Chapter 141: Chapter 141: Talented Daughter?

Instead of entering right away, Lana observed the high-end tower from a distance.

She realized that even though the tower didn’t have any aura like the previous villas or houses she had seen, it had a strange kind of eerie calmness, as if it was hiding something.

Lana suppressed the odd instinct that suddenly rose in her heart and entered the tower.

Once inside, she was stopped by a guard who looked at her with a blank expression and asked,

"What are you doing here?" Lana’s eyes briefly fell on the man’s missing arm before she quickly looked away.

She explained, "I was invited by a mission issuer named Ezra, and I belong to Shadowridge University and am here to execute the mission."

In her heart, she grumbled as to why the man hadn’t informed the guard about her arrival. It was the most basic gesture!

The guard asked, "Your identity card?"

Though he asked so, there were doubts lingering in his eyes, which couldn’t be even more apparent!

When Lana handed it to him, his entire demeanor changed.

The indifference in his eyes softened into respect and admiration. He returned the card and said, "You may go."

Lana nodded and was about to walk past when the guard suddenly called out,

"Wait!" She paused, turning back. He approached her with a notebook in his hand and an ingratiating smile on his face, and said,

"My daughter wants to study at Shadowridge University someday. I would be grateful if you could sign this. It might motivate her to believe she can achieve her dreams."

Lana stopped and narrowed her eyes slightly. "Who is your daughter? What’s her name?" she asked.

She was suddenly reminded of an incident from her past life, but for some reason, she couldn’t remember it at all, and hence, she asked for details from the guards unconsciously.

The guard immediately replied, "Her name is Megan. She has been preparing for the entrance exam for the past ten years."

The moment Lana heard that, she stared at the faint lingering black aura around him and suddenly froze.

The next second, a vision flashed before her eyes. In it, she saw the guard entering the elevator.

A suffocating force wrapped around him; he clutched at his throat, choking himself until he collapsed and died. After his death, his daughter, already struggling financially, was forced to beg just to afford her university fees.

For the next few minutes, Lana saw the vision, and her heart tightened.

The vision ended, and Lana found herself staring at the guard’s hopeful gaze.

For a moment, she remained still. Then she asked softly, "Are you working as a guard because you’re trying to help your daughter collect her college funds?"

The guard was stunned, then slowly nodded.

Others often assumed he took the job because he needed the money, but in reality, he was a retired soldier.

Although he received pension payments at regular intervals, it wasn’t enough to help his daughter get into Shadowridge University.

Even with a full scholarship, the books and tuition fees were too much.

People often looked down on him, assuming this was his profession, but this beautiful woman in front of him instantly saw through his hidden struggle.

His heart filled with admiration. ’Graduates of Shadowridge University truly are smart... powerful even... If only his daughter could also enter such a place someday...’

With those thoughts growing inside him, he hesitantly asked, "Do you have any advice for me?"

Lana paused, then shook her head. Instead of signing the notebook, she took out a small slip of paper and wrote a number on it. She handed it to him.

The guard blinked in confusion and asked, "This... isn’t a signature?"

Lana replied softly, "If you call this number and explain your daughter’s grades, along with your situation, you’ll be able to receive funds for her university fees."

The guard’s eyes widened. Lana continued, "The amount can go as high as ten million dollars. You should try it."

The guard looked from Lana to the number and back again. Tears gathered in his eyes. He tried to hold them back, but it was futile. ’After all these years... someone is finally helping me...’

He had served his country for nearly thirty years, fought ghosts and twisted entities with his bare hands, and even survived multiple possessions where he had begged to be killed... yet no one had ever pitied him.

He never wanted pity. All he ever wanted was to support his family and live with dignity.

But even after everything, his daughter had been forced to work part-time just to save for her education.

She was a national top-ranker, aspiring to become one of the greatest weapon designers in the industry. And yet he had no idea how to help her, because his pension barely supported their basic needs.

When he lost his hand and retired, he hoped to get a good government job, but corruption pushed him into working as a guard. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

He had approached countless organizations for help, only to find that they all demanded something in return... his daughter’s freedom.

’Fifty percent of her future salary... binding contracts... years of service... They all wanted to buy her dreams.’

He understood too well that freedom was the most expensive thing in the world, and companies purchased it easily from those without money.

So he took up this guard duty, determined to support his daughter in whatever way he could, even if others mocked him.

Now, looking at the number Lana had given him, he just hoped that if he called, the person on the other end wouldn’t demand such conditions.

Yet his heart was filled with gratitude when he thought about how Lana had gone as far as handing out the number even without him asking for help.

Maybe she had some powers, or maybe she could see his helplessness; anyhow, it was heart-touching, and he had nothing but well wishes for Lana.

’But why me? Does she knows about my daughter’s talent?’
