Chapter 40: Chapter 35 Echo of History, Activate!

The soft glow of the magictech lamp illuminated Shiayar’s eyes.

He sat at his desk, calmly writing with a steel pen.

"...In the Ashes Cult’s Fire Sacrifice incident, I broke through the 3-Ring bottleneck, initiating my 3rd Soul Pact."

"At the same time, by a fortunate coincidence, Silver turned a piece of contamination from the Ashes Cult to her advantage and mastered In Control over the Lord of Ashes’ Black Flame."

"This incident took place within St. Roland Academy and caused quite a commotion. Some astute individuals might notice my connections with the Black Tower and with you."

"However, given the Black Tower’s status and your identity within it, even if they intend to spin some narratives, it’s unlikely they’ll act overtly."

Shiayar paused, refilled his pen with ink, and then resumed writing.

"Shiny’s and Silver’s attributes are both quite specialized. Although they can compensate for weaknesses in various ways, their ability to endure damage in head-on battles is not their strong suit."

"Therefore, for my 3rd Soul Pact, I plan to choose a Pet Beast skilled in direct combat, especially physical combat."

"Currently, my Pet Beasts’ abilities tend to lean more towards Rule-type, revealing a weakness in situations that require pure strength."

"Of course, when Ennie is present, this weakness can instantly turn into a strength. But as you’ve said... no one can defeat a Black Tower Wizard armed to the teeth, and a competent Beastmaster should not overly rely on the help of others."

"My current preferred choice for the 3rd Soul Pact is the Hill Giants Tribe. I’ve heard that one of your colleagues—a Legendary of the Dwarf Race from the Black Tower’s 8th Page, known by the title ’Thunder’—has a Storm Giant Emperor as one of his main combat Pet Beasts. This Storm Giant Emperor evolved from a Hill Giant."

"However, the Hill Giants Tribe has a complete societal structure. Their young are well-protected and often only enter contracts with Beastmasters upon reaching adulthood. This conflicts with my philosophy of nurturing Pet Beasts from a young age."

Shiayar stopped writing, hesitated for a moment, and then added a few more lines.

"Additionally, during my recent archaeological research, I discovered some clues about the ancient Azure Garden Dukedom."

"This is a kingdom that perished hundreds of years ago. According to the clues I obtained, its downfall seems to be related to an Evil God known as Dusk."

"This event took place during the Calamity Land era and is likely linked to the construction of the White Chalk Tower."

"To my knowledge, the Black Tower also underwent significant changes during the Calamity Land era, with more than one member of the 8th Page falling as a result. Therefore, I thought you might be interested in this information and in that lost period of history."

"Your student, Shiayar Egutt."

After signing off, Shiayar checked the letter once more, then folded the paper.

He took out three Rhine gold coins from the drawer under his desk and placed them on top of the folded paper.

Then, Shiayar calmly uttered, "Hathaway."

"Hathaway."

Shiayar paused slightly and repeated the name for the third time. "Hathaway."

After a moment’s breath, ripples stirred in the still room.

Within Shiayar’s spiritual perception, a strange sensation of being watched suddenly arose.

It did not originate from the material plane; that gaze was higher and farther, seemingly able to disregard spatial coordinates and the barriers of planes and dimensions, projecting directly onto Shiayar himself.

The next moment, that sense of being observed slowly faded away.

And before Shiayar’s eyes, the folded piece of paper, along with the three Rhine gold coins on it—

vanished in the blink of an eye, as if they had never existed in this world.

Such a scene, if witnessed by most commoners or even Low Order Beastmasters, would be deemed an incomprehensible miracle.

But Shiayar, who knew the truth, was unsurprised.

This was a skill possessed by a Space-type Pet Beast under the command of his master, a Legendary Golden Elf of the Black Tower.

The three Rhine gold coins could be roughly considered the summoning fee it required.

It was precisely because he had witnessed the impressive capabilities of a High Order Space-type Pet Beast that Shiayar had spared no effort to guide Shiny toward developing Space-type abilities.

It couldn’t be helped. Even though the initial investment was significant and progress slow, once trained to its full potential, the Space-type’s upper limits were indeed high. It was a pure conceptual deity, far beyond the level of those that could merely spit fire or water.

Of course, even though the letter had been sent, Shiayar had no expectation of receiving a reply anytime soon.

His master was famously capricious and her whereabouts unpredictable; often, even her own Pet Beast couldn’t find her.

Furthermore, the lifespan of the advanced Elf Tribe was exceedingly long, giving them a concept of time vastly different from that of ordinary Humans. Spending a decade or two on a dimensional journey was a common occurrence for them.

Ever since Shiayar had left the Arcane Arts City Lokiya, he had not seen his master again. She might still be wandering through some dimensional crack or The Void.

Therefore, these letters, for Shiayar, were less about making contact and more like a habit, or perhaps a diary.

BOOM! BOOM!

From the nearby Pet Beast training room, a moderate explosion could be heard.

Immediately after, Shiayar sensed the unmistakable joy that Shiny conveyed through their Soul Pact.

The next moment, a snub-nosed monkey, covered in dust and grime, flashed onto Shiayar’s shoulder.

The little snub-nosed monkey was quickly grabbed by Shiayar with a look of distaste and tossed into a nearby basin of water.

But even as Shiayar held her under the water to clean her, excitement was still evident on Shiny’s face.

"CHITTER CHITTER CHITTER (Master! Master!)"

"CHITTER CHITTER CHITTER (I’ve done it! I’ve mastered it!)"

"I know you’ve mastered it, well done," Shiayar nodded.

In his mind, lines of azure prompts slowly appeared.

[Shiny’s Low Order passive Skill "Explosion Resistance" has reached the proficiency level of "Perfection"]

[Shiny’s Low Order Skill "Fling" has reached the proficiency level of "Perfection"]

[Current remaining Classless Experience Points: 10,340]

Pet Beast Skills were divided into inherent racial Skills and those acquired through learning.

For High Order Skills like "Moon Reading" and "Amaterasu," which lacked real-world prototypes, learning them required a Skill Seed. It also involved the complicated process of fleshing out the skill blueprints.

But for common mid to Low Order Skills, as long as the Pet Beast’s compatibility wasn’t too poor (unlike, say, forcibly teaching a flame rat to use Surf), most could be acquired through training.

For instance, to master "Explosion Resistance" and "Fling," Shiny endured hundreds of blasts and threw thousands of stones at a target before achieving mastery.

Theoretically, investing too many Experience Points in these two unremarkable, common Low Order Skills might seem wasteful. After all, Shiayar didn’t even allocate points to Silver’s infrequently used Skills like "Ripping Claws" and "Ice Blade."

But at this moment, Shiny was full of confidence in her newly mastered abilities.

"CHITTER CHITTER CHITTER! (Big sis, if we get into a fight next time, please let me have the first opponent!)"

On Shiayar’s shoulder, the little white ferret wordlessly flicked her tail upon hearing Shiny’s confident chirps.

"SQUEAK~ (As if I would steal your kills.)"

Lifting Shiny from the basin and drying her with a towel, Shiayar asked, "How about it? Do you need a break?"

"CHITTER CHITTER, CHITTER! (No need, Master! I’m in great shape right now!)"

Shiny’s voice was still full of energy, clearly eager to try out her new abilities.

"That’s good then," Shiayar said, placing Shiny back on his shoulder.

He gazed at the still-silent meditation room nearby. After a moment’s contemplation, he entered the second-floor washroom.

Then, he locked the brass lock on the washroom door.

As Shiayar’s mind touched the twisted space-time sigil deep within his Soul, everything around him froze in an instant.

Once again, he entered the "Echo of History."
