Chapter 200: Changing buds

The two of them rushed to pat her on the back.

"Are you okay?"

"Chanchan, do you want to drink water?"

The two mers were in panic, worried that maybe something had happened to Ruan Chanchan. As for Ruan Chanchan, she was currently trying her best to calm down the burning sensation in the back of her throat. She swallowed a few times before saying, "I am fine; there is no need for you to worry." She then turned to look at Xie Daiyu and tried to speak in a voice that was neither too blaming nor accusatory. "This is just a small thing. These are the blessings given to the tribe by the beast goddess. So you can do anything with it as long as you are not deliberately wasting it."

Though Ruan Chanchan was not someone who cared about little things, she was still a firm believer in not wasting even the smallest bite of food. Anyway, she came here to teach this tribe and the beast world how to live their lives properly, like upright and modest human beings.

Since that was the case, she was certainly going to teach them all the right things!

Xie Daiyu sighed in relief and then happily scooped a bowl of instant noodles that Ruan Chanchan had made for Ruan Zeqiu; of course, he met with a harsh glare, but who cared about the anger of that little mer when he had delicious food to eat in front of him?

He ignored the mer just as easily as he ignored the air around him. He took a bite of the instant noodles, and his eyes lit up. He turned to look at Ruan Chanchan and then asked her, "Is there something different about the meat?"

When Ruan Chanchan heard his question, she could not help but beam happily. Sure enough, this mer was a true foodie; he actually saw through such a subtle change without wasting a single second.

"This is spicy bacon, do you like it?" Ruan Chanchan didn’t want to make bacon at first. Because bacon made from salt alone was not tasty enough. She only taught it to the people of the tribe because they had no other options, but with these crimson fire fruits, Ruan Chanchan realised how easy it was for her to change the taste buds of the entire tribe once again.

She didn’t have the time to make the spicy bacon, but she could always whip something out from the supermarket and popularise it.

"You mean to say that we can make this bacon with the help of the crimson fruits?" Xie Daiyu asked with his eyes alight with a greedy glint that only a true foodie could have.

Ruan Chanchan nodded without blushing. Even if the spicy bacon was from her supermarket, she didn’t believe that there was anything wrong with what she said; after all, the spicy bacon she was going to make would be no different from this one.

"Then I will ask the people of the tribe to collect the innards." Xie Daiyu happily agreed with Ruan Chanchan. He knew that Ruan Chanchan was really good, and her ideas were just as good. He was happy with Ruan Chanchan alone, who was not only smart but also quite witty when it came to many things. "At night, I will ask the processing team to take it out of the intestines of the beasts and hand it over to the cooking team."

The processing team absolutely refused to take in any more people in their team. And even when their chief put a foot down, they refused vehemently. The leader of the processing team simply stated that it was an insult to their work. They were doing serious hard work that required a lot of strength and power; could the weak elderly and the feeble orphans, whom no one wanted because of their weak beast forms, be able to do anything while dealing with the unprocessed meat?

Since that was not the case, why should they allow them to work with their team? It was similar to asking little ants to carry a giant three-tusked serpent on their backs. It was a waste of both time and their efforts. So why do something that was bound only to drag them down? And when forced, they simply stated that they were going to leave the tribe, as they took their work very seriously and wouldn’t do anything that would make them look bad.

In the end, one of the elderly suggested that they were fine being in charge of just cooking and that there was no need for them to join the processing team. And that was how the team that was supposed to be working with the processing team ended up becoming the cooking team. Now the two teams were working separately, and from the looks of it, neither of them was even close to forgiving one another.

"Sure, go ahead."

In the afternoon, Xie Daiyu relayed the good news to his mother before heading out to hunt and look for the linen plant. While he went to hunt, Ruan Chanchan spent her time cleaning the cave and studying more about the faith energy. Her brows were slightly furrowed as she looked at the amount of faith energy that she had collected and questioned Xiao Xi, "Is this enough for me to start cultivating?"

"Indeed." Xiao Xi bobbed his ball-like head and stated in a cheerful voice, "It’s better to start cultivating little by little or else you will end up storing too much faith energy and your totem core might explode due to the immense pressure it might put on it. So you’d better start cultivating slowly, such that your totem remains intact when it starts recovering."

Ruan Chanchan pursed her lips and then asked, "And how much is the cost of this cultivation pack?"

"It’s not that expensive – just one thousand points."

Ruan Chanchan: "..."

Sighing, Ruan Chanchan placed the matter of cultivation back down for a few days and returned her attention to the tribe members who came to look for her because of what happened a few days ago to Yuan Ni; everyone was still scared of eating the mushrooms without confirming with Ruan Chanchan. Some would double-check it with her, even when she told them that the mushrooms were safe to eat.

Ruan Chanchan felt like her workload had increased.

And she couldn’t help but think that maybe she dropped the axe on her foot with her own hands. Maybe she should have taught this knowledge to someone else instead of taking it into her own hands. While Ruan Chanchan was worried due to her inability to deal with the overly cautious tribe members, Chief Xie was more than happy to have more food for the tribe. Xie Daiyu had sent a lot of things that could be eaten by the tribe. The moon nuts that Ruan Chanchan sent were loved by everyone in the tribe. The mers loved eating the sweet fruits, and even the picky cubs were willing to eat them. Chief Xie truly loved this sudden surprise. As long as there was something good for them to eat.

She had already noted down the appearance of the moon nuts and told the members of the tribe to collect them as soon as they found them; these fruits were really good, and they couldn’t let some other tribe get them before their tribe.

In addition, she also wanted to see if these fruits could be stored for a long time. And there were many tribe members who were willing to go out and grow rice in the paddy that Ruan Chanchan had found. With the collection of mushrooms and the bamboo shoots that Ruan Chanchan had brought for them, Chief Xie finally saw some hope for the survival of the tribe.

Even if these things would no longer be fresh in the winter, it was better than having nothing. With them dried and cooked, other than the slight change in the taste and the disappearance of freshness, there were no other changes. Chief Xie looked at the people who were standing in front of Ruan Chanchan, waiting for her to tell them which mushrooms could be considered edible and which were not and nodded. This task of collecting mushrooms had not only given hope to the tribe for the winter, but it had also given jobs to the orphans, elderly and crippled who were so weak that if they ventured out of the territory, they would become easy prey in the hands of the predator.

These people had no means to hunt down their predator and would lose their lives if they were to leave the tribe.

They were considered nothing but the trash of the tribe. After all, in the eyes of some elders and the older members of the tribe, people who didn’t have any beast core shouldn’t even be alive. It was due to these actions of the tribe members that many of the female orcs decided to end their lives. As neither of them could accept their incompetence. And they chose to commit suicide because it was better than getting humiliated every day. Ruan Chanchan had given people like them a new hope, as they could now survive without worrying about what others would think of them.
