Garbage Warrior System-Chapter 16 – Shadow’s Hand Revealed
Chapter 16 – Shadow’s Hand Revealed
The atmosphere over the slums had shifted. It was no longer just heavy with smoke and dust; it thrummed, vibrating with a heartbeat that did not belong in this world. The tear above the cityscape pulsed like a terrible heart, sending ripples of distortion which warped metal and warped light. Each breath had the taste of iron and ozone.
Rai stood amidst the rubble of a destroyed highway overpass, his coat flying in the wind while the node-charged scythe strapped to his back pulsed with a thin violet halo. The survivors in the streets below were starting to construct barricades from crashed cars, shattered doors, and salvaged metal. Children wailed. Engines sputtered. A generator coughed sparks somewhere in the distance.
He hadn’t slept in thirty-six hours. He couldn’t.
Yuki rested within a fortified shelter under the bridge, covered in a field of containment energy that he created through his system interface. Her breathing was light and at times her lips moved as if she was whispering to someone out of sight.
Each time the rift surged, her body jerked.
Rai balled his fists. "You won’t have her," he growled, eyes darting toward the sky.
The system interface burst into life before him, casting ghost-white glyphs upon the air:
> [System Update : Rift Node Integration Unlocked]
[New Blueprint Available – Hybrid Absorber-Node Cannon (Lv. 2 Prototype)]
[Quest : Contain the Manifestation – Time Remaining : 12 Hours 57 Minutes]
He let out a sigh, shoulders clenched. "Twelve hours, eh? See if your patience holds, shadow."
The wind changed, bearing the low murmur which wasn’t wind at all.
You still talk to me as if I am somewhere else... but I am already within your air."
Rai stiffened. The noise was all around—behind, above, within. Then the shadows of the overpass stretched unnaturally long, reaching like tendrils. From the tendrils protruded figures—humanoid but skeletal, red eyes glowing, jaws clicking in rapid rhythm.
"Tkk-tkk-tkk-tkk-tkk."
They moved across the concrete like spiders.
Rai drew the scythe with a sharp metallic “SSSHHHINGGG!” Sparks flared as the blade scraped against the ground. “Alright then,” he whispered. “Let’s see how much of your hand you’ve shown.”
The first shadow creature lunged.
“THUNDDDD!” The scythe cleaved through it cleanly, scattering it into black dust. The second pounced from above, claws flashing. Rai spun, slicing upward in a perfect arc. “SHRRRACKKK!” Another burst of ash.
But for each one he felled, three others tore themselves loose from the concrete. The bridge shook as the horde increased.
"KRKRKRKRKRKRK!"
He retreated back, calling forth the Absorber from his stock. The mechanical core spread in mid-air, its rings whirring, sucking in garbage and metal scraps from the rubble below.
"VRRRRR-THHHHRRRRRRRR!"
The device blasted to life, its jaws aglow with red heat, and emitted a wave of compressed slag. "BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!" Shots ripped through shadowy forms, shockwaves resonating beneath the bridge like cannon blasts.
Rai clenched his teeth. "Not enough range—need full integration."
He punched the side of the Absorber.
> [Manual Override – Hybrid Integration Active]
---
Energy crackled. Blue arcs streamed from the Absorber to the scythe, joining the two machines in shining cables of light. Rai lifted the weapon—now a grotesque union of steel and node energy, thrumming like a living thing.
The swarm descended.
"THUNNNN-THUNNNN-THUNNNN!" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
"SLLLLLAAAASSSHHH!"
"KRAAAAASSSHHHHH!"
Every movement was rhythm and chaos—steel clashing with claws, the hissing of shadow vapor, system energy pulsating with his heartbeat. The battlefield flashed purple and blue alternately.
He spun, dropped, and swept the weapon in a horizontal sweep. A compressed garbage particle beam infused with node light burst outward.
"BAAAAAAAMMMM!!!"
Half of the bridge collapsed. The recoil launched Rai back through a cascade of concrete and dust. He fell hard, rolling. His eyesight blured, and the HUD flashed a warning.
> [System Overheat – Stamina Drain – 45 %]
[Core Temperature Critical – Stabilize Immediately]
"Not yet," he snarled, pushing himself to his feet.
The sky grew darker. A colossal form rose from the center of the rift—a being of smoke and transparent bone, standing hundreds of meters tall. Its face was an empty mask of eyeless sockets.
"So... you are the one challenging inheritance."
The voice ripped through the air like thunder.
Rai’s breath was caught. The shape advanced, its step causing structures to shake. "THUUUUDDDDD!" Windows exploded. Cars went rolling. The world appeared to wince.
"Origin..." Rai breathed.
"The name is nothing to you yet. You play with the wreckage of our era, scavenger. With the girl, I shall take shape."
On cue, Yuki shrieked from the below shelter. Her containment field spasmed. Blue power seeped through tears in the field. Rai spun just in time to watch symbols sear themselves into her skin—ancient runes curling in spirals up her arms.
