Chapter 204: What do you expect me to do?

"What are you doing, Chanchan?"

Ruan Chanchan paused and turned to look at the mer who was heading inside, softly smiling at him. She said to him, "Nothing I was planning to arrange a scout team for myself. I don’t want to trouble the scout team all the time."

Although she didn’t say anything directly, Xie Daiyu knew she was upset with the scout team’s attitude.

He nodded and said to Ruan Chanchan, "Alright, if that’s what you want, then I can ask some of the hunters to follow you."

However, as soon as he finished speaking, Ruan Chanchan shook her head. She said to him, "I don’t need the hunters from your team to follow me. I was thinking that I should arrange for the disabled orcs to follow me. Maybe they will be able to do a much better job this way?" 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"You can arrange things as you want." Xie Daiyu had nothing against this. Thinking of the disabled orcs in the tribe Xie Daiyu was in a bad mood. These people lived a pathetic life and were no different from the dead.

In fact, it would not be wrong to say that they live a life that is no different from being dead. Because they were incapable of hunting, they would take the initiative to commit suicide. Xie Daiyu felt upset when he thought about how these people lost their lives because of their incompetence.

If he were strong enough then he could have created a much better space for himself and the rest of the tribe. He could have at least given enough food to the tribe members such that they wouldn’t suffer due to starvation.

But he couldn’t because he was not strong enough. It was all because of his weakness and incompetence that he couldn’t defeat those bustards from the black snake tribe.

Xie Daiyu clenched his fists in anger. If only he had the strength to defeat those jerks then maybe...Just maybe he could have saved so many lives.

"I think there are too many orcs who lost their totems. We can separate them into two teams. We will send those who can still fight to the front, while the rest will stay behind. The weak will stay behind, and in case something happens, they will be in charge of calling the totem warriors."

Xie Daiyu thought that what Ruan Chanchan said made sense. If they could give jobs to these crippled orcs they would be able to help them survive through the winter.

As long as they had enough to eat their fill, they would never think of killing themselves.

Xie Daiyu didn’t waste his time and immediately relayed the message to his mother who immediately called the crippled orcs to her cave and asked them to start working as soon as possible.

Ruan Chanchan even asked them to start rice farming. With these many people trying to cultivate the land it was only a matter of time for rice to grow in the paddies.

Of course, when these people heard that they could work and earn their keep, they were so excited that they danced.

Because of their injuries, they were not allowed to leave the tribe as they couldn’t hunt, and no one wanted to use them either. But if Ruan Chanchan were to use them, he was sure that no one would have an issue with it.

Now that the crippled orcs had work, maybe they would no longer worry about eating the share of the children or killing themselves in the winter.

Once the matter was settled the crippled orcs spontaneously created teams. There were no fixed members in each team, and Ruan Chanchan had no desire to change it either.

Rather than making them work with people they were not comfortable with. It was better that they worked with people with whom they were comfortable.

She also wanted to go with them but couldn’t because Xie Daiyu didn’t allow her to. When two people imprint on one another, the strongest one goes out to hunt.

Since Ruan Chanchan didn’t have a totem core, it didn’t make sense for her to go out and hunt. What if she ran into trouble when she was out? What would he do then?

It was better if she stayed with the tribe.

When Ruan Chanchan heard his response, she pursed her lips but didn’t rush to contradict him. Even though he didn’t say it outright, Ruan Chanchan knew that he was only looking out for her. Her totem core was broken, and even if she wanted to, she couldn’t have fought with the beasts if she wanted to.

Since she knew that she was like a baby in the beast world, why would she even insist on going out and causing trouble for others?

Moreover; she was a little bit tired and wanted to go back to her cave and rest.

She nodded and was about to leave when Chief Xie came running. She looked at Ruan Chanchan and asked with a sheepish smile on her lips, "Were you going to rest?"

I was but how am I supposed to say that when you are looking at me like that? Ruan Chanchan’s mind was running with all kinds of thoughts but she couldn’t say anything. She pursed her lips and simply smiled at Chief Xie before saying to her, "Not at all. What do you want to say to me?"

Chief Xie knew that Ruan Chanchan was lying, but she still held back the words- If you are tired, go to sleep and said to her, "There is something that I want to talk to you about. Can you come with me?"

Ruan Chanchan nodded and followed Chief Xie silently. The two of them walked all the way to the Xie family cave. Chief Xie continuously looked at Ruan Chanchan while walking to her cave.

Ruan Chanchan tried her best to ignore the gazes that were aimed at her, but when she couldn’t, she turned to look at the woman walking next to her and asked, "Is there something that you want to say to me?"

Chief Xie rubbed her hands together when she heard Ruan Chanchan’s question. She smiled and said to her, "Chanchan, Daiyu talked with me last night. He told me that you were blessed by the beast goddess. It seemed like the beast goddess gave you a lot of wisdom. I was thinking if you could teach a little something to our tribe members..not everything, just enough for them to identify edible crops."

Ruan Chanchan stiffened when she heard Chief Xie’s request. She pursed her lips and said to Chief Xie, "Are you sure you want me to teach the tribe members? Will they even trust me?"

Ruan Chanchan knew how much the tribe wanted to kick her out of the tribe. How could they even agree to learn from her? They would look at her as if she were a big bad wolf who could kill them at the smallest mistake.

"There are indeed some who have qualms about your presence in the tribe, but anyway, there is no such thing as being liked by everyone. You are not a bone coin." Chief Xie curled her lips into a sheepish smile, but Ruan Chanchan didn’t say anything and simply stared at the woman. She wanted to see what the woman was trying to tell her.

Seeing that Ruan Chanchan was not amused by her jokes, Chief Xie cleared her throat. She said to Ruan Chanchan, "Anyway what I wanted to say was that there is no need for you to worry about your popularity in the tribe. When I took over more than 70 people in the tribe were against me. The reasons were simple, I was too soft-hearted. They believed that I would never be able to lead the tribe."

After she finished speaking, Chief Xie smiled mockingly. "Well, they were indeed correct, but did I let them shake me with their stupid beliefs? No."

"I listened to all but tried to do what I thought was right–"

"And you couldn’t do that either."

Ruan Chanchan’s remark was met with a thousand-yard stare as Chief Xie pursed her lips and agreed. "Well you are indeed correct about that as well but there was no need for you to point it out so bluntly." she sighed and then said, "Anyway, there is one thing that I want to tell you ...people will keep hating you for being different but there is no need for you to worry about them all the time."

"Trust in yourself just like some of the tribe members trust in you."

"They trust me? Are you sure you are talking about me?"

"Of course why won’t they trust you? You have done so much for the tribe by bringing so many crops and fruits that we can eat in winter. How could they not trust you?" said Chief Xie with a smile.
