The peace of the previous night, walking hand in hand with Emma, felt like a lifetime ago. The moment I stepped back into the training ground the next morning, the mountain was there again, vast and imposing. But something was different.
The air, usually thick with the low-grade anxiety of a relegation battle, was clear. The sun was shining, and the sound of laughter echoed from the training pitch. "Understood," she said. We stood in comfortable silence for a few more minutes, watching the players, our players, enjoying the fruits of their labor. It was a good feeling. But my mind was already elsewhere. The present was safe. The future was a war that had to be won.
