Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Protecting Amie ( A Love Interest)

No sooner was the word out of Victor's mouth than chaos erupted in the room: the remaining guards attacked Jonny with weapons drawn, but he was quicker-much quicker.

First, the baton swung towards his head; he ducked without effort, with reflexes more acute than would be possible by human capabilities. In swift counter, his hands found their mark-the wrist-twisting with brutal force as he sent his attacker into the path of the next. By the time this second guard knew what had hit him, Jonny spun right and buried his foot into his chest with an acrobatic kick that landed him flat into the steel wall.

A third guard drove the knife towards his ribs. Jonny danced out of the way with liquid ease, caught the man's wrist in mid-air, yanked the blade from the guard's hand with a powerful grip, and plunged it into his thigh. The man screamed as he fell to his knees.

Gunfire erupted in the room.

His instincts yelled at Jonny to move. His body acted before his brain did-the twisting, the roll across the floor, and the bullets ripped through the air where he had stood a second ago. Adrenaline surged into his veins, sharpening his senses. Picking up a fallen pistol belonging to one of the guards, he returned shots of deadly precision.

Two of them went down instantly.

The rest were only a little slower, their faces wide with unbelieving eyes. They weren't trained for this. They'd roughed up helpless captives, not one who moved like a ghost and struck like the storm.

Jonny smirked. They really should have just left him alone.

Through the haze of combat, Jonny's gaze whipped toward Amie. She remained tied to her chair, working her way fruitlessly against bonds, her eyes wide with fear.

"Hold on, I'm coming!" Jonny called out as he sprinted toward her.

A guard stepped into his path, raising his gun. Jonny didn't hesitate—he kicked a nearby table into the man, knocking the weapon from his hands. Before the guard could recover, Jonny drove his elbow into his jaw, knocking him unconscious.

In an instant, he was by Amie's side. He didn't waste any time but immediately took a knife from a fallen guard and cut the ropes that bound her hands.

Amie gasped, rubbing her wrists. "What the hell is going on? How are you-?"

"No time to explain," Jonny said, interrupting as he pulled her to her feet. "We need to get out of here, now!"

Before they could move, the sound of slow, deliberate footsteps echoed across the room.

Jonny turned to see Victor step forward, a pistol in his hand.

"You're more troublesome than I expected," he said, his scarred face twisting into an amused smirk. "But let's see how well you do against this."

Without hesitation, he pulled the trigger.

Instinct took over for Jonny. His reflexes went into overdrive, time slowing down. He veered his body enough to the side that it wasn't a direct hit, but the bullet still grazed his shoulder, sending searing pain raking across it.

He stumbled but didn't fall.

Victor raised an eyebrow. "Impressive. But how many bullets can you dodge?"

Jonny clenched his fists. "Let's find out."

Victor flung his pistol away and cracked his knuckles. "I was hoping I'd get to handle you myself."

Jonny narrowed his eyes. "You're making a mistake."

"Am I?" Victor smirked. "Let's see who walks out of here alive."

Then he charged.

Victor moved with the efficiency of an executioner: quick, precise, his blows buffed. He threw a really strong punch in the direction of Jonny's face; Jonny deflected it with his forearm. Then he gave a knee strike but Victor dodged the strike, twisted, and delivered with extreme brutality an elbow to the ribs.

Pain flared through Jonny's side, but he didn't let it slow him down. He retaliated with a lightning-fast jab to Victor's jaw, making him stumble back.

Victor wiped his mouth, grinning. "Not bad."

He lunged again, aiming low this time. Jonny barely dodged in time as Victor attempted to sweep his legs. Jonny jumped, flipping backward to create distance.

"You've got skill," Jonny admitted. "But I've got something better."

Victor's smirk faltered. "And what's that?"

Jonny didn't answer him. Instead, he closed the distance in a blur of speed-a movement so fast that Victor barely had time to react. He landed a right hook into Victor's guts that folded him over. Before he could straighten up, Jonny grabbed him by the front of his collar and slammed him against the wall.

Victor gasped, his smirk finally gone.

Jonny raised his fist for the coup de grâce—and then Victor laughed.

"You really think this is over?"

Jonny scrunched up his face.

Victor reached into his pocket and hit a covered button on his watch. Instantly, the facility was filled with flashing red sirens.

"You just initiated a self-destruct sequence," Victor wheezed, smiling. "In two minutes, this whole complex is going to come down. Let's see how fast you can get out."

Jonny swore under his breath.

He dropped Victor and turned to Amie. "We're leaving—now!"

Jonny grabbed Amie's hand, and they sprinted toward the exit. Behind them, sparks rained down from the ceiling as the building began to shake violently. Smoke filled the air, and the walls cracked under the pressure of the impending explosion.

Jonny led Amie through the maze-like corridors, dodging falling debris and leaping over obstacles. Every second counted.

They burst through the last door just as fire exploded in a wave behind them. A huge shockwave catapulted them forward, and they rolled onto the dirt outside.

Neither said anything for quite a while. Both were hard of breath, their backs to the burning remains of the building; its crackling hot, the night sky orange from the flames.

Finally, Amie turned to Jonny, her face pale.

"Who- what are you?" she whispered.

Jonny was staring at wreckage, his head racing.

He had no answer.
