Global Awakening: Apocalypse Ender's Chronicle-Chapter 578: Reinforcement
Gene stood atop the outer wall of the Eclipse Domain.
At this time, his rifle was over his shoulder as he scanned the horizon.
They just felt the rumble on the ground and knew that there was a horde coming at them.
At first, he thought it was just another small zombie wave—something they could handle easily. But as the roars grew louder, he immediately knew that the Zombies coming at them were not just a few hundred…
There must be thousands of them!
"Zombie Wave!" a scout shouted before the bell rang, alarming everyone in the shelter to be prepared.
Gene held his rifle tightly as he felt a little nervous. After all, there were several towering Zombies behind them! The Zombie Waves he had experienced in the Springriver Manor wasn't this serious at all.
Furthermore, Shane wasn't here!
As they grew closer, he noticed the Spitter Zombies with bloated, acidic sacs, Jumper Zombies with unnaturally long limbs, and muscular Tyrant Zombies behind the wave of Runner Zombies.
Then, on their side, he saw Crypt Crawlers moving on all fours… These Zombies that should be staying in their caves were actually out here hunting for Zombies.
But what truly made Gene's blood run cold was the existence of numerous Giant Zombies.
Maybe having two or three of them would be acceptable but seeing about a dozen of them at once was definitely terrifying.
These monstrosities stood nearly three stories tall, their massive bodies seemed impervious to bullets and it would certainly be difficult to bring them down.
"Everyone to their positions!" Lucas' voice echoed.
Gene immediately joined the other defenders on the wall.
The automated turrets started firing, unleashing a torrent of bullets into the advancing zombie horde.
Then, Flamethrowers mounted along the walls suddenly started spewing fire that engulfed the frontlines of the undead.
Soon, he heard someone shout.
"Focus fire on the Giants!"
It happened so quickly. The Giant Zombies arrived in no time!
"Kill!" Gene shouted and it was barely audible due to the sound of gunfire and explosions.
The snipers took their aim as they focused on the eyes or the faces of the Giant Zombies.
After all, they have thick hide and they were hoping that the Giant Zombies' eyes would be more vulnerable.
For a moment, it seemed like they might hold the line. One of the Giants stumbled, its knee buckling under the concentrated fire.
But then, with a deafening roar, the Giant Zombie moved forward, its massive hands slammed into the outer wall.
CRACK!
The impact sent shockwaves through the structure, and Gene nearly lost his footing.
He then realized that they had been protected. However, he watched in shock as cracks spiderwebbed across the barrier, the energy field was also flickering as if it was about to disappear!
This barrier wouldn't last long at all!
"The barrier's failing!" someone yelled.
Gene gritted his teeth as he reloaded his rifle immediately.
"We can't let them breach! Keep firing!"
The defenders redoubled their efforts as they poured everything they had into the fight.
Grenades rained down from the walls as their explosions destroyed the ranks of the undead coming at them...
They also used upgraded Molotov cocktails as they were thrown through the air, creating walls of fire that slowed the horde's advance. But it wasn't enough.
One by one, the Giant Zombies reached the wall as the barrier started to fail.
The energy field flickered and soon, it was unable to withstand their assault.
With a loud crash, the barrier shattered, and the translucent blue dome dissolved into nothingness!
"The wall! They're breaking through!"
Gene's heart raced as he watched the first Giant Zombie grab the edge of the wall, its huge and rotten fingers dug into the reinforced concrete so easily!
Crack… Crack…
The structure groaned under the strain, and with a crunch, a section of the wall collapsed, sending defenders tumbling around.
"Fall back to the inner wall!" Diana's voice was heard by everyone and this order to retreat made them feel relieved. They also felt thankful for the fact that they actually had another layer of defense to fall to.
Gene didn't need to be told twice.
He turned and ran, joining the stream of defenders retreating to the secondary defenses.
The inner wall was their last line of defense, a smaller but more fortified structure designed to hold against a larger horde...
Of course, if they did this, a huge part of the business district and a small part of the residential area might be destroyed.
However, they had to do this if they wanted to control the situation.
As he sprinted across the courtyard, he could hear the screams of those who hadn't made it in time, many other survivors were caught by the Zombies.
They activated their safety tokens and other items, saving them temporarily. However, once it ran out, they would be completely at the mercy of the Zombies.
Thankfully, with all those Skill-Infused Tokens that Shane had provided to all defenders, they were able to retreat on time with just a few casualties.
Thud!
The gates of the inner wall slammed shut behind them, the heavy steel doors were reinforced and should not be destroyed easily.
Furthermore, there's another set of barriers that had been arranged here.
Gene heaved a sigh of relief after confirming that the gate was closed.

