immediately.
And as fate would have it, only a few minutes after they left, the great boar returned.
The one that once ruled this forest.
It was heavily wounded. Blood stained its hide. But even in that weakened state, it could have casually slaughtered them all with a single charge.
A guaranteed kill.
The family had unknowingly survived certain death.
All thanks to Selene’s instincts.
