Chapter 76: Apes of Wrath

Arnold drove them into the secret passage.

His actions, especially the noise, were enough to call forth abominations that hid deep inside the ice.

Now they came, looking for prey to feast on.

And what can be a better food than a sleeping bag of meat that couldn’t fight back?

Inspection showed their status.

[ Drymonkey Lv. 19 ]

[ Grade: Evolved Challenger ]

But the skill couldn’t display their numbers.

Noa had fought against a hundred goblins.

Not once but twice.

But that seemingly amazing feat was nothing compared to the numbers he was up against.

Still, his heart was calm.

Instead of panicking when he had been ready this entire time, Noa whispered instructions.

"Take the sleepyheads out of my way and hide. Don’t even think about helping me if you don’t want me to kill you before I start cutting down these monkeys."

His tone explained how urgent the situation actually was.

But the back he showed had a hint of relaxed attitude.

"You are no exception."

Noa glared at Arthur and dashed to meet the monster.

He warned them, giving his group a chance to survive and save others.

What they would do with this opening didn’t concern him.

All he wanted to do was create a bloody mess.

And he would start with Arnold and his stupid clones.

"Y-you!" the man was still shouting. "You didn’t drink them, right? How did you know? It’s impossible for you to see through them."

He was struggling to believe what he was seeing, but Noa cared about none of that.

Perhaps he was too pumped up and didn’t care about the conversation.

Before the monkeys crossed the tens of metres to reach him, Noa was faster to strike at Arnold’s doppelgangers.

The man was helpless against him, his clones succumbing to Noa’s wrath.

Nevertheless, he tried to block or stop Noa from attacking.

Nothing worked.

Nor could he escape or kill Noa with his meager strength.

Still, the kills Noa collected were lifeless bodies and didn’t really affect Arnold on Velrox.

At least he cut the man’s connection and sent his consciousness back to where it belonged.

But it was temporary, as the man would soon be dealt with anyway.

’Now, the real fun begins.’

His sword was hungry for real blood.

So he acted upon his desire and moved like a lightning bolt. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Noa was constantly tearing the veils between life and death, adding a considerable amount of EXP points to his level.

Drowning himself in a bloody mist, Noa slashed and dodged.

The monkeys were fast, and their ice property was used to dull opponents’ movements.

Even Noa couldn’t escape its effects, freezing his fingers.

Though he lost the feeling of the grip in his hands, he didn’t stop but instead pushed harder and deeper into the monkey army.

As others were evacuating the sleeping classmates, Noa was an unbreakable wall, protecting them.

Yet, it came with a price.

The monkeys were ferocious beasts.

And managing hundreds of them at the same time added wounds to Noa’s body.

The steel in his hands was drawn to his blood like a moth to a flame.

Its pitiful attributes increased, albeit only slightly, but it was enough to make the blade sharper and give it the edge Noa needed in this fight.

’It hurts,’ he thought. "But I am used to this pain."

No amount of injuries could affect his mind—only the vessel of it was his weakness.

Still, Noa didn’t fall.

Not yet.

There was a visible grin dancing around his face—each corpse he made became a part of his collection.

He exploded corpses around him, setting the scene ablaze.

It struggled to melt the frozen monkeys and their flesh, but it was just enough to weaken them.

Fire versus ice—the ultimate showdown continued as the corpses covered the land.

There was no attribute increase, but the sound of the system made his battle more enjoyable.

Another sound helped his cause as well.

Each time his blade cut flesh and bones, the screams that escaped the monkeys were a music he would gladly dance to.

"Agh,"

He added strength to his numb muscles.

Fire was quick to extinguish at this dropping temperature.

His eyes didn’t have to search for the monsters to fight.

They did it for him, pouncing on him from every angle.

Only a handful of them managed to reach him, but it was enough to deal damage to his mortal body.

The slashing sound was followed by loud moans—the smell of blood and ice mixing.

Noa was forced to make a big leap as the ground cracked beneath his feet.

He jumped out of the way, evading the duo of monkeys as they lunged at him from behind.

Two strikes and the block later, he intercepted both of them, sending pulsing waves of pain through his arms.

Then he counterattacked.

His sword pierced the throat of the first beast and opened the second’s stomach.

Each breath made his lungs burn.

It felt like there was a hazard in his throat, and the burning corpses didn’t help.

Noa was assaulted again and again.

Now he was forced to duck sideways, but it brought him only a moment until another wave jumped at him.

[ You died ]

He finally lost his first life, dropping his level 13 back to 2.

The surging pain disappeared in the nothingness.

There was no coldness inside.

At least his sword was happily devouring every drop of his blood.

Noa couldn’t just waste time.

[ Echo: 775/1,000 ]

He didn’t lose more than one echo.

And after bringing his mind back to the ground, he wanted to spice things up.

Swiftly taking the blade from the ground, Noa backstabbed the closest monkey.

Then, instead of continuing his just-starting killing spree, he smirked and activated Corpses Puppet.

The skill pulled his mind, shifting it inside the monster’s corpse, and transforming his vision.