Around him, the survivors looked battered but they all weren't losing hope. They knew that they hadn't done everything they could do just yet.
After all, even if the outer was breached, they could hear the Automated Turrets outside still firing bullets!
Perhaps half of them were already destroyed but they were still killing numerous Zombies and it wouldn't end any time soon since they had power cores that could last them hours!
They had lost the outer wall, but they weren't defeated—not yet.

In the command center, a group of people were monitoring the situation very carefully.
As soon as they confirmed that they had eliminated half of the Giant Zombies, Diana felt a bit satisfied but it was still too slow.
"Report the damages." Diana asked.
"The north's outer wall is gone…" Edwin said.
"Twenty turrets are down, and we've lost most of our flamethrowers. But the inner wall is holding—for now. Our new Turrets are already eliminating most of the small Zombies."
Diana nodded calmly. She was actually communicating with someone else right now. To be exact, she talking to some people in the Springriver Manor!
After getting a satisfying reply, Diana smiled.
"Alright… We knew this might happen. We have plans for this. Let Captain Flint and Lucas command the front lines. Tell them that reinforcements will be coming soon."

At this time, Gene was already atop the walls, helping the defenders… It was truly a pity that most of the high-ranking Survivors weren't here. If they were, these Giant Zombies would surely not be a problem for them.
Soon, the defenders on the inner wall opened fire.
Bullets were still cutting down the number of zombies that tried to follow the retreat.
But the Giants were another matter.
They have thick hides that shrugged off most of the gunfire, and their sheer size made them nearly impossible to stop.
"Bring out the heavy artillery!" someone shouted.
From the inner wall, massive cannons emerged, they had barrels glowing with blue energy.
Boom!
With a deafening blast, they fired!
The projectiles slammed into the Giants!
Thud! Thud! Thud!
One of the Giants staggered, its chest caved in, but it didn't fall. Instead, its hands tried reaching for the inner wall.
"We can't stop them!" A guard cried as he started to feel really pressured.
They were running out of options. Diana had to bring out their other plans to defend this Domain!
Thankfully, a sound echoed throughout the whole domain.
The guards atop the wall soon remembered the contingency plans that had been arranged for their defense in emergency situations... At this time, they finally recalled that they weren't just defending the Domain—they were buying time.
The traps must be activated soon!
Indeed, just moments later, the ground outside the outer wall erupted in a series of explosions.
Hidden landmines and buried explosives tore through the horde!
Then, outside the inner wall, a series of Energy Waves was released!
Boom!
It was Shane's Energy Wave Skill that he had infused on the Automated Turrets!
With the Energy Waves activated, the Giant Zombies stumbled and crashed numerous smaller Zombies on the ground!
Bam!
"Now, the flamethrowers!" Diana commanded.
From hidden compartments along the inner wall, a new wave of flamethrowers emerged!
For a moment, it seemed like they might turn the tide. But then, a black Tyrant Zombie Leader broke through the flames!
It was about to destroy the inner wall's barrier!
CRASH!
The impact shook the entire barrier and everyone felt the ground beneath him tremble.
A few more strikes might destroy this barrier…
"We can't hold them much longer!" Gene was worried...
However, as the black Tyrant Zombie Leader was about to attack once again, a familiar wave of energy spread throughout the ranks of the Defenders…
Clank!
Just before the Zombie could attack again, a figure wielding two swords stopped it!
"Shinja!"