“No!” He sprinted, diving down the rubble slope toward her. The shadow’s hand reached after him, a wall of smoke stretching across the skyline.
“WHHHHHHOOOOOMMMM!”
Rai’s boots slammed against metal, the scythe dragging sparks as he ran. “TKTKTKTKTKTK!” The ground buckled under the shadow’s pressure. He leapt, crashed through the entrance of the shelter, and skidded beside Yuki’s trembling body.
Her eyes snapped open—entirely white. "Rai..." The name emerged shrouded in that same primordial timbre. "He’s calling... from beneath the rift... I can see his world."
He clung to her shoulders. "Fight it, Yuki! Stay here with me!"
She spasmed. "It hurts—he’s inside—"
Her hands struck out, catching his wrists. Blue fire exploded around them. The air turned cold. Frost crept across the floor.
> [Warning : External Entity Attempting System Sync]
[Start : Dual Resistance Protocol Y/N]
"Yes!" he growled.
The interface burst apart in a pattern of light, and energy poured into his body. The system resisted the intruding essence, sparks shooting from his skin. The two forces met unseen, shattering the air with "THHRRAAANNNNGGG!" waves.
"Futile," the shadow taunted, "your machine is founded upon what I abandoned centuries ago.
Rai bellowed, his jugular veins bulging. "Perhaps! But even garbage grows stronger when it won’t stay dead!"
He strove to imbue every last scrap of system strength into the shield. Blue striations blended around Yuki, fixing the symbols in position. The possession halted—briefly.
That was sufficient.
He brought the hybrid sword up, striking directly for the rift.
"VVRRRRR-THHHHHHHHHUUUUUMMMM!!!"
A stream of focused node energy blasted upwards, ripping a hole in the clouds. The backlash sent shrapnel flying in all directions. The tear flared, its boundaries jerking, shards of darkness shattering like charred paper.
The shadow let out a howl. "You dare attack me?"
"Descend and learn!" Rai yelled back.
The hand of darkness fell. Its fingers drove through the air, crashing into the wreckage like falling mountains. "KRAAAAAAAASSSSHHHHHH!!!" Whole blocks toppled. Walls of flame blazed out in waves.
Rai brought up a secondary Absorber, deflecting the implosion. Burning scraps and molten shreds churned into an energy whirlpool. He leaped into it, using the spin-out pull to push himself upward toward the falling shadow limb.
"THUNNNNNNNDDD!!!"
"SLAAAACKKKKKK!!!"
"SHHRRRAAAAASSSHHH!"
Each impact echoed like artillery. The air rippled with sound and light. Rai’s weapon connected with the smoky limb, slicing through layers of corrupted essence. The creature shrieked, pulling back as black mist poured from the wound.
Then came silence. For a terrifying second, even the wind stopped.
Off the rent in the shadow’s arm dripped something darker than darkness—oily, thick liquid that hissed when it fell onto the ground. Wherever it fell, the ground corroded, smoldering into holes.
Rai fell hard, rolling through wreckage, coughing up blood. His scythe was weak. The core of the Absorber gave out a warning chime.
> [Energy Reserve : 12 % – Critical]
Above, the massive shape quivered. The head of the shadow dropped until two gaping eyes hung directly above him.
"Imposing, human. You bear remnants of an ancient system. maybe the one who betrayed me deposited more than dust."
Rai blinked the sweat from his eyes. "What. do you mean. betrayed?"
"The first awakener. The one who trapped me. She had eyes like your sister’s.
The world leaned to one side. Yuki—tied to the first awakener? That would imply... their lineage wasn’t arbitrary. It was passed down.
The shadow’s roar of laughter washed over the skyline. "Now you understand why she has to come back to me. Through her, my seal will be broken, and this world will bow once more."
Rai’s heart pounded. "Not going to happen."
He forced a control node into the soil. The rest of the Absorbers dispersed across the ruins flared online, creating a network of glowing hoops around him. Banners of garbage and wreckage washed toward the core.
"VRRRRRR-WHHHHHHRRRRRR-KSHHHHHHH!"
"See if you enjoy my style of evolution," Rai ground out.
He pushed his hand upwards. The lattice at the same moment fired all together, coalescing into one vertical beam that struck the shadow’s chest. The whole district went white.
"BBBBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMM!!!!"
The blast obliterated all other sound.
When the light finally dissipated, half of the shadow’s body disappeared. The rift shook, contracting a little.
But at what price—Rai dropped to one knee, blood gushing from his nose. His HUD flickered and went dark.
The voice, weakened but still speaking. "You postpone inevitability... but the seal is broken nonetheless. Eventually the door will swing open wide, and you will plead to join the dark instead of dying under it."
The enormous shape retreated into the crack, leaving behind clouds of smoldering ash and a downpour of ash.
Rai leaned beside Yuki, wiping soot from her cheek. Her pulse was feeble b
ut constant.
He wore a tired smile. "Still here. That’s what counts."
Beneath them, the tear no longer seethed like a heart—it ticked like a countdown clock.
